  1. Heads up, guys. For those who live in the Suthep area. I have heard that the water and electricity will be turned off on Tue for the whole day in order to clean the canal. Hope it's not true, but be prepared.

  2. I am interested in learning more about the Chinese culture, history, etc. As a couch surfer (couchsurfing.org) I take in quite a few Chinese people. Curretly have a mother and son making dumplings for my dinner:-). I will hope that your forum will not be on a Mon or Wed eve when I teach, and will hope that you don't have competition with your stories from other attendees. Did you know there is a Travel Club in town and they might like to have you as a speaker?

  3. I recomment researching/googling "co-housing", an idea originally from Sweden. There are a number of very successful projects in the US and other countries. The "Commune" word has bad vibes for a lot of "traditionalists".

  4. Has anyone used any reliable painters for painting walls and ceilings inside a house.

fcgprg may I suggest DIY. No problems with contractors, self satisfaction, save allot of money and allot of excercise....just a thought

Yes - excellent company called NewLook IPD (Interior Paint & Design). Their work is superb. Mobile 0819 983 831

I also have had a great experience with NewLookIPD. A brilliant colorist and great applicator! With a sense of humour mixed in.

  5. It would cost me 800B to get my venetian blind fixed. I am convinced I could do it myself if I knew where to get the materials. Anybody have an idea as to where? Already checked with HomePro and at Worawot mkt. Tnx

  6. I've used P&P Travel agency on the Thapae Road, almost on the corner of Soi 4, for over 10 years and never had a problem. Always very efficient, quick and trustworthy.

Luckily, Chiang Mai *does* have a few trustworthy travel agencies, as you can see from this thread. :)

PM Travel just north of Chedi Luang and the stop lite there - 45,000B Riiiip.... I now use P&P at many people's recommendation

  7. Our prices actually have been reduced to 24,960 Baht for our regular 180 lesson Walen course from 27,900 Baht previously.

Correct me if i'm wrong someone, but 24,960 Baht for a 1 year course (assuming that's what it is or could be), is incredibly good value for money if the method actually works. Lets not also forget that just because a person goes to learn Thai and comes away with little more than a สวัสดีครับ s-wat-dee-khrap, doesn't always mean that the school or personal teacher failed him or her. It takes time, effort, and commitment from the student too, and until the Ministry of World Education brings out a course of language pills, it will always be that way. The old saying; A poor workman always blames his tools springs to mind! And no one should ever knock anything until they themselves have tried it - I assume that's a fair comment. Isn't it?

    Aitch

After 6 hours in class (and many hours of committed study outside the classroom) I am reading! I am one of those old students with poor memory and had a few dozen words that I use daily. I may never be good at understanding (everyone talks too fast for old brain processing) but at least I will be able to read - even if I don't know what it means.

It seems expensive because the commitment is at least 60 hours - seems like a lot to shell out at one time! I feel I am getting more quality than anywhere else or than any other method I have tried.

  8. Haven't tried restoring, but I looked all over for acid-free matting and paper for reframing some prints. Even the faculty of art at CMU had never heard of such a thing. Please post any success you find.

  9. I am about to embark on a full renovation of a large apartment in a condominium, with virtually everything there now, including most walls, to be torn out, and the whole place to be redone from scratch. I've never done this before, in Chiangmai or elsewhere, and am going to need lots of help.

I've searched the Forum and am confident I have found at least most of the existing threads and posts that have recommendations of interior contractors and constructors in Chiangmai.

I would like to have more recommendations, though, so if you have any that you have not already posted at some time in the last couple of years, could you please either post them here or send them to me in a PM?

I am especially interested in interior contractors --including others who go by a different title -- who are in the business of taking full responsibility for the design and implementation of projects like this, but I am interested too in construction contractors of different kinds who undertake only part of the work that will be needed, such as carpenters, electricians, plumbers and so on.

At least some English ability is a must, because my Thai is still so limited that I should not even suggest by using the phrase "my Thai" that I have any at all.

Many thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Try Nai Youngfellow, who speaks great English, of CMP (Chaingmai Properties) 089 7001368. Has a good crew of workers and has many resources to solve most problems.

  10. I have some window that are a good 20 feet up. Can't do it myself as I have no ladder that long and I am too wise/chicken (take your pick) to get up there to do it even if I had a ladder. I have paid to get them done but I believe waaay too much. 1,000B and it took the guy 1/2 hr. Anyone got any knowledge? ideas? Thanks.

  11. In life things strike a chord and then perhaps fade away.

a/ I wonder whether anyone has any updates on the confessed murderer of gary portensky here in chiang mai. Hows the australian

assailant doing. Is he out? is he going to bars that I should Know about. ( dont mention any kind of war with this fellow. Look it up on u tube.)

b/ leon killed in pai. hows the policeman that shot him. is he ok?

c/ the piano teacher here in chiang mai. any arrests ?

i just wonder how is every one doing.

It seems to me that there is a great outpouring of emotions and opinions on thai visa when these crimes happen. BUt soon forgotten.

Try investigateudom.com for some people who want justice

they dont seem to be giving up. Good for them..............

    anyway ........................................

Even though I still grieve for David, the piano man, the guilty party does not interest me. Personally I am not interested in revenge - that does not bring back the person who is sorely missed.

  12. My parents are visiting Chiang Mai at the end of the month and I hope to find them a guide to show them around for the week. They speak German and English, though a German guide would be ideal. I am quite sure they'll pay handsomely for this, so if anybody knows such a guide, or has ideas of how I could find one (e.g., would it make sense to go to the university and find a student who studies German?) please let me know. I think they are only planning on the routine stuff and won't need the greatest expert in the world to show them around.

    Thanks a bunch!

I have a very good, honest Thai girlfriend with a background in tourism, a great driver, and speaks English very well. She has taken many of my friends on small "tours" and they have been delighted with her. PM me!
