  1. In over 5 years living in Phnom Penh , I can honestly say I have never had a safety problem , or even anything that could be misinterpreted as such , I am by nature , a friendly , helpfull person , I can tell of a down and out foriegner who slept outside of a store for months , of Canadians who vacationed here and related it was the friendliest , safest country they had visited in Asia , but then , I would be castigated by the nay-sayers who visit all the darkest alley ways for wierd night-life , presumption of course .

The 'Brick throwing' as reported on the Khymer forum , sheds a different light on the subject , the 'Bricks' are small stones fired from slingshots , not intended for visitors as such , but at persons who have peed off the rich kids driving the family mercedes . like many rich kids , they seem to get so fired up over little in thier daily boredom .

Armed robberies ? Have not read too much about those , but if you are a visitor what do you have worth steeling ? So few visitors or expats are caught up in these isolated incidents it is by far amongst the local inhabitants .

Dumball for once I must agree with you.

I moved to Sihanoukville in April 2007, then in June 2009 I moved to Phnom Penh. I have never felt in any way in Danger except on the road while driving in PP.

After living and doing Business in Thailand since 1991, I moved because "Crime is out of control" in Thailand, just check some of the discussion on thaivisa.

When I first moved an English lady had just moved over from Jomtien Beach, she took the Apt next door to me I asked her why she moved she said "I dont feel safe in Thailand anymore" She is still in Snooky.

Also people in Thailand say that Thai's are not liked in Cambodia well my wife is Thai she gets along very well with the Khmer People and has never had one bit of trouble, she loves living here but of course misses her son.

Now before any of you go jumping up & down. Tuk Tar and myself are known in person by some of the members on Thai Visa one of the moderators has been to my home in Phnom Penh for dinner.

Take it or leave it but what I have said is the truth not some crap just posted by a newbie reading a news paper.

    Cheers Tony.

  2. A member here has sent me a PDF copy of Allen Carr Book. I will let you know how it goes. Like I have always said "You only fail when you stop trying"

    Cheers Tony

Im almost finished the book and I am feeling positive about having that LAST puff tonight when I have finished the book. To become an ex smoker after 50 years of filling my body with poison, I guess it will feel like some kind of freedom.

    Cheers Tony

Well I lasted 15 hours without a smoke, then just one will ease it...

Back to the book again.. let you know how it goes.

  4. Syd,

    Please try this>>>>>

I have suffered from Sciatica pain for over 30 years, spent a fortune on Chiropractors. A few weeks ago out of desperation with pain I decided to google Sciatica pain & came onto the above on U Tube and it works for me but I think the secret is doing it 3 times a day. I hope it works for you.

  5. Should you be looking for a Pattaya style place to visit , stay in Pattaya , a place to stay away from the maddening crowd , visit Sihanook-ville , it is not possible to even allude a comparison . There are good clean places to stay at reasonable prices such as the gheco on victory hill plus a few down by the beach , mealy chenda has a good restaraunt also on victory hill .

In Phnom Penh you have street 184 area where the partying goes on with many expats and friendly ladies , fan accomodation starts at $3.00 p.n. , a good clean hotel starts at $12.00 just off of the riverside where you can find most of the bars and cafes catering to tourists .

When visiting Cambodia , please remember it is an immerging country still recovering from a horrific oppression , where millions of mosly educated people were indiscriminately put to death , often with a hoe in the head . Huge steps in improvements have been made in the past 4 years , you need to give it time and be patient with what it is .

Hey dumball >>>> Dont tell them too much or they will all be coming over here.

STAY AWAY>>>> Sihanoukville and Phnom Penh are dreadful places, all dirt roads everyone sleeps in a tent, so on & so on.

Please dont come your pushing prices up. :)

  9. Why uninstall Firefox? Just disable all addons via Safe-Mode (start Safe-Mode, then in the dialog window choose the option to disable all plugins upon next start), takes 5-10 seconds, and you're done. Enjoy your refreshed and lightning-fast surf experience.

During the next hours/days, when you miss any feature that one of your addons has previously provided, I mean if you REALLY miss it and can't live without it, re-enable that addon.

If you can live with Google Chrome you can surely live with Firefox and a reduced set of addons.

I agree that Firefox' selling point as well as maybe its downfall is the number of addons that make Firefox both feature-rich but sometimes also unstable and sluggish.

