  1. Jase, here are the directions in thai to Sakuna, taken from the bangkokhooker website. It is in Samut Prakan.

    Directions in Thai/

I gave that to a taxi driver and he found it OK.

I have only caught sawai and mekhongs in here I don't know if there are cahor in or not. It's cheap as chips though and it doesn't get too crowded, whenever I've been during the week there have been a maximum of 10 other anglers.

You buy the bait and they mix it for you,it's great. The first time I fished there I used a small carp rod and my first bite was from a mekhong so it took a while to get in so you might need something stronger but not as strong as the gear for Bungsamran.I now use a 30lb class boat rod with a shimano 6500 baitrunner reel,30lb line. You buy the foam paste feeders at reception, but I change the hook on them for a barbless hook as theyre easier to take out.The locals use jigging rods and multiplier reels.

I like this place and I will be spending more time here in the future

  2. I think for my next visit to Thailand I will bring a bait casting outfit and some lures. Are frogs the best lure? Near my hotel in cha am I have noticed several ponds. I'll give them a try

I know what you mean about surface strikes being exciting. It's the same when you see a pike following a dead bait being 'wobbled' in the uk

  3. I suppose I'm a lazy angler. I prefer to let the fish come to me rather than chase them. I fish for pike in the UK ,'wobbling' a deadbait which is similar to lure fishing. But in the UK winter it is just too cold to cast a bait out and wait for a bite.

If I ever move to Thailand I may try wild venues for snakeheads, etc.

  4. Heres a few further comments about the above venues:

The more I fish in Thailand the more I prefer the local places like Skunar and Cha'am.These places are more like fishing in the UK (except of course for the size of the beasts in Thailand) You mix the bait yourself, tackle up,bait up,strike, play the fish, land and unhook the fish and release it.At some foreign owned places with exotic species your only involvement is playing the fish. What's the point of that?

Bungsamran would be my favourite place if I was 10 years younger.I just find it too hard now for a day of back breaking battles with big mekhongs. At Skunar and Cha'am it is mainly Sawai with the odd Mekhong, which is great.

I know Hua Hin fishing lodge is foreign owned but I just love being there. The staff are great, the place is lovely, lots of different kinds of fish and good facilities.

Jurassic has the same potential to be like Hua Hin but has a confusing pricing structure (why do you have to pay more to use your own rod?) Greenfields is similar to Jurassic but with too many 'rules'

Shadow Lake and Khao Yai are local places which I will fish a lot when I have more time.

Boon Mar ponds is not really my cup of tea. I prefer fishing with bait

  6. Sakuna is south of Bangkok at Samut Prakan.I have not been there but it is apparently an alternative to BSR. It is cheap (about 300baht/day) and they mix the lam up for you. Plenty of Mekhongs in there but not constant action like BSR. There is plenty on t'internet about it .It's sometimes spelt Skunar. I am going to give it a try next time in Thailand. There are directions to it on the bangkokhooker website http://bangkokhooker-fishing.com/fishing-ponds/sakuna-where-the-grass-is-always-green/ or on john-tom http://www.john-tom.com/FishingInThailand/FishingInThailand.html#Skunar

As for Jurassic,I paid B4800 and had 15 Caho to about 20kg and about 10 redtails to 10kg in a day. I like the place but I like to use my own gear and they charge you more for using your own kit,so I won't be going again. Khao Yai sounds OK.I think I'll give that a try.

  7. This lake is a long lake and there are 2 of them, back to back.It is just north of Cha'am.

As for Jurassic I didn't have a beer there but it was carp after carp with lots of redtails as well. The thing I don't like about Jurassic is that you have to 'join' to use your own gear, which costs B2000.Crazy.Next time I am in Thailand it will be Cha'am fishing park, Khao Yai and Sakuna. i fished Cha'am last year and really enjoyed it,especially the local technique used for the Mekhongs, small balls of paste chucked in and then a bit of paste on your hook.Brilliant.

  8. I visited this lake last year and had a beer and watched the locals fishing. There seemed to be a match on and big nets of small catfish (walking cat fish?) were the result. Does anyone know if there are Mekhongs in here,

I think I will give it a try as I am fed up of paying big prices for the likes of Greenfields and Jurassic (where it costs you more to use your own tackle!!).Any advice on this venue would be appreciated.

  9. I think everyone on here knows the cost of Bungsamran.Hua Hin was 2500 Baht (included bait, soft drinks, lunch and transport as well as tackle).Jurassic was 3900 Baht (included tackle and transport). The clubhouse isn't finished yet but you can order beer and food from a local shop on site.Cha am cost 600 Baht for 2 rods and bags of bread crumb and a loaf for bait(tackle hire not included).Cha am could have been 200 Baht cheaper as there is absolutely no need for 2 rods.

Cha am was by far best value for money and the method involved ( freelining the bread paste ) the most enjoyable.

I will have to try the fishery just outside of Cha am, Khao Yai .

  10. Heres a report of my fishing trips:

Bungsamran: A quiet day by BSR standards, but I picked a holiday weekend when it was dead busy and noisy

Hua Hin fishing lodge: Very enjoyable fishing, lots of species and a very friendly place.

Jurassic Park : Non stop bites from redtails and carp up to about 40lb.

Cha am fishing park; Sawai dead easy to catch, one a chuck. The Mekhong fishing with a lump of paste being free-lined was the most enjoyable method.Thought my carp rod was going to break.

For the money,Cha am has to be the best value and a great day's fishing.

  11. I'm coming to Thailand next month for my annual trip and I plan to fish Bungsamran,Hua Hin fishing lodge,Jurassic park and Cha'am fishing park. Can't wait. As my hotel is on the beach near Cha'am,is it worth casting a line out from the beach?

I haven't fished at Cha'am fishing park before,I've visited and had a beer there and watched other anglers pull out loads of small sawai(about 10 lbs) but from the other posts on this forum it seems there are plenty of monsters in there.

  12. 55Jay, on Yesterday, 12:51 , said: Yep, if it swims, crawls or slithers through the water (or mud), it has been eaten or caught/sold.

I find Thailand completely aggravating having, I suspect like others on this forum, lived by a certain code, a lot of catch and release...

i find it quite normal that an animal is hunted/caught and then eaten. what i find not only aggravating but disgusting is catching an animal, hurt it, in many cases torture it, and all that for fun and "sports" and boasting about it and with utter arrogance mentioning "living by a certain code" bah.gif

Whooops. methinks Naam isn't a fisherman.

  13. I see from 'Bangkokhooker's' blog that BSR have the situation under control with a big pump installed,to direct the excess water from the lake. From the photos on his site the water is up to the level of the platforms, but people are still fishing. There must be millions of Bahts worth of fish in BSR which are not easily replaced,so this is good news. Also good news for me as I have just bought a new jigging rod to try at BSR.

  14. I hope this doesn't seem too insensitive considering the suffering a lot of Bangkok residents are enduring at the moment, but I was wondering how the floods have affected the likes of Bung Sam Ran and Shadow lake.I do hope they haven't been affected and the fish escaped, as they would never be the same again. My wife tells me these areas have been affected.Does anyone know for sure the situation?

  15. This is my first post to this forum so I would just like to say hello, and thanks in advance to any replies.

My question is this: My Thai stepson has a British passport and he entered Thailand on it about 3 years ago.He now wants to come back to the UK.Obviously he has overstayed on his visa but he has a Thai passport,as well. Can he check in at the airport with his British passport and show immigration his Thai passport (do immigration check for an entry visa to the UK?)?
