  1. Good Day. I am looking for a good affordable school in Bangkok where I can learn Thai and my friend can learn English. I speak " nitnoy" Thai and she speaks some english. Preferable private lessons for me and a classroom setting for her. Preferably daily classes. Thanks for any input. :o

  2. Hi all, I don't normally post on these forums, but with recent events in my life I feel compelled to.

My background is this: I am 25 and my ex is also 25. I was living in Bangkok with my ex thai gf for over one year. I headed back to the UK in march 2005 with the intention of my ex following me soon, so we sorted out a fiancee visa for her, which was by no mean easy or cheap, but I was in love so I was determined that she would follow me to the UK.

I sent her money for her flight and also helped pay for her flat whilst she was in Thailand and I was back in the UK. She came to the UK in early May and was supposed to stay with me for about 6 months before we had the intention of getting married. Unfortunately she only stayed for a week, as she was complaining she was homesick, didn't like food etc.

I tried to persuade her to stay but her mind was made up, so I took her back to Heathrow and left her there without checking that she checked in for her flight.

I then assumued that she went back to Thailand where she was supposed to be looking for a job. However I discovered via a friend of her's last night, that she is now staying with another guy that she met in Ko San Rd last January, when we were going through a rocky patch. This guy lives in Leicester and I called them up after her friend gave me his number. I have never been so shocked, upset, gutted in all my life. This simply is not right, she is staying in the UK on a fiancee visa with my name written on it, surely there is something I can do to get her out of the country?? Any sensible offers of advice would be much appreciated.

Keep the faith buddy. There are some good girls out there. Women can be decietful bitches any where in the world! Having worked in a bank 25 years in SOuth FLorida I have seen it all. Regarding Thai chicks. don't give up but like all women keep in mind they look at the size of a man's WALLET! It is more difficult when they are 25 years younger then you and so ###### cute!!!!!!!!!!! :o

  3. lopburi3...if the winters are like Miami winters, then they're not bad. I grew up in Broward County just north of Miami and most winters were not so bad. Usually by noon it was back to shorts and tee shirts. We did have some very cold days though bit it seemed that we had very mild weather every other year.

Where in Broward County? I live in Hollywood but I am moving to Thailand in a month.

  4. The North is cheaper and I think in many instinces more authentic Thai. It is also cooler. The South with the beaches and islands are also very nice. I come from a beach area( Florida) and really don't know if I could live anywhere that wasn't near the beach. Also on the whole the South also has more Falang stuff to do. I have been to Thailand many times and I am in the process of deciding the same thing. North, South or maybe even Bangkok!!!!!!!!! Good luck!

  5. For the last 8 months I have been sending a girl from Issan 15,000 Baht per month.   I see her when I come over, have met the family, etc.   We get along quite well.   She works in a saloon in Kalisin and appears to be fairly leveled headed.   15,000 baht per month did not phase me when I was working in the states but in June I am moving to Thailand and will be on a fixed income.   ( I am not necesarily retiring but sold some properties and decided to enjoy life while I am still young, 47 years old).   Question is should I cut her off when I move to Thailand as I will be supporting her, or at least cut the monthly allowance down?  If I cut it down, by how much then?    I don't want to be bothered for money all the time so I am inclined to reduce the amount to 10,000 Baht per month.   What are your thoughts?   Thanks.

Man I don't wanna get you pssed off but you are not obliged to give her a dime! Monthly allowance, jeezz Its estimated that less than 20% of bar girls who recieve 'allowances' stick to their word to not return to their 'former calling'.

many return to the bar to earn more cash and get more guys to send them money! I am taking the assumption that your girl is or was from the bar scene??? If she is not then I apologuise but if she is I wouldn't send a thing unless you have rock solid knowledge of her whereabouts!

It may seem a noble thing to be assisting her financially but be wary of them...

No appologises necessary. She is not a bar girl and I know what you are talking about. I told her when I move to Thailand next month the " allowance" as I call it would be drastically reduced as I will not be working and have the cash like I did in the States. She seemed to understand and hasn't brought it up. All in all the money she had got from me seems to have improved the quaility of life i.e. now gas vrs charcoal etc. and she still works long hours at a hair saloon. All I can say is we'll see what happens next month. If she doesn't like such is life!

  6. For those of you who are living in Thailand or who have visited for an extended period of time, did the Thai food and the Thai lifestyle add to your waistline or did you lose weight?

In Thailand I eat all I want and never put on a pound. Back in the States if I don't watch it I get easily put the pounds on. I think it is all the vegatable and fresh food vrs in the State half the stuff is deeped fried or frozen.

