  1. This is not a photography-related question.

I'm producing a graphic novel. I have it scripted and rough storyboards drawn on basic sketch paper. Now's the time to produce the final drawings but I've run into a major snag: I can't find Bristol Board anywhere in Bangkok. I've gone to every art supply store I know (and some I just stumbled upon) but every time I ask if they have Bristol Board I get either blank looks or I get shown something that isn't even remotely close to what I want (though to be sure, I get mostly blank looks). So I'm wondering if there are any comic artists (or anyone else) out there who might know where I can find Bristol Board in the kingdom.

    Thanks.

  2. You are safe - 30 July was your first address report so the 26th of October plus/minus you need to report using a TM.47 form and keep a copy of the receipt in your passport for the next report 90 days later. If you travel out of the country no report is required until 90 days after your return.

I appreciate everyone who has taken the time to help me.

Because I did not fill out a TM.47 in july, I need to be as clear as possible on the basic question: 'did my handing over of address information during the application process (in July, for both the visa and work permit) constitute 'reporting'

The answer seems to be "yes".

    Is that correct?

  3. Can you scan and post the stamp in your passport?

It does seem that you have a 12 month extension. Your next 90 day report will be 90 days from the date you applied at the Immigration Office.

You do not seem to have a problem, apart from a lack of understanding as to your current situation.

Here are the 2 pages that face each other. On the left is the notice to report and on the right the visa.

I blew up the visa to make it easier to read and highlighted the line that says "extension of stay permitted.."

    post-19059-1256302720_thumb.jpg

  4. You do not have a single entry one year visa from Immigration as there is no such thing. What you must have done is converted your tourist visa for 2,000 baht and then obtained a one year extension of stay for 1,900 baht. Check what it says in your passport.

That issue of a one year extension of stay counts as your first 90 day address report so next is due 90 days later (which seems to be what you are planning to do). You will not be owing anything but a filled out TM.47 form.

You do need to be aware that any travel out of Thailand would require you obtain a re-entry permit first - so if you believe a trip will be made it might be a good idea to spend the extra 1,000 baht to obtain now rather than have to worry about it at the last minute.

To say I'm confused would be an understatement, but checking the fine print of my passport seems to verify what you are telling me. I was told by the school that I would need (and they would help me obtain) a non-b so that I could get a work permit. They went with me to immigration and did most of the interfacing. Bottom line, I got what I thought was a non-b, got the work permit and didn't think much of it until the past couple of days when folks (including the head of the english department at my school) started telling me that I'm going to be facing a fine because I didn't 'report' in july.

Now I'm rereading the passport and don't actually see the words "non immigrant visa" anywhere. ( I came here for the first time several years ago on a non-O that was easily obtainable at the time and had the words "Non-immigrant Visa" written boldly across the top.)

What I see are the words "extension of stay permitted until..". The date given is the date my work permit expires at the end of march.

Does this 'extension of stay' constitute a non-b visa? If not, what is it, and how was I able to get a work permit with an extended tourist visa?

    Ay carumba!

I should add that I was told by the school folks at the time that I couldn't leave the country during this period without first 'making arragements' with immigration first. Something I thought was a bit odd. I asked why and they said 'because you have a single entry non-b visa'.

This dovetails with what you say about obtaining a re-entry permit.

  5. Do you have a one year multi entry non immigrant B visa issued by an Embassy/Consulate outside of Thailand?

Or do you have a one year extension of stay issued by Immigration inside Thailand?

Or do you have a 90 day stamp that you will be extended for one year with a visit to Immigration next week?

I have a single entry non-b good for up to 1 year issued at bangkok immigration.

It is required that I report my address every 90 days.

this was issued at the tail end of of my stay on a tourist visa.

I did not leave the country during the transition from tourist to non-b.

Nor did I formally 'report', though I asked if I had to and was told 'no'.

She may have either not understood my ? or simply given me an incorrect answer.

I did however submit my address more than once to

immigration officials during the visa/work permit process.

    I hope that is clear.

  6. People forget that you can get a Single entry Non Immigrant B here.

You reported in July and the paper says 26th October, there will be no problems, the day you received your Non Imm B started the 90 days. Your next report is 26th October, remember it can be 7 days after or 7 days before.

Edit - I mean an extension, when you changed from Tourist to Non Immigrants B, I suspect you did this at a local Immigration office.

    Thanks,

The whole issue revolves around whether or not I was required to report when I transitioned from a tourist visa to a non-b, and, if so, then did my handing over of address information during the application process (for both the visa and work permit) constitute 'reporting'.

  7. If you have a 12 month Non B Visa you have to leave the country every 90 days. So do not have to do 90 day reports.

    Thanks LB.

But I have a white piece of paper stapled in my passport that states I have to notify them of my address on october 26th and each subsequent 90 days.

My concern though has to do with what happened (or should have happened) when I applied for and got the non-b back in july, and whether or not I'm facing a huge fine when I go to report next week.

  8. Not clear what you have.

If you have a 12 month extension from Immigration your application will be your first report.

Your next 90 day report will be 90 days after the day you applied for the Extension.

The fine is 2,000 Baht for not reporting.

I have a 1 year non-b that was issued in late july on the heels of a tourist visa that expired at that time.

