  1. I like the idea of opening up completely internally like Vietnam did, as there is no community transmission whats the point of all the confusing little rules towards each type of business and what people are allowed or required to do? It's pretty close now with even some nightclubs open, but ridiculous when some bars ban dancing, and some restaurants still won't let you sit more than 5 people on the same table.

They should just focus their effort making sure nobody brings it back in, mass tourism should not be the first priority, but everyone with work or family in Thailand should be allowed to return with a reasonable 10-14day quarantine and testing package, without all the bureaucracy, hassle and uncertainty. They could also just allow people who are already here to stay, as it seems like a terrible idea to force people out who can afford to be here and spend money.

  2. My girlfriend is vietnamese and we are staying in Chiang Mai. We assumed we could extend her visa exemption stamp for another 30 days, but just found out this is not the case.

She needs to leave the country in a couple days, and we are trying to find the easiest (+cheaper) option to get another 30 days asap. Somebody recommended to try the Huay Xai laos border for a in-out border run, as she should get a 30 days asean exemption stamp for free in both countries. I would just like to ask here if anyone knows if this could be a problem, and what she might need to bring with her?. f.ex 20k baht in cash? would it be better if i go with her or is it pretty straightforward for her to do it alone?

  3. I think i got the answer:
"If you plan to travel to Vietnam for more than 15 days, you will need to apply for visa before traveling. The 15 days visa exemption starts on arrival date (day 1) when you pass through immigration. You need to exit Viet Nam (going through immigration) on the 15th day from the arrival date (day 1)."

So by landing on the 10th i need to have a return ticket on the 24th or before.

  4. Hey, i am a norwegian citizen and will land in HaNoi Vietnam on july 10th, (from bkk) I plan to just get a return ticket and visit on visa exemption, but wondering exactly which is the last day i can return on.

When i land on the 10th, can i have a return ticket on the 25th or 24th? or does it have to be on the 23th?

  5. I think everybody should have the right to recline their seat, but there is one advantage with such a device. I was once sitting with my laptop open and the person in front suddenly reclined hard right on the screen, and i think it was really close to breaking. You should be able to use such a device to save your laptop, but you would have to remove it if anyone asks. Everybody should just recline carefully, if you feel anything stopping you, turn around and ask. And if the person behind you can't adjust their seat (exit, or back-row), then don't recline all the way down.

  6. I applied for a triple entry today. I would just like to add that to apply for a triple entry tourist visa you also need to show 3 "plane tickets" going into Thailand.

You don't need to actually buy the tickets, just make a search, click one, and then print out the page where it shows you exact times and flight numbers.

F.ex search for a 2 weeks round-trip to hong kong, leaving on the 59th day after your first arrival. Just print the page, then search for another ticket to a different country on the 59th day after that second arrival and print that. You don't need to actually reserve and pay for the tickets, they just need to know that you have tourist plans and understand the visa limitations (60 days on each entry). When you actually arrive in Thailand you do the 60days + 30 day extensions for a total of up to 270 days, however i would get the visa at least 2 weeks in advance to be safe. They said i could pick it up after 1 week, and on the embassy website they say you should apply 1 month in advance.

So you would get perhaps 250 days or so, which doesn't sound bad at all!

I would be very worried if i had to give away my passport for a week with less than 2 weeks until departure.

I applied one month in advance, and in addition i gave them my train confirmation going to chiang mai and a "plane ticket" (search+print) going back home in march.

Hopefully it will be no problems for either of us, and if you'd like, i would be happy to meet up and grab a beer when were both in Chiang Mai =)

  7. Pre-new to Chiang Mai here, looking forward to seeing some of you when i arrive in September!

If your interests include enjoying a few beers and talking about random things, i am up for that.

  8. Yes, i will definitely spend a day or more at punspace, and other co-working places, looking forward to it!

Airbnb is usually more expensive on long stays, but probably a good idea to make a reservation there in the beginning, and try to get a better deal later.

I will get a tourist visa in advance, and take 2 trips to other countries during my 6 months. I will happen to be earning some money online, but not working for any organization and also visiting for tourism purposes, so it should be all good. I believe i don't need any further tickets when i arrive on a valid tourist visa, (triple entry, not 30day exemption) but please correct me if i am wrong on this.

  9. I wanted to come for 2+ months from February, however it ended up just being a package tour and just got one week in Chiang Mai during Songkran. But now in September it's time, and i have booked a one-way flight!

In february i made this post:

    http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/702144-when-should-i-come/

I mentioned earning at least 300$ a month online, but i am happy to say it's now in the range of 1000-2000$.

And with additional savings, i am now certain i will not end up homeless on the streets of Thailand.

I'll listen to the advice of Anonymouse on the last post. I am doing my best to do everything transparent and completely legal, but it just doesn't seem to be any practical solution. I will just have to pay tax in my home country and travel as a tourist or student.

    I also made this post:

    http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/737533-tourist-visa-how-can-3-entries-within-90-days-become-270days/

It somehow changed track to be about retirement visa, but i am 27 so i won't be able to get that.

I will simply get a triple entry visa, and if i decide to stay longer or skip border-runs, i'll probably go for the language-school ED-visa option.