  7. I have been checking around various schools and find the price per class for Thai lessons varies. It appears the average is 300 Baht per hour. Does this appear in line? I have looked in Bangkok and Phuchet. I assume the farther North you go the cheaper? Any in put would be appreciated. Thanks.

  8. ajarn, but your home is not your home if you are a farang, your home is either fully thai owned or company owned, well unless your american and got it under that treaty thingy, as most farangs in thailand aint american they cant use the treaty thingy so they go the company or thai wifes name route, therefor under thai law it is not their home, its some thais home or a group of thais home with the minority belonging to a farang.

As an American I am interested in the " Treaty Thing". Any info. you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  9. Great stuff! She didn't find the garlic jar offensive but when I hit her with Tum Dern she went crazy!  :D

"Who teach you that? that not good in Thailand!"  Laugh? I nearly bought a round. :D

It's just that she was trying to fix my mate up with a mate of hers and I asked her to describe her.... "she's beautiful Andy, she's tall and thin"

and if she's tall and thin... you are?

she thought for a minute and reluctantly said "err, short and fat"

    Anyway, we're still speaking!

    thanks again.

You have a great sense of humour!!!!!!!!!!!!! and Balls!!!!! :o

  11. Eye test........as above free. My glasses are sun darkening Varifocals. With Longines frames I paid around ฿20,000. Only slightly cheaper than UK. Normal glasses, frames and eye test thrown in around ฿3,000.............reading glasses about ฿200. Basically it's the same as anywhere. You get what you pay for. For just a run-of-the-mill pair of prescription glasses it's a lot,lot cheaper. Top of the range, about the same as Europe.

Much more expensive in the States. I just got glasses, no glar, none scratch for $250 Dollars( with out the exam). I should of waited untill I got to Thailand!

  12. The point of this tread is to get an honest feedback from people who have had real expirience with Thai girls...ie. not short time for money style relationships.....

To make it short and sweet...

Thai girls are like Tigers in reality..... :D

(boy on boy realtion expirience is also welcome...since it goes to the same general theme..)

My experience has been basically the same as the majority of the repsondents. Quite in public but on " occasions" quite opionated with a temper!!! :o

  13. I gather that when marrying a TG a farang can list his assets on the back of the marriage document and keep them should the marriage fail.

Thereafter, all acquisitions, salaries etc.. made during the marriage period are owned jointly and belong to both parties.

I hear it is possible to set up a company and purchase land/property/assets in the company's name in order to protect them.

Are there any restrictions on setting up a company merely for this purpose? Obviously some stealth may be required, but I'd imagine the company would need to actually trade something or provide some service? Then there would be the matter of finding the requisite Thai partners....

Is this the best way, or are there any better or easier solutions?

Keep the assets out of the country and keep them to yourself.  It's much safer.  All I have heard is anything you have in Thailand stays with the woman in a divorce.  After all it is her country and she is probably not as well of as you.  As a former banker that has seen many people loose everything, it is better safe then sorry.  You never know in life, especially in LOVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :o

    Thanks in advance....

  14. I'm sure that the majority of TV members have noticed how Thais have 'waiting' refined into an art form.

We recently went to the licence office to renew the car road tax. It was very busy and the FG explained that we'd have to sit and wait. "How long?", I asked. "Oh, I'm not sure, maybe two hours", she said. Now we all know that 'two hours' in Thailand could mean anything from one hour to two days but she was prepared to sit and wait. I asked, "Why don't we pick the tax disc up tomorrow?". "No, we can't do that", she said, "We'll end up at the back of the queue".

Anyway, I got my way. We sat and waited in the pub and picked up the tax disc, no problem, the next day.

I agree, it is dificult at times to deal with, but as they say ' when in Rome, do as the Romans do!!!

    :o

More of an Asian thing than a Thai thing....IMHO I think they just have an immeasurable amount of patience for things they cant change. we see waiting as a waste of time...they see it as a means to an end.

It used to amaze me that we would rush to pack bags and get transport to the Bus stop only to wait for an hour for the bus.....then at the bus station it was hurry hurry hurry to wait an hour for the next bus. Reeow reeow, deeow deeow :D:D

    Interesting thoughts about waiting.

I just think of it as one of the several non-cash "taxes" of living in Thailand. "Taxes" like BKK traffic, double pricing, people pushing in while one is try to exit, etc.) They just do things differently here.

