  1. I think there is a lot more of the 'paid for' sex than there is outright prostitution, and as somebody here said, all sex is paid for.

In a large number of cases I suspect girls go with guys and have sex willingly. That the guy might incentivise them with cash is irrelevant. Though they might get mad if none is forthcoming and it might be a prime driver. I've known a good few who have accepted evenings out, dinner, movie, drinks, a little shopping, as an equivalent.

Thailand has had no new cases of Cv19 for 18 days. Doesn't that mean that Thailand only has Cv19 cases with people in hospital. So the bars should be Cv19 free. Why continue with Cv19 lockdown stupidity ? Somebody is making, or will make, a lot of money out of this. How much will it cost to buy a bankrupt bar ?

That needs some big assumptions and a lot of trust in government data. Do you really trust Thai government data?

No reported cases within the genpop, does not mean its not there. They are not testing and they are not reporting, what about those who get sick, never see a doctor and die at home, with a death certificate that states cause of death as "Heart stopped", what about asymptomatic spreaders?

Too many variables and too much faith required.

I think the government knows its weakness and is hell bent on not having it exposed.

  3. @ Orchidfan, I feel your pain! I also have to 'deal' with Pathum Thani immigration office and a I dread the days I have to go there. The 'reception girl', if the one I am thinking of is the prime cause of my frustration and the best advert I have ever met for not wanting anything to do with Thailand, ever. She is clearly a complete disaster and utterly atrocious in her attitude. You have to think that rule number one for anyone working in immigration should be a positive a friendly attitude with the necessary communication skills for dealing with foreigners.

By contrast I have found all the other people working at that office most helpful and friendly.

  4. Hi,

I'd like to ask a question here if I may, this might be a bit newbie but please humour me, just looking for some clarity.

    1. If I'm getting an income from UK and it is being paid into a local Thai bank account held in my name and it is above the threshold I can use that as my visa extension qualification?

    2. The threshold for these income receipts to my Thai bank account needs to amount to THB65,000 per month single or married?

    3. The transfer of income needs to have a demonstrated history of how long?

Hopefully these are fairly straightforward yes or no answers. I'll take a depends with clarification ????

    Cheers

    Bob

The rationale behind the requirement for you to pay tax in the UK on your pension income is that HMRC assume that whatever your residence status now or in the past, if you are receiving pension income from a UK entity it implies that it is in respect of your service either in the UK or to a UK company or similar entity.

This pretty much matches a conversation I had with HMRC in the early days of applying for my tax refund. They had questioned my employment by a UK company suggesting that income arising (important word) in the UK would be taxed in the UK. When it became clear that whilst I was employed by a UK company all of the work I did for that company, which generated my income , was performed outside the UK. They agreed that would not be taxed and I did indeed get a full refund of 5 years tax. I doubt this is a relevant matter but gives pause for thought. My total non-resident status whilst employed by a UK company accounts for exactly half of my pensionable service.

More than anything I am now very aware that I think I should check with the pensions advisory service at least and get more input.

Tax will be deducted in the UK, if it exceeds your personal allowance currently 12500 GBP (presuming that is still applicable to your situation), you would have to claim any tax back. If your were resident you would probably have the up to 25% tax free option  available don't know what happens in your situation??

Thanks, but confused. My last tax code shown on a pay slip when I worked for a UK company but was non-resident is NT (No tax) I paid no UK income tax in the last years I worked for said company as I was declared not a UK resident for tax purposes, the tax man actually repaid me 5 years of tax that I had been paying when I shouldn't have. My status has remained unchanged since then. Your comments suggest I might still pay tax above the personal allowance ceiling based on my current status as non-resident. Is that what you meant?

I think the last time I paid UK income tax the personal allowance was about 4500 GBP. How times change.

    Thanks for the thoughts. ????

  7. I've been here a while in different ways. Non immigrant B, work permit for a good few years, then non O-A based on marriage, then just odd times in and out on 30 day non visa entries. I'm a UK national and looking at retirement now so I have a few questions about how things are and what I can consider, or at least start to think about.

I have a UK final salary pension that pays more than the stipulated minimum monthly, yeah even at the sucky exchange rate today ???? I am aware that embassies no longer provide letters of so called 'evidence'. At least UK embassy does not I understand. What therefore are my options for having my pension accepted as a route to securing a retirement visa/extension of stay?