    Most minor-nuisances should be sorted.

Now i have been looking everywhere at good apartment offers, and seen a lot of great things, but i am not sure if i should try to get something in advance or just have a look in person when i am there. I am also not completely sure what i am looking for or my budget, but i am thinking my total monthly budget could be less than 50.000baht. And it should be possible to find a decent apartment around 15k a month, so i'll at least spend less than 20.000 on everything apartment related, and have about 1.000 a day to enjoy life wink.png

My hardest requirement is internet access, i am hoping to get at least 5mbit by cable directly to my apartment, not a shared/unstable wifi.

This is what is hard to figure out on house/condo listings, extremely few have internet directly mentioned in the offer. If the ad doesn't mention it and don't have a phone line, can i still expect to get decent internet access?

Also i can't stand bugs, i would wish to try an apartment for at least a night or two before signing a 3 or 6 month contract, to make sure there are definitely no bed-bugs, cockroaches, or anything else keeping me up at night. Would that be reasonable to ask?

I would also like to live central, perhaps in Nimman. Seems to be a vibrant community of people doing interesting work from coffee-shops etc, if you are one of them, send me a message! I am definitely looking for friends in the area. I am leaving friends and family for a long time, and i would very much appreciate a few PM's about socializing/hanging-out.

I am also considering trying to get at least a 1 bedroom just so i could invite couch-surfers. A studio is a bit intimate for that.

I noticed people getting private offers, and condo suggestions in other posts, i would love to get some too! i would like a kitchen that has at least fridge and cooking plates, some kind of veranda, and furnished with somewhere nice to sit and work for many hours a day, preferably facing out a window where i could notice people and something nature'ish.

  10. Hello! i am now finally preparing to make my jump into south-east asia, most likely to rent an apartment in the city of Chiang Mai.

I have done research on this forum and elsewhere, but i am still slightly puzzled by the multiple entry tourist visa, please confirm that i got this right:

    - I can apply for a multiple entries tourist visa with a one-way ticket, without booking any kind of return ticket, and this is alright with both my airline and thai authorities, even after august 12, as long as i got my visa in advance.

    - With 3 entries on a 60 day tourist visa, i can stay for up to 270 days by extending the visa after 30-60 days, doing a border run at 90 days, extending it again at 150 days etc..

My main concern is that on my embassy information page it says:

"Your visa is valid for 90 days. This means your entry/entries into Thailand must be within 90 days of the issue date of the visa, as written on your visa stamp.".

And that i should make visa arrangements a month in advance, but when i do, wouldn't the visa entries only be valid for less than the first 2 months of my stay?

Lets say i'll take a one week trip to Laos before my 90 days run out, when i return it would have been about 4 months since i first got my visa, is my second entry now still available?

On a side note, is it harder to get 3 entries than a double entry? would it also be practical to get as much as 4 or 5 entries?

  11. Thank you HooHaa, i can't imagine it would be breaking any law to spend money i earned, especially if i anyway have to start paying tax on it here in Norway.

I haven't booked yet, but very likely i'll take a flight late march, and stay in phuket or koh samui until going to chiang mai just before songkran.

Unfortunately i will probably have a return ticket on this trip (within 30 or 60day visa), but then i can do some local research and perhaps come to stay longer next time.

  12. Wow this thread built up nicely, i don't expect to live on 300$ (10k baht) a month, that's just what i would get passively right now. But i am working hard to increase it, and i have some money saved up, so there is no problem spending 30-50k baht a month for a few months and still get a return ticket if increasing my revenue fails. So my main question was when, and i believe i got my answer now, early april right before songkran, i'll be there!

  13. Thanks for the quick replies guys

uptheos: i have seen some of those.. it doesn't really look like i want to be in chiang mai in march, how about april? and is there any other place with a chiang-mai like vibe to it on a different schedule?

impulse: fair point, although i probably burn more cash staying home, and it might not be as much fun.

  14. I am very interested in coming to Chiang Mai. i have never been there but it's on top of my list.

i am 27 male, inspired by 4-hour-workweek and similar blogs to perhaps try a move, (about living low cost on internet endeavors, i am getting just over 300$ a month right now, but it will definitely increase, although i don't know by how much, and i got some money saved up so i will be fine either way) i might be trying it out for a month or so at first.

Chiang Mai is on the very top of the list for a couple reasons. It's cheap, the women are beautiful, they have squash courts (hope to find someone to play with), they have at least one place to play magic the gathering (i am a bit of a geek), the temperature is hot, but not too hot, and they also have language and cooking schools, gyms etc. And as far as i know you can get decent internet, this is crucial. I would also like to buy or rent if possible a desktop monitor if i am staying for a while, so i could work on more than 13" with my macbook.

One thing that puts me off is the possible air pollution hazard, i have been to Beijing once and i am never going back there again.

it's bad timing because i have a couple months to spare right now with no regular job, girlfriend leaving, negative temperatures etc.. i am wondering if i should jump on a flight at the end of the month, but how are the predictions on pollution? is there anywhere else you would recommend which is low-cost and comfortable with most of my requirements?