But, all in all, still a pretty good place to live... :D

  15. Hi Marko56, I have been in Bangkok off and on for about 15 months.  I can speak basic Thai and (until 10 days ago), only read and write a very little Thai.

I decided, like you, that I really wanted to learn to read and write Thai, so I have started going to private lessons. I am going to the Peeraya school on Silom Road (mentioned in a post above).

Well, I've been attending so far for 8 two-hour intensive sessions and I can now read Thai correctly. (I mean read virtually ALL thai, all classes of letter and vowel and tones and finals etc).  That's a good achievement in such a short time.  Of course, it's down to how much you want to succeed and how good your ability is to learn the language.

But I'm happy to recommend Peeraya!

Could you tell me what the rate is?  Thanks!

  16. Over the years I have picked up a little Thai. In June I am moving to the " Land of Smiles" full time and I really want to learn the language fluently. Is the extra money worth the cost of private lessons? Also, how many hours per day? I attended a few lessons over the years at a small school off the Sukimvit arround Soi Cowboy. I forgot the name. They seemed good But I only went a few times. Is anyone familiar with the shcool? Thanks!!!!!!!!

  17. Just a few thoughts that hopefuly arent too much of a ramble.

Maybe worth thinking from the parents side.

The Parents  worked hard to put her thru uni??

    How old are they?

Are there other useful brothers or sisters to help look after them?

Thai parents invest in their kids so they can take over the business if wealthy or look after them in old age.

Whipping the daughter off to OZ may be upsetting to them.

Get AE over to aust for three mths and dont marry her!

See if she can genuinely cope with living here.

If you are in Sydney need help with meeting some thai gals for her to som tam with here let me know.

My lady knows heaps ,and has one sister here and has had one other sister visit recently....she didnt like it ,they love it and would never go back to thailand.

Talk thru with AE these family expectations, dowry sure ,but dont forget you will be seen as wealthy falang ,make sure you set expectations up front regarding ongoing money back home, the requests WILL come.

Spend the three mths ,let her go home, and think about things, you need to cool off and think about things too.

Sure lovely to look at,great sex,but do you have a real connection?

What will she do if she comes back to stay?

DO you  ,Does she want kids?

The more work you put in up front the easier it will be..

    Finally the visa.

    Keep records of everything now

    Phone calls

    Emails

    Photos

You will need to show about 6 mths or more to make the ghouls at oz embassy happy.

Thanks for the reply mate ... is good. Her parents are in their late 40's. Both are school teachers. Her mother told me that they will each get 250,000bt if they retire when they are 50. More if they work longer. They own several parcels of land, each costing around 200,000bt. No doubt, they are paying the bank for these. They have a small farm where they grow rice. They have about 6 cows and are building up stock ... 4 had calfs this year. I think they are pretty well looked after financially. They have 3 other daughters ... the youngest would also like to live in Oz ... and gives me no end of cheek when I'm there.

I am worried about her meeting other Thais here in Oz ... there has been some bad press regarding Thai girls working in the wrong industry .... I used to share an office suite with an Immigration Lawyer who specialises in asian immigration. He was forever trying to get passports back for "unlucky" Thai girls who wanted to return home ... but that's another story.

I was planning to take her to the Temple in Annandale. And to the Thai new year festival at Darling Harbour ... hopefully she will meet some good people there.

Snoophound ... the sex is a small part of the equation and didn't feature in my first trip to Thailand. We have the same wicked sense of humour and love for dancing. We like the same movies and same music. There is no point in her bringing any of her CD's ... I've got most of them ... and they ain't cheap pirates either ... haha ...

Ae will have a degree in Business English ... she will have 3 months work experience in hotel management too. She wants to work in the travel / hospitality industry.

Her 3 months here will include 2 months at a full time english school in Ultimo. It will be just like going to work ... hopefully ... we will be having a normal life ... well, as normal as we can, apart from the Easter and Anzac long weekends.

    Thanks for your advice.

    Virg'

I agree with the posts that suggest spending a fair amount of time with her before taking the big step to marriage. Not to sound cyncial, but if you marry her in your home country how are the divorce laws? Do they have preneptual agreements there? Also, I beleive in a Thai divorce the Farang usually looses all assets in Thailand to his spouse. I don't mean to sound pessamistic, but I work in a bank( untill I move to Thailand full time in June) and have seen to many people loose so much that they worked so hard for. Sounds like you have a good plan though and have covered many of the bases. Hope all works out for you and Good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!

  18. Thanks to all who appreciated my comments.

Now having said all that, any of you guys who want to ask for my hand in marriage know what to do.. less than 8 digits is unacceptable. (Just for show, of course.. It will be returned after the wedding.. :o)

Excellent!!!!!! Very well written and balanced post.

