  1. The lack of soap in my hotel room doesn't concern me nearly as much as it's absence from the rest of the bathrooms in Thailand. There must be a whole lot of people out there with dirty hands!

I travel with some of that liquid stuff in my day pack. I'm not a clean freak but just see this as good hygiene.

  2. I think it would be hard to beat this one. Last summer I had enough frequent flyer miles build up with United to fly from NC in the US to Bangkok. Being that it was the summer I really had to take what ever I could get, FF miles are not high on their priority list.

The trip home is where I ran in to the problem. Samui to Bangkok after which I spent five hours waiting for my flight to Singapore. A three hour layover there, then an eighteen hour ride to LA. Six hour layover there, then to Chicago. Five hour layover there, then home to RDU.

All together the trip took the better part of forty eight hours, three drunks, a hand full of V's and a lot of patience.

But at least it was free right, not to mention I had just spent two months in Thailand!

Bright spots in the trip> flying Singapore air, great service

    > Three drunks and the V's

    > This guy that wanted some Thai baht for his collection

I gave him around five hundred baht, he gave me 115

Singapore dollars. Huge profit although I didn't know it at

    the time.

  4. Sorry if I answer your question in a round about way. Today I found someone to rent my house for $800 US (32,000 baht) per month, all of which is disposable income. On top of that I have saved around 40,000 US (1.6 million baht)out of which I plan to supplement my income with $400 US a month for a grand total of $1200 a month (48,000 baht).

I'm renting a house on Koh Phangan for 12,000 baht, yes it's very nice. Electric will be 2000 baht. Mobile phone (I think) 1500 baht. Food, I mostly eat out, 8000 baht. That leaves a little more than 24,000 baht for beer and such.

Guess what, I'm never coming back to the States. hahahahaHa

Just booked my flight out for Sept 6. Life is incredible!

  5. I was about to give Pett some support for his poor english skills until I saw his local time was 11 hours behind Thailand.....now where would that put him ???

11 hours behind Thailand would put him/her on the east coast of USA possibly?

It puts her in front of a computer set for 11 hours behind Thailand....anywhere in the world.

Upon second thought I'm editing this to try to hide my ignorance....is the time stamp you are looking at from the sender's computer setting or is it from some ISP's setting?

Also, what is a proxy and could this just be the proxy's time setting?

Yes, it would put them on the east coast. during the summer(daylight savings) we are 11 hours behind Thailand. In the winter it's 12.

  6. I will give the taxi driver a couple of hundred baht and tell him I want to continue drinking. They will always find you a spot. There was this one spot in Lamai that was no more than a few small buildings in the middle of this field but was open till dawn. About half farangs and half Thais. I thought we were lost because it was down this long dirt road but ended up being pretty cool.

hi citizen i now the place it's called the late bar a bit of a far out place :o

if you need to find it just ask a motorbike taxi to take you to the late bar, simple

That would make sense, I asked him to take me to a late night (after hours)club. HAHA That's just like Thailand, you gotta love it!

  7. I have been to Thailand quite a few times but have never really done much traveling north of Bangkok. I'm not sure why this happend, maybe the draw of the ocean. My next trip will be for six months so Chang Mai is definitely on the list. The question is which do you prefer. The mountainous region of the north or the south? I know it's a simple question but there is alot of difference between the two.

  8. The truth is, that with a few notable exceptions, if you are really a 'reject from your own society' then you dont end up getting on a plane and leaving your country. On the whole, if you're really 'bottom of the barrel' you wouldnt even think of leaving your own country let alone arriving in Thailand or all unfamiliar places.

As for if some people only turn into 'rejects' after a few years spent out in Thailand..well thats another question.

Well said. I think that alot of the people that wind up in Thailand have a tendency to be eccentric, a quality that is often misunderstood at the best of times.

  9. I think home sick for Thailand is a better way to put it. Great website by the way. Just found it the other day but I can't get enough. It will have to do until my return in October. Cheers

  11. I've also had men start massaging me whilst I'm using the urinal - yuk! Often in Bkk restaurants/nightclubs and I've protested! :D

I had this happen once.... it was a little distracting... the same guy then tried to wash my hands for me.... :D

    totster :o

This is a common practise in all good or aspiring Thai pubs/night spots.

I usually say "mai ow khrap" to the massage, as like most people who have been brought up in the Western world, I do feel uncomfortable and unable to relax enough to get the plumbing going... :D

Sometimes I will accept the hot towell, handwash and back/neck massage at the wash basin, and leave a 10 or 20 THB tip...

Do as the Thais do, and always with a smile not a scowl, and you'll have no problem.

    :D

I personaly love the whole touchy feely thing. It's like nothing here in the States. Granted it took awhile too get used too. The ability to escape the preconcived notions of if you touch people of your own sex then you must be gay, What the ###### is all that about anyway. The only person that has a problem with it is you, and it's your responsibility to get over it.

I think it's a matter of personal preference... I don't need to get over anything, I understand, and I know that it is not a "gay" thing... understanding and knowing will not stop me (and I suspect others) from feeling slightly uncomfortable.

Big well done to you citizen821 for adapting so well, you must be very proud... :D

    totster :D

As a matter a fact I am. It took some doing but you wouldn't belive how good it feels once there. This is my first trip here and I have to say it's great. No more TT for me.
