Democracy you Dutch wouldn't know it if it bites you on the bottom. Laugh and clap about that. Again I not against Sinn Fein winning but your ignorance of who they were and are is astounding as your constant anti UK rhetoric.

There is more chance of Germany invading Holland again then Ireland unified. Obviously you are way out of touch with loyalists in Northern Ireland..

    "Who they were"

Past tense. Upon your own admission they are no longer what you believe they are. Did you have any issue with the party that was in power in Ireland for the last 9 years? Maybe you should look up who they were also.

I am awaiting all those anti brexit posters supporting Sinn Fein. Lets remember who these are. This party supported terrorist attacks on innocent civilians, including women and children.

They are a nationalist party on the far right. If you want to compare them with a party in the UK I would put them on the spectrum of Britain First, only probably further, as they have close links with murderers.

    Clearly clueless.

Sinn Fein are far left, not far right and nothing like Britian First - who have clocked up murders fairly recently

Funny you dont see the comparison. For Mandela's funeral, gerry adams was invited to be in the gaurd of honour. Not sure if any British politicians had the same honour?

He was chosen due to his relationship with mandela and his work towards eventually bringing peace to NI. Internationally, Adams has earned some respect, whether select sections of britain may like it or not.

Also worth noting....Martin Mc Guinness ate lunch with the queen of Ingland just a few weeks ago. A positive development in Hiberno-Anglo relations and nice to see things moving the right direction.

Did you change your TV name for this thread macsurtain? You don't seem to have posted anywhere else.

You like to speak of collateral damage mac, but there is a big difference between that and indiscriminate murder by planting bombs deliberately to kill and maim. As for instance your good friends killed at least one genuinely innocent catholic at the Canary Wharf bombing that you feel was fully justified.

Is it true that the provos killed more catholics than the loyalist paramilitaries?

why would i change my TV name? I am curious as to where this suspicion comes from. Perhaps this is the only thread I have ever bothered to post on?

I never said anywhere that they were my friends. If you need reading lessons i can pass on a number to a good teacher. Have a good day.

  4. Released without charge. No surprise. PSNI have nothing on him.

What happened to jean mc conville was awful. That said, the PSNI need to be consistent in following these atrocities up. I dont hear of them following up on the murder of joan connolly at the hands of another british parachute regiment in ballymurphy. If there is no balance, cracks will appear in the already fragile peace process, leaving the catholic communities to lose trust in the PSNI.

Here is a little piece about joan connolly:

joan was shot as she left her place of safety and went to the aid of a young boy (Noel Phillips) who was shot and wounded by the same regiment. Joan was shot several times in the head and body, with injuries so severe that part of her face was blown off. Joan's autopsy report indicates that Joan bled to death. Eye witnesses of the events claim Joan was blatantly refused emergency medical attention, even as she cried out for help.

The murder of Joan, the only woman shot in Ballymurphy during one of the trouble's worse events, left husband Denis without a wife and left eight children without a mother. The extent of Joan’s injuries was so horrific that Denis struggled to identify her body; he finally did on his third attempt aided only by Joan's red hair.

  5. My goodness. Adams was involved in many atrocities. I was a (research) journalist in NI for a year during the Operation Motorman and I can honestly say his fingers were everywhere. I would not trust this man as far as I could throw him. Having said that I always had enormous sympathy for the Catholic minority so I'm not drawing ideological conclusions.

But catholics are now the majority, not a minority. Challenging times ahead for the orange brigade!

  7. Cant think of many bombings that 'targeted' innocents conducted by the P.I.R.A. In war however, there is unfortunately collateral.

I do remember a british parachute regiment that slaughtered innocent women and children outside their homes in derry. I dont remember any of them serving any time for their war crimes. I could go on list further examples, but im beyond that now at this stage.

Seems a lot of comments here are taking the guilty till proven innocent approach.

Comments mentioning some of the atrocities of war are fairly one sided. You cant forget the current form of the IRA are a product of the brutal and barbaric acts committed by the British Armed Forces in northern Ireland. Anything the IRA did was a reaction to injustices committed by foreign troops in their country. Labeling them as child murderers is a bit fresh, considering the british army are somewhat responsible for the deaths of people IN places like afghanistan today.

Didn't the IRA plant bombs to kill innocent men, women and children indiscriminately in N.I and the UK. ?

Is that what "the cause" hero's should do in your opinion ?

    Targeting civilians by the IRA?

Harrods bombing 1983 (murdered civilans included 1 US citizen), Enniskillen 1987 and Omagh 1998 are just 3 of the more horrendous examples. So let's not be silly and claim that parailitaries did not target civilians.

Overall the IRA murdered 728 civilians during the Troubles. It should also be added that Protestant paramilitaries murdered 868 civilians. Civilian deaths attributed to the security forces was a regrettable 187, though some of these have been subsequently claimed as paramilitary members.

Armed insurgency and combating it is not a pretty activity but at least Northern Ireland has largely moved away from the horrors of the 1970's and 1980's. It will take several generations to remove the bitterness and anger held within the different communities, but normality is gradually returning.

It is no secret that both Adams and particularly McGuinness were active and senior players within PIRA with blood on their hands. But the same could be said for many of the first generation of Israeli leaders in relation to their insurgent activities prior to 1948.

