Be careful mate. I have a dodgy right knee and have so far seen 4 doctors and all have given different diagnosis.

Doc 1.  3 months back.  X ray taken. Knee replacement required, 360,000 baht please. Passed.

Doc 2.  1 month back. Tendon inflammation. Prescribed anti inflammatory pills which 'cured' the problem. Course finished problem reappeared.

Doc 3.  weeks back. X ray taken. Osteoarthritis. Advised PRP injection which would give 6 months relief. Passed due exorbitant cost.

Doc 4.  Last week. X ray taken. No sign of osteoarthritis / No reason for knee replacement. MRI recommended which I am waiting to do.

This is up north so hopefully your fare better in Bangkok.

Sheryl recently recommended Dr Panya at Bumrungrad as best knee Doc in town.

    Good luck.

Wow, thanks for info Mahseer.  Doesn't sound good.  If you don't mind, what fee were you quoted for PRP injections?

  2. I suspect I have osteoarthritis in both knees, but worse in the right one.  I'm looking for suggestions of where to go for evaluation and treatment in Bangkok.

I would prefer a place that doesn't grossly inflate rates for foreigner, won't try to 'sell' treatments that aren't needed, and can provide a decent level of care (do these places exist?)

I am looking for a long term solution, but am currently planning a trip in 3 weeks that is supposed to include lots of hiking.  Are there short term band-aids that will get me through the trip, and then I can focus on long term solutions after?

    Thanks

  3. Just a follow up post here.

I arrived in Phnom Penh yesterday, Friday, on Bangkok Airways at the scheduled arrival time of 08:50. Took a taxi to the agent mentioned previously at LMN Travel, arriving about 09:30.

Received double entry tourist visa same day. $88. No problems. Not sure if it would have been a problem if the flight was late though.

  4. I'd like to go to Phnom Pehn on a Friday to get a double entry tourist visa, and return on Sunday. I've seen posts that it is possible to get a double with same day turnaround using an agent. What time do I need to get my passport to the agent to ensure same day return?

Bangkok Airways has a flight that is scheduled to arrive at 850. Can I get it to the agent in time?

Also, I'd appreciate it if someone can give me contact information for a reliable agent in Phnom Pehn. An agent was listed in a previous thread, but he didn't respond to my emails.

    Thanks

  5. It is available here, but under a different name - Anxiolan. It is made by a Thai company so is much cheaper than buying Buspar elsewhere. I'm surprised your pharamacist wasn't able to tell you the name used in Thailand.

Pharmacists have a book or online guide to look up different drug names to find the name used in Thailand. There are many drugs that are sold by different names in different countries so having a way to cross reference the names is standard practice. The fact the pharmacist you used wasn't able to do this for you indicates that he/she is probably not a good pharmacist to use.

  6. It depends on the immigration officer. I was in the same situation about 2 weeks ago. I was arriving in Bangkok and only staying for 3 days, then planning to leave the country and return again. On my initial arrival, the immigration officer at the airport saw that I had a tourist visa in my passport. I told him I was only staying 3 days and didn't want to use the visa. He said ok and gave me the 30 days. When I re-entered later, I was able to use the visa.

  7. American going to Vientiane first time for a double entry tourist visa next week and looking for some advice.

I'm flying into Udon on Monday afternoon. I know there are minivans from the airport to the border from the airport, so I'm covered there. How much is a taxi to Vientiane from the border?

Any guesthouse or hotel suggestions for the 2 nights I'll be there? Not looking for rock-bottom, but not extravagant - around 1000 baht.

I will be going to the consulate on Tuesday. What's the best time to arrive to avoid the crowds?

Should I pay the consulate fees in dollars or baht?

When picking up the passport on Wednesday, what's the best time to arrive?

Are there sites where I can download the forms I need for Laos entry and Thai visa?

Are there agents that that will handle the visa process? I don't mind paying a small amount to avoid the hassles and lines. You can message me if you can't give agent info here.

I'm flying out of Udon at 1830. What's the best way to get from the border to the Udon airport? Are there taxis/vans available? What's the cost?

    Thanks for the help.

  8. American planning to fly to Phnom Penh later this month. Would like to get a double entry tourist visa. Never been to the Thai embassy in PP before and would like some information.

Are they issuing double entry tourist visas? Any chance of a triple?

What's the cost? What's the best currency to pay with?

    What documentation is needed?

What are the application drop-off and passport pick-up times? Any advice on the best times for beating lines?

Where is the embassy? What's the best area to stay in for embassy access? Do all the moto drivers know the embassy?

Any recommended agents to take care of the process?

Any other helpful information appreciated. Thanks

  9. My sister works for one of the big computer companies in the US so I can get a discount if she buys a new notebook there for me.

Not sure if I'd have any problems if she sent it to me here in Bangkok though.

Anyone have any experience with this? Will customs want to charge me import tax if she sends it as a gift? Will the notebook make it without being damaged if sent in the original packaging?

Or, should I just buy a notebook here?

    Thanks for your help

  10. There is a liquid electric pre-shave Japanese brand available here. I don't remember the name but it comes in a blue bottle. I've bought it at a couple of different places. I know that the Tokyu department store in MBK had it in its 4th floor supermarket area. I also have gotten it at Big C on Rajadamri and at a Tops supermarket. It seems to be mostly alcohol. It works ok as long as it isn't too humid.

  11. If you are going to be there long enough,, at least a week, it would save hassle and also the time spent on a visit, to send it by express mail or fedex to one of the honarary consulates. They are much easier to deal with.

I like El Paso, the lady there (Lori) processes them immediately and you could have it back in less than a week without having to spend the time to visit the LA consulate and wait around half a day. Contact info for all the honarary consulates is on the Thai Embassy web site.

...but then again, since I'm sure you do want to be legal while teaching here, it might be best if you actually obtained the proper visa to suit your working needs. That way you can save yourself the trouble of going on tourist visa runs and having to worry whether or not the school comes under scrutiny.

L.A. may be tough, but they are fair and if you provide the proper school paperwork, you should have no difficulty whatsoever.

I never said I was working here. The previous post you quoted about my work permit referred to ending employment as a teacher.

I just want to live here, not work here.

  12. I am currently on the 3rd entry of a triple entry tourist visa from Penang. I am traveling to Los Angeles for a family matter next month and wonder if anyone has any experience with the consulate in LA.

Is there any visa I can get other than a tourist? I'm not old enough to be retired and don't have a work permit or business.

If I can only get a tourist visa, will they give me a triple entry? How much will it cost? Am I better off just skipping the LA consulate, coming back to BKK with a 30 day stamp, and then going back to Penang to get a new triple entry?
