  1. Looking back over my own life, I really never thought it would have been possible to have done many of the things I have actually done.

And if I join the dots, there are times that I never had much hope of any kind of future.

Some years ago I was broke, and I mean broke. I was in Thailand and never had a dime, I lost maybe 10 Kgs in weight, lived in one small fan room with 3 other people ( 3 Thai girls that worked in a go-go bar), at the time it felt like death may be a welcome friend to have come calling. It was one of the lowest points of my life, it was also one of the best things to ever happen to me, when I reflect back.

That was some years ago, and I learned a lot from that experience, I learned about myself, my limitations and my vulnerability, I learnt a lot about other people also, the compassion shown by people that are looked down upon by many others, those Thai go-go Girls looked after me, to the extent of buying shoes cos mine had holes in them, and bringing me Thai street food when they had their 30 Min break mid evening, they had very little, what they had they were willing to share, even with some broke Farang who had nothing.

Fast forward on the years and you would never know that I once was in that situation, you will see a guy that has all the trappings of a good life, New house bought and paid for, Nice car bought and paid for, money in the bank and the kind of security I feel not having to worry about how I'm gonna pay the bills when they come.

That situation of being really broke was one of the best things to have ever happened to me, but it sure never felt like it at the time.

Never give up hope, things usually work out in the end. :o

  2.   I have no illusions that they'll break-up and he'll come running back to me but I am interested to know what they must be going through as I've been on a ###### of a roller-coaster ride this last year.  I'm only now healing (though very slowly).

If I was him, I would drop you like a bad habit. :o

  3. I'm also betting that a large percentage of the 'no-givers' have been ripped off creating a negative attitude.  Most likely by the GF/Wife.

Nah, they just ain't got no money.

Well off guys in Thailand don't mind helping the Family out, after all it's their family too. Well off guys certainly don't care how other people spend their money, even if they are not in the giving situation.

The guys that can't afford it tend to play the " I ain't getting ripped of by Thai people" card, to give the impression that they could afford it if they wanted to, but choose not to.

I have known miserable old farts in Pattaya living in one room for 15 years who will never visit a Thai family for that very reason. Then they sit outside the same shophouse at the same table in the same seat every day drinking Cheap beer all day, cos they won't go to Bars cos " They ain't paying rip off prices ", complaining about Thailand , Thai people, The heat, The rain, The Girls, The boys, Taxi drivers, stupid farangs that send Thai girls money, free spending tourists " Who %$#@ it up for the rest of us ", spout on about how they could do a much better job of Running a country than any Thai could etc etc.....then they skulk back to their 2500 baht a month fan room where they will eat a Boiled Egg sandwich, cos " They ain't paying 20 baht for a bowl of #%$#@!# soup".

No wonder there are so many suicides in Pattaya. :o

  4. ]

I took your suggestion to heart and started a thread about good things in Thailand. Please visit and tell me why you love this country, I really want to know, I need some happy stories. Thanks.

I think you will find that in most Forums dominated by Westerners concerning Asian countries, there is the Superiority attitude to get over.

If you go to a Japan orientated Forum, the westerners do nothing but complain about Japan.

    :o

  5. I know Udon has a Sony shop (but can’t remember the location – I’ll ask the wife this weekend)  – bought the in-laws a new Sony last year – can’t remember if it was 29 or 34.  The shop has the whole range – as once the sales staff saw me walk thru the door they took me right back to the huge flat screen jobs.

    TokyoT, thanks,

It's a 34" CRT tv I'm after, I don't really want a Projection TV, and Plasma TV's are too expensive and too new, the 34" Normal style Sony Wega is what I am after. CRT TV is probably the best Picture and has proven technology having had over 50 years of existence.

    About 39,000 Baht in Bangkok.

    Cheers. :o

  6. I pay for my gf's Sister to go to School, she is nearly 17 and if she wants to go to Uni when she is 18, I will pay for that also.

I opened a Bank account for her on her 16th Birthday, and put 5000 baht in, and I put 7500 in her Bank last time I was home, I done that cos she still had 2700 baht left after 6 months, and she had bought her school clothes herself, you should have seen her face when she found out she had just over 10,000 baht in the bank :D .

    Am I stupid, I don't think so.

Would I have done the same had it been a brother?

    Not a Chance!!! :D:D:o

  7. Yes there is a sony shop downtown, for the life of me I can not recall which circle it is by, but it is not in the Robinson area.