If you want to resolve a conflict you have to suspend hostilities and deal with people who are not the most pleasant but need to be part of the deal if you want to make it work. Most conflicts are inherently political in nature and in their objectives. A solution has to be a political one. The military can merely hold the ring and attempt to minimize casualties and incidents, while waiting for a political solution to be arrived at.

FAir comment. but, the RIRA, who are more of a death squad than Freedom Fighters, are responsible for Omagh, not the PIRA. The PIRA are responsible for enniskillen, but they did not target civilians, it was a miscalcualtion and unfortunate. Tell me the British Army has never had a 'miscalculation' that resulted in death.

Worst thing Britain did tho was putting military personnel onto the streets on NI, it lead to several 'miscalcualtions'

  8. I worked in Northern Ireland often during the troubled 70's and had the misfortune to see the results of IRA 'freedom fighting ' on more than one occasion. Anyone who believes such people are some kind of hero's or modern day Robin Hood's are naive, deluded and ignorant characters. Murdering, thieving butchers would be a more apt description.

During that period did you have an oppurtunity to see the results of UDA / UVF, British Army or RUC freedom fighting or enforcement aswell, or are you suffering from tunnel vision?

Seems you conveniently forgot a bomb at a shopping mall in the UK, one at Canary Wharf in London and the one that killed many innocent folk in a N.I. high street. You also forgot the folk who where executed in their own homes in front of their family.....Real hero's eh...........coffee1.gif

Canary Warf was clearly a financial target. The Uk mall was most likely to strike fear into british citizens and have them pressure their government to withdraw their forces from N.I. These were the objectives of those bombings, but unfortunately, in war there is collateral. The PIRA gave one hours notice to prevent the deaths of innocents. One could easily ask, do the US or UK or any nations occupying troops give notice before a strike in Afghanistan / Iraq etc?

I don't know of this case but sickening if true. However, there is a clear distinction between renegade members of the armed forces and a deliberate policy of the IRA to kill and maim innocent members of the public.

Further reading on that incident :

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bloody_Sunday_(1972)

Atrocities were committed by both sides, no doubt about it. No point bickering about it. Whats done is done and people need to move on. More to the point, I reckon this has more to do with the upcoming elections in the republic. Sinn fein have been rising massively lately in popularity and Adams' questioning by police has been timed perfectly and is most likely part of a smear campaign by one either fine gael or fianna fail, releasing evidence so close to the elections.

  12. Thanks for the replies guys.

Typo - meant may 3rd not march!

I wasnt aware i could keep my passport during processing. for some reason i thought they took it and kept it. some good advice.

So I am thinking, the best option seems if i do an immediate visa run, perhaps a day or two before the six months is up. it expires 19th of oct, so if im right i could go to ranong, 16th or 17th of april, as i think 19th is the deadline for the 6 months. and have another 30 days stay . Then I can then have my visa transferred to my new passport. I can submit my new passport application on the 30th of April with the US consular outreach. The processing time is 2 weeks, so ill be cutting it tight to have it back in time for the next visa run.

How long will it take to be delivered by mail does anyone know?

  13. Hi,

Im on US passport. Got the 30day on arrival. However, i need to renew my passsport as its only 9 days until im inside the 6 month rule and can no longer do visa runs.

I need to get a 7 day extension to allow me to meet the US embassy that should allow me until this march 3rd. However, I can sumbit my passport application april 30th as im not in bangkok. It takes two weeks to process the passport. Just wondering has anyone had this before. Do i get a letter of exemption from the embassy as the passport overlaps the visa and technicically i will overstay by about 10 days while waiting for my new passport. or do i neeed to leave and how? advice appreciated!

  15. hey all,

last week I crossed from ranong to burma. cost me 300bht (10 dollars) for entry to burma, and 200bht for the longtail across and back from ranong. 500 bht got me 30 days stamped in my passport on a transit there as I have a US passport. It took me one hour to do the whole thing. easy peezey lemon squeezey.

Question, i would like to do to the same soon in kanchanaburi, is this possible? or do i need to start going back to scambodia and fill my passports with stamps and stickers again.

if anyone has crossed recently, departing from bkk, please update!

  16. i am in the same boat as you. i have had two permits already, and cant get another, so i am interested to see the replies here. I am currently working illegaly and financing my own visa runs for 7months with out any help from my school. Not a fantastic situation to be in so I understand!

The exams you are doing in january, are they this teacher development at one of the universities around here that can help get the teachers licence? My HR department has told me I need the thai culture course and to do the teacher development to get the licence. As it is their responsibility, I have been asking them to register me for it. They have told me that there wont be another teacher exam for another year, so february contradicts what they say. They have also told me there is a change in the Thai culture course curriculum, so there wont be any course for this for an unknown amount of time.

In my case, I am pretty sure the school is trying to pull a fast one on me by not paying for these courses and my permit, so I am interested to know what exams you are doing in feb.

Anyway, as far as I know, you need to have the culture course and the development exams, and they are the quickest ways to getting the licence. In the long run, A PGCEi will suffice, but they only accept the final certificate, not letters stating your place on the course.

On a side note, I am also being taxed while working illegaly on a tourist visa. School refuses to give me my tax as they say they will backdate my tax when I get my work permit - which will be never. Doesnt seem to add up! Share your thoughts please!