  9. I was here during the spring on a tourist visa. Near the end of that period I got a teaching position and the school sponsored me for a non-b and work permit. During the process of applying for those I asked about the reporting requirement. IE, do I have to report my address because I'm not leaving the kingdom to obtain this visa and it'll soon be more than 90 days since I last entered the country. The woman responded; 'No.' Maybe she didn't understand the question because friends are telling me now told that I should have reported at that time. Who's right? When I go to report next week are they going to hit me with a 23,000 baht fine (90 days x 200 baht per day plus 5000 baht for not reporting)?

And even if the woman there didn't understand my question, didn't I report my address when I applied for the visa and work permit? I handed over more than one copy of my lease agreement to various people during the whole process.

Any help on this would be appreciated.

  10. i have used my allotment of 30 day VOA's and was about to get a tourist visa but just read that immigration did away with the 90 day limit on VOA's now that they've gone to the 15 day at a time format, so my question is....

(Since they've done away with the 90 day limit) if i do a border run now will they give me 15 day VOA on the heels of three 30 day VOAs?

common sense tells me yes, but common sense doesn't always rule here. is there anyone that knows definitively? i need to know now because current VOA is going to expire in on sunday, immigration is closed for the holiday and i don't want to overstay regardless of the answer.

    Thanks

  14. Yes, thanks for adding something other than photography to this section. I've always wondered why there aren't more painters/draughtsmen represented here. Although think your painting could benefit from being executed from something other than just photographs. :o Couldn't you get them to sit for you personally? Do some quick paint sketches first perhaps to get your eye in, and then you could use both photographs and the sketches to get a more three dimensional look to your painting? Not criticizing, merely offering practical advice.

    thanks for the feedback.

Maybe a bit of personal background would be helpful: I've been painting for more than 30 years. Have a masters degree in fine art and studied with Eric Fischl in new york. My work is collected in North America, Europe and increasingly here in asia.

    On to your points...

While some might say that slavish adherence to the 3D god is where its at, I would point to just about everyone from Corbet onward as proof otherwise.

There are a lot of great artists who work for years to perfect the 3D illusion in their work and that's fine. While I certainly had to learn how to render things in that manner during the course of my art education I consider it now to be but one tool in my graphic arsenal. I believe that a painting needs to be more than that. Every mark must be there for a reason. Every aspect of the piece has to be thought out from an art historical perspective, a narrative perspective, an emotional perspective and of course a purely personal aesthetic perspective. For me the inherent tension between the painted mark and the perspectival grid, between the painted surface and the paintings intention are but a couple of things that give a painting its unique power. Realism has little to do with 3D 'reality' and everything to do with the residue a thing/object/incident - as perceived by our senses and filtered through our emotions - leaves on our psyche.

On your other point they (the models) DO sit for me personally. I bring them in, design the lighting and setting, pose them and shoot hundreds of photos from which I'll choose one that I feel has painterly possibilities. I work from that. I do not project my photos onto the canvas and trace the contents and then do a paint-by-numbers thing the way some alleged 'realist' painters do. I bring the chosen pic up on my computer screen and use it as I would a live model - as a reference - with the added benefit that she doesn't move and the lighting never changes.

In the case of this series of works I find bkk's ladyboys to be some of the most interesting people I've ever encountered and am proud to call many of them my friends.

    Thanks again for your interest.

  15. Being that the rain has returned, the dollar continues to drop and I still rarely see any 'and the arts' related subjects in this forum (not that I don't love photography) I'd like to present some recent paintings of mine to add a little diversity to things. The models for this group of works are some of my ladyboy friends. Complex, contradictory folks who help make bkk what it is, and I have tried to do them justice in these paintings. All of these are oil on canvas. Some as large or larger than life size. Hope you enjoy.

  16. Does anyone know how i can get to ankor wat by bus? I've been to a dozen travel agents promoting "bus tours to ankor wat" but when I get inside and actually try to book such a thing the dithering starts "well, we don't actually go to ankor wat, we go to the border.. blah blah" or "we don't do buses but we can book you airfare" etc etc..

If anyone knows where I can go to actually book a bus tour to ankor wat please help.

    thanks

  17. Hi,

I've been doing a VOA for the past 3 months. Before that I was here on a non-O (now expired). I need a tourist visa now but went to jack's golf today to sign up for the Lao run and was told they don't do it anymore. Seems from what I'm reading here that I can get one in Vientienne if I go myself. Is that so? Anyone know how long it takes for them to process the app and how much a double entry tourist visa cost? Thanks

  18. I have been living/working here for almost 2 years. Love the city and the thai people. Much as I appreciate photography and talking with my photograher friends I thought maybe this forum could use a bit of balance toward the "arts" side of things so here's a link to my recent work. Since I don't use the net to sell work its one of those free geocities sites so you'll get ads down the side but they can be closed if you wish.

    Enjoy

feolindo .. nice links, nice pics.. I know that takes a lot of skill, work, talent and inspiration. respekt.

hello to hellohello... Would any of you fellow artists be interested in catching up for a beer in BKK?? Im planning to be back in Krungthep in 3 weeks or so..hopefully for songkhran.

Ive seen a couple of other thai art sites such as -

artthailand, thavibu and rama9 I think its called.

As for me Ive lived in inexpensive bkk apartments while drawing fulltime, and I guess my art has a thai or at least asian flavour.

Ahh well, time to cough up the goods..

my work is here - http://www.zanderware.com

    cheers, gord.

Thanks for the link Gord. I like what you're doing. Some really strong compositions. A kind of contemporary mannerism. I found myself thinking of Pontormo and Bronzino while looking at the figurative oils.