  19. Almost a year ago, I gave this establishment a bloody good write up on a few websites and was proud to take friends here for meals as I liked the food and thought the service was ok.

Today I went there with the intention of having late lunch and as they were obviously open, took my seat in full view of the staff.

Nobody came over to take a drink order, or to ask about my food order. I am a well known face here and always order swiftly and without fuss.

Tables of tourists were being fussed over and the one look I got from a waitress was a scowl. So I slammed my menu down and ate at the Black Swan round the corner instead.

    Maybe this is the problem:

I am a well known face here
I am competing against tourists who would leave a minimum of 100 Baht tips.

Anyone else decided to boycott this or any other place for the same reason?

I have been going there for a few years now and never had bad service. I have had O.K. service but never enough to anoy me. Usually I go there a few times in a two to three week period and then am out of the country for a few months. The food( especially the cashew Gai Chili) is always good!!

  20. That's coverage for myself, my wife, and our eight year old son. Limits are as follows|: out patient coverage- 1000 baht per day per person, not to exceed 30 days. In patient 3000 baht per day. Major medical covers surgeries, and and major diseases. Excludes HIV. This is coverage with Bupa Blue Cross. I chose the next to the hiest coverage available. They also include evacuation to your home country one million baht, and funeral expenses. This is my second year with them. I will evaluate after this year, and possibly drop the outpatient coverage.

    Thanks for the info..

  21. I know the cost of health care in Thailand is dirt cheap compared to the States.   Needless to say  I will self insure but is there good coverage available that would pick up the tab for anything over say  750,000 baht?   Kind of like a large deductable before the insurer kicks in.   Thanks!

Although health care is cheap, good insurance is very expensive. I think I pay about ฿70,000 a year for full coverage.

Is that for one person? What is the limit of your coverage? Are Blue Cross and Blue Sheild any good in Thailand? Do you know if they have catastrophic type coverage where it only kicks in for major stuff? Thanks

Thanks.

Hi David, I can't find a ref to the word "girlfriend" in your posts.

This girl has a good job, why are you sending her 15KB a month?

15KB/month, is a lot of baht in Isaan..... :o

    Just curious.

    Hey Udon,

Yes she is my girlfriend. I wouldn't consider her job a " good job" even by Thai standards but at least she has one. As far as where I got the figure 15,000 Baht, I based it somewhat on how it would effect my budget while I was working in the States, which was nill. I know the money I sent her has effected the quality of her families life i.e. now they have a motor bike, gas instead of charcoal to cook with, sister in University, etc.. I would rather give the money to some one who I beleive can use it and appreciate it vrs some @#$ Bimbo on South Beach in Miami via a dinner, etc.. WHile I believe she truly has feelings for me and us using the money productively, nothing is a ' sure" thing, especailly with women. We'll see how it goes when I arrive in June. I have considered all the input from the members and will just have to " play it by ear"!!!Thanks for all the advice!!

  24. Nice going Leith. I am a humitarian aid worker and have been working in Afghanistan the last couple of years. R & R for 2 weeks every 8 weeks so my wife contracted out and supervised construction of our place, herself. I was not here to help her other than on the design of the place.

She's a pretty smart chick-asked for a complete price with labour component separate then let the contract for labour only. She purchased everything at our local building supply warehouse and had it delivered as work progressed.

So we have a very beautiful new house-3 bedrooms-main with ensuite bathroom, huge living area, kitchen, laundry, second bathroom, storeroom and verandah on 3 sides which includes carport. Tiled throughout.

Complete price including built in furniture, curtains, beds, bedding, cooking stuff, electrical goods, sat TV and sat internet, water bore and pump, driveway and fences all round for less than Bt1,000,000.

Excellent tradesmen and only 4 months to build. The labour only build idea is a great incentive for them to move as they only had  2 payments-1/3 to start and the rest at completion. This was my wife's idea and it certainly worked.

We live in Lam Plai Mat in Buri Ram.

Hope this info may be of assistance to someone,

Excellent price and time frame for completion!

    Cheers,

    Bicko

  25. Another question. Saloon or salon?

    I repeat my question.

Salon. She washes hair in a Thai type beauty shop.

Ok. Just checking as you did say saloon. But i kinda thought it was a typo. Salon workers dont make heaps of money. Unless she owns the business. Then it can be a good income. Not heaps but above average if the location is right. IMO.

You are right. she make little income, even for a Thai.
