Im an Aussie expat, living in Thailand for 11 years now. I'm now approaching retirement age and am surprised to be told by the govt that to get the pension I paid for over many years, I have to be resident and present in Australia on the date I apply. They didn't tell me that =when I was handing over the tax and super...
Any approaches to this? I haven't lived there for 11 years, no friends there and no rellies. Sort of cramps my style a bit but it is what it is. Advice or info gratefully received...

Thanks for that, I'll take a look. It's either than or a brutish hackintosh, but I like the small footprint.

Any reason you don't want to buy new?
Yes, I don't like Mavericks and I don't like Yosemite. well, not at the moment anyway. Sticking to ML so I need hardware it will run on. Apple refused to tell me if the latest machines would run ML or not, and if they don't know, I'm not going to take a punt.

I have a friend who comes here 3 or 4 times a year. This time he wants to stay a couple of months rather than the 30-day standard tourist period. Can that be done? What would he have to do?
Also, I'm trying to get him to apply for a retirement visa? What would he have to do?
Thanks in advance for any information.

I need to transfer money to UK, probably a one-off. The banks in Thailand would quite like to skin me it seems. What is the best/cheapest/quickest/most reliable way to get it done? All help gratefully received.

I need to set up a company to sell Thai crafts to Brazil.
Anyone know a good lawyer to help me set it all up? If not a native speaker, needs to be an excellent english-speaker. It will be me and the misses running it from Bangkok. Not looking to be ripped off.
All ideas welcome.

Well, I must say that was really helpful, thanks to all of you, I learned a lot.
I decided to stay with the retirement visa because it was floe to expiry and I didn't really have more than a few days to gather all the right information plus interview etc… but I think I will likely change to marriage visa at the next 90-day report if I can do so for a 12-month visa. I know that it's a risk, what with Thai ladies and all, but I think on balance I am well covered.
Cheers again I really did find all the replies helped me out.

I'm tempted to convert my visa from extension of stay by reason of retirement to extension of stay by reason of marriage to a Thai national, I gather the process is a bit more involved than the retirement visa and that it may take a week or so - ??
The requirements are a bit foggy for me so I wonder of one of the visa experts here could advise as to the documents/processes required, and offer an opinion as to upside and downside of making the change.
All help gratefully received.

Thanks to all for your helpful comments. Looks like I'm a bit screwed, at least unless I can get inventive...
