  1. Thanks for all the replies to my request for information. The soi Deserted mentions below is the L-shaped Soi LK Metro that connects Soi Diana (the sign on Second Road says Soi 13) with Soi Buakaow. There must be a dozen places where these three sois meet with nice rooms in the 400 to 700 baht range. The few that did not have their own free internet wifi in the rooms were often close enough to the ones that did to pick up their signal. Since Soi LK Metro is only three years old and constructed by LK himself, the rooms are new and quite nicely furnished for the most part. Of the many I checked, the ones I preferred were Place2Bee, Metro (on LK Metro) and Jasmine Mansion (on Buakaow), but there were several other options. It's a nice area with the usual go-go and beer bars with farang restaurants, but the real Thai restaurants on Buakaow are cheap and tasty -- something you don't get on Beach Road.

There is a place just off Soi Buokhao that has wifi in all the rooms for that price. Unfortunately I can't rememeber the name of the hotel. However it is easy to find. There is a small and very new side street between Soi Diane and Soi 11 with a number of go-go bars. You can access it from either Soi Diane and Soi Buokhao. It's about the third hotel on the left if coming from Soi Buokhao. You'll see the place, it's easy to spot.
  2. Anybody know a florist who can deliver some flowers tomorrow?

    Thanks.

I have not yet met the Thai woman that is touched or moved by receiving flowers; on Valentines day or any other day. Getting flowers is just a normal part of their trip to the market for most Thais; and of course it's really, really cheap here.

I'm not sure if she was touched or moved (can you ever really know for sure with Thai women?), but she was certainly enthusiastic, happy and grateful.

  3. I've been getting a "connection has timed out" error message for the past two days. I have two other web sites hosted by the same ISP in the States with no problem. When I contact the ISP hosting service says it works fine for them. Here in Chiang Mai I am using True Internet for my connection. But when I go to a censorship bypass site (I guess I'm not allowed to mention it here) the site comes up OK. I'm sure it's not being censored, having nothing to do with politics or sex.

Can anyone else access it? Any guesses what might be going on?

    What is the URL?

    Bapak

It's in the title to my post: computernomad.com

  5. Must not be any Californians in this forum. Yesterdays earthquake was about the weakest I've ever experienced that could still be "felt". It was nothing but a good opportunity to remind people of actions to take during an earthquake. Stay away from windows, keep a flashlight next to your bed, go outside (wear shoes), do not stand next to building.

Maybe it depends on where you were or what you were doing at the time.

I lived in San Francisco for 15 years and was in the Big One of 89. That was a fair sized quake. :o

I'm from Alameda near San Francisco and went through the 89 quake also. I live near Kad Suan Kaew and didn't even notice the little thing. How do you tell the difference between a 4.5 and a truck driving by anyway?

  6. What are the bullet points to make it on your list. No offense but it seems trashy bar girls and lots of farang are some of the top.

    Warm up

    More

    Monkey Club

    Old School

    Chalomburi just closed :/

Baangrak and 12 have no quiet areas to sit and drink, so I am going to leave them off the list.

Actually, no point to the list whatever. Just did it for a giggle.

  7. Linda Bar is pretty hard-sell... more than almost any other bar i know

    really ? why? :o

I haven't noticed a hard sell either. They won't talk to me much until I buy them a drink, but I never got bugged, only left alone. In fact, I can't think of any bar in Chiang Mai even remotely "hard sell" compared to Bangkok.

  8. 1. Number One. The name says it is. Lot's of pretty smiles, no hassles, talkative expats.

    2. Can Do Bar. I haven't been there yet but any place that gets condom bouquets at their grand opening is OK with me.

    3. John's Place. Small Chang, 28 baht. Mekong whiskey, 28 baht. That's with a "Pathetic Old Man Discount Card."

    4. Linda's Bar. A dozen girls waiting out front at 6 PM can make a man thirsty.

    5. Foxy Lady. Only place that serves up Beer Lao with bikinis.

    6. The Peak Pool Bar. Wild turkey, Jose Cuervo...90 baht.

    7. The Pub. British Peacocks replace the bar girls.

    8. Chiangers and Bangers. But only during a ladies pool tournament.

    9. Marijuana. Would have been Number 1 except they don't have any. Not many customers either.

    10. Tiger Bar. Good thing they roasted a whole pig instead of a tiger at their grand opening.

why isnt Red Lion or OMalleys on this list? :o

Because I couldn't think of anything clever to say.

  10. tigerbeer is technically correct. Not that it matters. Halloween isn't a holiday in the U.S., but it sure is celebrated. Here's the link to public holidays at the TAT web site:

    New Year's Day : Jan 1

Makha Bucha Day : late January to early March

    Chakri Day : April 6

    Coronation Day : May 5

    Visakha Bucha Day : May

    Asanha Bucha Day : July
