  1. I thought the simple rule to avoid all this was don't move to the sticks. Avoid hillbilly area's and you don't get the speakers. tongue.png

Nope. I live in Banglamung and the f***ers are blasting outside our window from 7 in the morning. My wife is p***ed at me for being upset about it. No music just propaganda.

  2. Thanks to everyone for great advice on finding a tailor in Pattaya. After reading this thread I found Burda Tailor on South Pattaya Rd across from Friendship Supermarket. This is a Chinese-Thai family that has owned the shop for decades.

They weren't cheap but they provided all the details and quality I asked for. I had time for several fittings and they made changes as I requested them, no complaints. I indicated requirements like sturdy, hand-stitched buttons and buttonholes; wool-cashmere blend, just a little polyester to make it easy to iron; preshrunk canvas chestpiece; perspiration piece and reinforcements; and special pockets for train tickets, passes, coins, etc.

For a two-piece suit with two pairs of trousers and four dress shirts I paid 12,000 baht. Your price may be less if you aren't as particular about details, or if you haggle (I focused on getting what I wanted and didn't bargain on the price). Excellent service and performance, I recommend them.

  3. "The real wonder is, why do ANY Nigerians get permission to enter the kingdom? Sorry but they're all crooks. Don't mean to generalize, but EVERY DAMM ONE OF THEM is a crook, and that goes for the Nigerian ambassador."

That's what a man down pub told me the other day. Of course, I assure the moderators that I disavow this sentiment completely as it is shurely ludicrous in the extreme. :jap:

  4. Ah yes, 'pandering' ... we can't have democratically elected governments giving the people what they want, can we?

Oh wait, the Democrats and Yellow Shirts wouldn't know anything about that, so we shouldn't ask them.

What's next? An end to some of the OTHER protectionist taxes that place unnecessary burdens on citizens, hurt tourism and encourage smuggling?

No. The PTP are planning to bring the rice pledging program back, which will encourage smuggling of rice from places like Cambodia.

No idea what "rice pledging" means, but I like your signature.

  5. Looks good to me. The current skywalk has been a great success, convenient and uncluttered. No intersections to cross, so it's faster and safer than walking at street level. And it IS uncluttered with street vendors, for the reason pauln outlined above, so we can expect the same of the new skywalk.

Money well spent, except for the inevitable backhanders of course.

  6. I don't want to destroy any property as that could land me in hot water. One thing I'd considered was placing a hood of some kind over the speaker, directing the sound upward.

I'm gratified to learn from Bobbin's post that a small number of people petitioning can get something done. Failing that, a small ANC device would be fine -- I'll see if I can pick one up in Akihabara.

I don't want to destroy anything and I certainly have no need to defeat anybody. I just want to get what I want.

  7. Some good, useful and practical suggestions, thanks!

Active noise control or the donation to the pua yai sound like the best options. I'd love to snip the wires but there's a security camera mounted on the same pole, and not too many people in the neighborhood look like me as you can imagine, so with my luck I'd probably get rumbled.

  8. Hello board members,

I live in a house outside Pattaya. I love where I'm living, it's safe and reasonably convenient, everything is great. Just one thing is driving me nuts.

    It's the village loudspeaker.

Directly behind our house, mounted on a concrete pole, is a loudspeaker. Every morning from 7 to 8 and again in the evening from 5:25 to 6:00, it broadcasts to the entire neighborhood a mixture of luk teung songs, local news and the rambling thoughts and reflections of someone I assume is the village headman. It's loud and impossible to ignore. Apparently this is a not uncommon arrangement in Thailand.

The question is, what can I do about it?

My wife and I have repeatedly called Pattaya City Hall, to no avail. I would like to get a shotgun or RPG and blast the crap out of the thing, but the authorities might take a dim view of this approach.

Is there someone better I should call? Some kind of engineering solution? Has anyone else had this problem?

Most grateful for any constructive suggestions. Thank you.