So it's up to the user to no go crazy on installing addons.

I don't have any problem with Chrome, and it's Javascript engine is surely superior to Firefox right now, but comparing a Firefox bloated with addons with a (nearl) non-expandable Chrome is not fair.

Of course that assumes that your Firefox troubles were really due to a large number of addons.

    welo

What about the Problem with IE ?

I dont like all of the ad-on's, I just like to Keep it Simple but every time you up date FF you get more add-on's.

  10. Next time if you have a problem in firefox, try loading it in safe mode to troubleshoot the problem. You won't have to uninstall/reinstall this way. More info -->

    http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode

First of all I would like to thank everyone who has offered advice & Help.

Here is an up-date>> Fire Fox works fine in Safe Mode.

I have D/L Google Chrome it works great, I wish I had changed over long ago.

Now If I use IE it crashes straight away.

I have uninstall-ed FF and doubt I will use it again after using Chrome.

So where is the Problem? I think its in all the add on's.

Please give me your thoughts and advice on this.

    Thank You.

    Tony

  11. I have had glitches in Firefox for a LONG time. I think Firefox is by far the best browser available, BUT, the glitches are irritating.

When it becomes too much trouble, the only way I have found to fix it is to uninstall the program and all the settings. The only thing I save is my bookmarks. It then works fine for a couple of months. I really think the problems are somewhere in the add-ons because if I don't do a complete uninstall the problems are still there.

It only takes ten or fifteen minutes to uninstall and reinstall. It's worth it to me.

How do I save my bookmarks in firefox ?

    Cheers Tony

Travel dip means no planes at Sihanoukville

    SIEM REAP

SIHANOUKVILLE airport is still struggling to attract airlines due to the enduring slump in the regional travel industry, according to an official at Societe Concessionaire des Aeroports (SCA), the French firm that manages the Kingdom’s airports.

Still, not a single airline has agreed to flights to the airport despite the offer of zero percent airport tax.

SCA’s Chief Planning Officer Tanguy Bertolus said Tuesday that new national carrier Cambodia Angkor Air (CAA), a joint venture between the government and Vietnam Airlines, was showing reluctance to fly to the recently renovated airport due to the difficult economic climate.

“Cambodia Angkor is a subsidiary of Vietnam Airlines and the Cambodian government, and they are not really keen right now to take risks and open new lines,” he said.

“But it is the case for every airline in the world right now that is trying to recover from the economic crisis.”

CAA was supposed to take off from Sihanoukville for its inaugural flight on July 28, but the venue was switched to Phnom Penh at the last minute.

At the time Mao Havannal, secretary of state at the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation (SSCA), said that SCA was hoping to persuade French President Nicolas Sarkozy to attend the airport opening, which has still not occurred.

Prime Minister Hun Sen said in December that CAA had – after less than five months of operations – already started to turn a profit during a year in which air arrivals to the Kingdom fell more than 10 percent, according to Ministry of Tourism data.

CAA has noy yet published a financial report, but Soy Sokhan, the SSCA undersecretary in charge of the airline, said in December that it had increased load factors to between 80 and 90 percent at the time, from as low as 25 percent following its debut.

SCA has reported holding talks with various airlines – including CAA – and remains optimistic that a recent upswing in air traffic would lead to flights to Sihanoukville.

“[Tourism] traffic is coming in again.... we are optimistic, but it is the end of the high season right now, so we have to see how the low season goes,” said Bertolus.

Ministry of Tourism figures showed that air arrivals to the Kingdom rose an annualised 4.75 percent in January, a sign that the industry may be recovering.

Heavy machinery sales grind down amid crisis

    Wednesday, 17 March 2010 15:01 Soeun Say

Lull in sales of diggers, tractors points to long property slump

Diggers lie dormant Tuesday in the lot of a construction machinery seller just across the western side of the Japanese Friendship Bridge. Some construction equipment companies in the capital reported they could only sell a few machines each month since the slump.

SALES of construction machinery have plummeted as much as 80 percent following the global economic crisis, company managers said Tuesday, indicating that a lull in property and real estate has yet to abate.

“With the property market boom in 2007 and mid-2008, customers came to buy construction machinery at my shop to clear land for sale,” said Ly Huy, general manager of Chang Fa Co Ltd, which sells Chinese equipment from a large lot in Chroy Changvar commmune in Russey Keo district. “At that time, I could sell around 50 machines. But now, I only sell two to three machines per month.”