Thanks ray. looks like Udon Thani it is, I will maybe stay overnight there and have a cruise around first day, then pick it up next day and drive back to Loei, if they have what I am looking for, if Not I guess they can order it for me. :o

    Cheers Lads.

  8. Not this again

    TV reruns

    YAWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWN

That's why I suggested a FAQ, but no one seemed to like the idea.

    Oh, well....

Well it sure sounds like a good idea to me

    Come on Larry,

When newbies come along and ask what they think are reasonable questions, it gives you a wonderful opportunity to complain about Thailand and Thai people. :o

If people only used the search facility, this forum would die, as ALL subjects have been discussed time and time again, there are only so many Thai related Threads one can discuss without repetition. :D

  9. The property is debt free, thanks to me. But, there may be other debt unknown to me, owed by family.

    a2396,

If it is unknown to you, it will certainly be unknown to the members of this forum.

All you can hope to get are responses like " Give em nothing " and " Let them work " and " I don't have to give anything cos my wifes family are rich "

from people on this forum whom you do not know and may well be just stirring things up. Anyway, none of these responses help you.

You say you are retired, therefore you are not a kid, you should know the woman you are living with, we don't, you know the family, we don't, do what you think is right. :o

  10. Does the Tesco in Udon not have any?

Try Udon. Upstairs in Robinsons, the big electrical shop on the top floor beside Tops.

Cheers Jimmy, I will probably have to have a drive into Udon, I know I can get one in Bkk, but it's a pain getting it back from Bangkok to Loei.

Looks like I will be having a trip to Udon then in a few weeks.

I am overseas now, that's why I am asking local guys that may be going to the Shops in these places and give me some pointers.

Thanks for the tips lads. :o

  11. What is considered "normal", standard or reasonable in terms of a farang assisting (providing money) to 1. The Thai "traditional wife. and 2. Other family members, ie. parents, brothers, sisters on a monthly basis?  How much and to what extent should the daughter, ie my wife be expected to dole out to her family each month??

Depends on the family, depends on your wife and depends on you.

If you give money to your Thai wife, it is hers to spend in any way she wants, and unlike western people, Thai people will want to help out their Parents and immediate family.

In a land of no Social Security or Pensions family members tend to rely on each other a lot more than they do in the west. The richer help out the poorer in general, without years and years of reminders and guilt trips that one comes across in the West when family members are asked to help each other. ( My father used to leave the price stickers on my christmas presents when I was 7 years old )!

Don't get all resentful, you are no different to a Thai guy, who is also expected to help out his wifes Family, (as well as his own direct family), if he has the means to do so, and they need help. :o

  12. I concur Bilko, top time was had by all when we went to Tokyo. Hong Kong is also good but again more expensive than Bkk.

I think Bangkok only scores well because of the cost factor.

Hong Kong I have never liked, the manners of the people put me off really giving it a go, I was 2 weeks on Lamma island and it was ok there, but when I went to Central, I did not like it at all, they must be amongst the rudest people on Earth.

Don't get me wrong, I think Thailand is a really great place, but I must say Tokyo with it's wonderful Transportation systems, the most Polite Taxi drivers in the world, and the manners of the people in general really impress.......

If Tokyo was as cheap as Bangkok, I am sure it would be Number 1. :o

  13. Its no secret readers !!!!!!!    Here in Thailand over 80% of the Population are ALCOHOLICS.  They wake up drunk, are drunk during the daytime and go home drunk after work then they hit the bars and go home even drunker.

Dave, you should stop hanging round with English teachers in Thailand, they are distorting your views. :o

  14. I will be able to buy a 29 inch TV anywhere, but what about 34" Sony tv's etc....

I am not sure if Big C and Lotus do these size of TV, I am not really interested in a Projection TV, just a CRTV. ( normal tv set )

Is there a Sony shop in Udon Thani, or any specialist shops?

    Thanks guys. :o

  15. What a tragedy. Young kids + alcohol = disaster.

    Not only young Kids.

Alcohol is a very dangerous drug, if you manufactured a pill that had the same potency as Alcohol, it would be a Class 1 drug, and you would get the death sentence for making it.

These accidents involving Alcohol are a daily occurence in nearly every country in the world.

70% of road deaths in USA have Alcohol in the equation somewhere, considering there are 42,000 road Deaths in USA per year, that makes Alcohol a huge problem.