Pension can be paid anywhere and I am not particularly bothered if that needs to be Thailand, I have a bank account here.

I'm not interested in the 400/800 k in a bank deal. I want to use my pension and my understanding is that it is allowed, I would like to know what I need to do to go that route.

With regard to the UK final salary pension I have a couple of questions. My pension provider has given me figures which I presume are before UK tax, however I have been non-resident for tax purposes for more than 25 years and I presume that my pension will not attract tax either. Is that correct?

The pension provider suggests that this final salary pension will attract interest at certain rates on certain portions. Will that apply if I am considered not resident in UK?

My UK basic state pension is not due for another couple of years, I understand that will not be index linked.

I am talking to the pension provider about some of these things though obviously the visa stuff is not their bailiwick.

    Any thoughts much appreciated.

  8. Hi,

Well I'm sure this one has done the rounds but nothing immediately in the first page or so of scanning so hopefully not too much of a pain.

My mother is visiting from UK. Entered on a standard 30 day visa exempt entry. Now she has decided she would like to stay maybe another few weeks at least.

Question is I'm not sure today what with all the variability, changes etc how this can best be done. Is it best she just fly some where close and then back again to re-enter or can a visa exempt entry be extended some way in country, or is all of this a big no no these days?

Thanks for your patience and ideas.

  9. I need to do my first 90 day report this next week and am confused a little as to what I need to take. Online information suggests just my passport, and fill in the form there. Thailand awareness says take everything in triplicate (with extra copies) from birth certificate onward for both me and my wife.

A word to the wise would be helpful though. Can anyone list an authoritative list of documents to be presented in order to do this?

This is for Pathum Thani immigration.

    Thanks

    Maybe Visa Impossible ???

    But who could really know.

Others have said, you need to know what goes on in the Thai embassy in your country, there can be a lot of differences. Also the 60 vs 90 day thing. You can get a 60 day visa then a 30 day extension at an immigration office in country. I actually had a 30 day extension followed by a 60 day extension all off one visa exempt entry, but that was my immigration office in the province I stay in and with my wife as guarantor (I think).

I also had a situation applying for a Nigeria visa at their embassy in Bangkok. At first it was refused. Then I found out all the Thai staff there were on the take and would see it through for a 'gift'. I happened to corner the ambassador as he arrived in the compound and berated him for his less than professional staff. Got the visa then alright. Not that anyone in the right mind would necessarily really want such a thing ? Just saying, if the staff at that embassy, no matter their nationality, might be a part of your problem.

  11. I converted the maids quarters in to a workshop. Didn't like the maid outside anywhere so she has one of the spare bedrooms, easy to get at that way as well.

The room makes a great workshop and though I don't have aircon in that room it does have a nice big fan and rarely gets too hot.

I also have an office / mancave in the house for all the other stuff!

  12. Hi,

I'm sure this is a common enough question so hopefully I can get some quick answers. Apologies if it's all a bit repetitive.

I'm a UK national, UK passport holder, lived in Thailand pretty much the last 20 years, now 57 years old. Had a non-imm B and work permit years back but that was all handled by others. After that I was doing quite a bit of traveling and not spending so much time in Thailand so was able to make do with 30 day visa exempt entries. Now I'm home for an extended period. I entered on a 30 day visa exempt stamp and had it extended at my local, Pathum Thani, office, first for 30 days and then a further 60 days, so I suppose I got 120 days out of that.

Now I'm preparing to make a real visa, non-imm based on marriage. Been married here about 18 years, have two teenage kids. I'm not retired though I'm not working at the moment.

So what do I need? The Pathum Thani immigration office (PTIO) have advised I go to Vientianne and I'm not inclined to do other than they suggest unless for good reason. The biggest problem has been getting information on what I need to take with me and what the process will be, wife and myself have both pressed PTIO on this but their response has been nothing more than to say go do it there. So hopefully I can get some meaningful help here on the following.

    1. Documents I need to take. Originals/copies, qty of?

    2. Where to go and when?

    3. Where to stay?

    4. Er, anything else relevant.

    Thanks

    BN