Standing in a lot half-full of excavators, road graders and tractors, Ly Huy is not alone: The economic slowdown quelled wide growth in real estate and property markets, resulting in the cancellation of projects across the capital.

“Our business is still not running well,” said Chhun Bunkea, sales manager for Multico MS Cambodia Co Ltd, which imports equipment from Japan. “Last year, I could sell about seven or eight machines a month. But this year, I can sell only one or two machines.”

Chhun Bunkea said he didn’t expect his luck to improve this year, but that he hopes business will improve in 2011.

“It’s not only my company’s sales that have dropped,” he said. “Many sellers of construction machinery next to my shop have also dropped [sales]. They complain that the financial crisis hit the construction sector in the Kingdom.”

Chea Sokha, director of Sokha Pounding Construction Co Ltd, said Tuesday that since the real estate decline his business had fallen 80 percent.

Prior to the downturn, he was hired for several home-construction projects each month. Now he gets about one a month, too little to pay for office rent and staff, he said.

“Most construction companies can get jobs from road-construction projects only,” he said. “Construction for home-development projects is very quiet.”

Lao Tip Seiha, director of the Department of Construction at the Ministry of Land Management, Urban Planning and Construction, said Tuesday that even amid the slowdown, the number of construction firms licenced by the government had grown from 112 in 2008 to 128 in 2009. Since 2000, Cambodia has licenced 819 construction companies, 166 of them foreign, he added.

  13. The Top 12 countries were France, Switzerland, United States, Luxembourg, Australia, Belgium, Italy, Germany, New Zealand, Denmark, Malta, Sweden.

Of the countries mentioned in posts here, the highest ranking country is Uruguay at # 13.

Bar Malta, the top 12 countries are the source of many of the retirees moving to Thailand (UK missing).

Right...........I think we have a couple of spammers who simply refuse to do something more productive with their lives.

Once again, here is the list of countries we want to focus on with Panama added:

Panama (excellent retirement visa program; mountains/oceans)

Cambodia (massive annual GNP growth.......looks like Thailand; friendly people; English spoken widely; more expensive than Thailand; don't want to get sick there; infrastructure improving but long way to go)

Philippines (safe and unsafe areas; beautiful beaches; storm problem; most people speak English; easy visa system)

Argentina (beautiful country no doubt; great beef; need to examine retirement visa system to see if it is better than Thailand; not much crime now)

    Nicaragua (massive poverty)

    Belize (great lobsters; scuba diving)

    Mexico (gorgeous coastline overlooking Pacific)

Malaysia (heard good around Panang........logical retirement visa option)

    Costa Rica (beautiful; getting expensive)

Vietnam (long coastline; storm prone; developing rapidly)

Indonesia (visa system is not that easy; Bali expensive; other areas much less expensive; earthquake problem)

    Ecuador (too much crime)

Remember, this list is for pensioners making US$1000 - 1800 per month. There options are limited by income.

Given this, I think it might be productive to see how many of the countries they can realistically live in on this income.........with a lifestyle similar to what they can get in Thailand for the same money.

For pensioners, three things are critical: retirement visa income requirements, cost of living, health facilities. We should focus on these variables.

I can not agree with you about Cambodia (Massive annual growth>> Check last years figures, Cambodia is less expensive to live than Thailand, I have been living here for three years.

    Cheers Tony.

  14. About the only thing that Firefox does well is CRASH and a lot of it. It CRASHES often especially if a web session times out and if you had Bangkok's adsl "service" you know how aften that happens. If that CRASH occurs when your screen is locked then your entire computer is CRASHED requiring powere off to reboot.

I never use Firefoz or IE. My notebook's manufacturer'rs tech website only for IE doesn't work requiring PAGES of fixits out of the box to do to access privileges and other such troth and I'm just not going to bother with that crap. For those websites that I used (the Firefox problem started in Wimdows 7) to use in Firefoz I use Chrome or Safari now. My entire online life centers around Opera browser since the beginnings. Every new Opera feature, many of them, have been copied into all the other browsers making Opera the leader of the pack, still. It just doesn't crash like FF and IE OFTEN do.

    You're headed forward!

I have D/L Opera but each time I try to open or run it i get this message>>>Error Reading set up initialization file... Any advice???
