  1. My first reaction is, you don’t know Thailand or your potential bride well enough to get married yet. Sounds like the beginning of another long tragic tale of misunderstandings and broken dreams.

So so true! It is rubbish to even think that you pay anything at all for a wife. You'll be paying her and her family forever anyway. Make sure you have a pre-nuptial agreement and if you buy land, make sure you have a Usufruct in place. I did and now count my blessings every day, but I'm one of the lucky ones!

  2. Hi there,

The laws have changed a lot recently, they dont have to spend any time in quarantine as long as you do a rabies blood test, send it to an EU lab and they confirm that they dont have rabies, after the date of the blood test you have to wait 3 months then you can enter the UK and not go through quarantine. I am currently trying to explore other routes and options, I am trying my best to be able to keep them I have been so looking forward to getting them back to england and taking them to the beach and woods sad.png

I'd like to take them, but I heard that a lot of labrador owners go blind!! No seriously, I know these 2 dogs very well and I know how it must be breaking your heart mate...wasn't so long ago they were pups jumping all over my pug up here in Surin. Best of luck finding a good home for them.

  3. I had a usufruct on my property when I divorced my wife. My ex wife totally ignored the usufruct and transferred the property to her mother without my knowledge. My ex mother in law had a lawyer send me a letter to quit the property within 15 days. Because of the deceitful way in which all was done...my ex wife moved overseas with my 2 sons by the way, the Judge ordered that I can live on the property where I built 2 large homes, a factory, swimming pool until I die. That the land be transferred back from the ex mother in law and in to my 2 sons names. My sons are 12 and 10 years old. The original title had to show that this had been ordered by the court and no one can change the title to others even if I die until the boys have reached adulthood and can make their own decisions.

Thanks for providing a first hand report of the system in action and great to hear you (eventually) had a good outcome. If you don't mind sharing the info, how much did this situation end up costing you in terms of legal expenses?

    Less than 100k baht

  4. Yes, you could put it in the name of a child, but I'm pretty sure "the child" could not then grant either lease or usufruct. Reason is that this would not be in the interests of the child, and the court would protect the child interest above your own.

    1. Minors can't enter into contracts so the matter would need to go to court to resolve, and yes at that point a judge might well consider the interests of the child and any other relevant matters. LivinLos, have you encountered anyone who has actually been able to do what you have suggested?

    2. Mark, putting property in the name of a child is a good idea for some people depending on their specific personal circumstances. Be aware though that this approach has its own peculiar strengths and limitations. Suggest you search for some of the many earlier threads on this topic for further details

By the way, being married under Thai Law gives even us as foreigners 50% of property aquired during the marriage. I was lucky as I feel I got 100%. The ex wife or her family are not permitted on my property without consent.

  5. Hi Everyone.

    This is my first post.

I travel to BKK about 5 times a year for R & R. I live in Singapore. (Yes, it's nice to be so close to the LOS. :)) I'm completely in love with thai culture, food and the general way of life in BKK and I am actually making plans to relocate there within the next year or so.

    My question:

I have 5 million baht to invest in a business in BKK; one which would give me enough income to sustain a simple lifestyle in BKK. I'd like some business suggestions please. What would you invest this 5 million baht in?

    Thanks!

    ian

Right now I think the best business in Thailand is property, with the world economy in crisis many people want to bail out and you can get some real good deals now in Bangkok. If you buy in the right locations and get a discount price, your property will appreciate over time, and while you wait you can lease out your condos and make a nice return that way too. Plus you don't have the usual hassles of setting up a business, company filings, taxes, accounting fees, license fees, employee theft, payroll, bribes, etc. But you have to know where and what to buy for the rental market here and how much the property is really worth (as there is no MLS Real Estate service here like we have in the USA that shows what similar properties sold for before).

I agree with those that suggest you keep it in the bank.

I've got a business in Thailand & the clowns you must deal with daily makes it all too hard...Especially for a 'Newie'.

You will soon fall out of love with most things "Thai".

  6. The plot thickens. :D

    Indeed.

Time to send a full report to the UN for Human Rights before Kofi Anan leaves office.

I know of a few hundred million people who didn't even have a meal today; misery everywhere... :o

    LaoPo

And maybe a lot of homeless farungs in Samui and Pattaya..after the Government officers throw them out of their homes for using dummy companies to purchase the property. That poor woman in the U.K. might be able to come home to L.O.S and occupy one of the vacant properties. I reckon a lot of the people worrying about one Thai woman that fell thru the net in the UK. had better start worrying about the Farungs that are going to get pushed through it in Thailand.

  7. I hope they beat Japan. In fact I would like to see them go all the way in their group. I've got to support Australia. After all they are part of Great Britain. :D

Sorry you are wrong Ausy is attached to NEW ZEALAND. :o The bottom end of N.Z. HAHAHAHA :D

At least Australia made it to the Cup and I guess along with all your Countrymen, You'll be watching it on tv. in Australia and barracking for any team that plays us!! :D

  8. What a cricket game!

Bangladesh awesome for the first two days. They can be very proud of their performance and can hold their heads up high.

Australia given a bath early and looking very ordinary with bat and ball, but proved their class and guts to fight back against impossible odds. Can also hold their heads high.

Sixty million, bad sportsmanship poms with their heads bowed, weeping into their warm insipid ales bemoaning a lost opportunity to stick the boots into Australia.

Why wouldn't we treat Bangladesh seriously...I remember that we were beaten by the Poms once :D

Only once in a couple of decades, and the way the poms are currently imploding it should be a doddle to put them back in their place at the end of the year. :D

(hows retirement treating you? :D )

Terrific Mate...Now the Press have stopped hounding me..Had about 30 units all wanting a story..including A current Affair etc., they can't believe you could give up a Politics for life in Surin. My Thai house was the most famous house in Oz for 3 weeks and all had a different slant or story!! :o

  10. I've got UBC that I still pay about 2000 baht a month for, but I've also got PSI with the South African sports channels...i.e. Supersports 1 to about 7 or 8 with every imaginable sport including rugby, cricket and all the soccer games...formula racing etc....cost me about 20,000 baht for a 1 off payment. as Psast 7/10 and Telekom..these have al that UBC has to offer...the reason I keep UBC is that I've notice during the heavy storms, UBC will function better with the smaller dish than the other larger dish.

  11. THanks for the information. I am in Surin now looking for a builder and prices. Just have to find the perfect plan. As long as I'm on here one more question, Do you guys that have houses built already, mind when some stranger comes to your door asking about your house. I have been tempted to do this just not sure of the reception.

Check your messages, Friend....I may be able to help.

  12. I voted for a trip to Surin.................................................don't know why though. :D

Lucky win for your boys yesterday Lamshade! :o !

I reckon it should be held at your Kaff, Lampman...and you shout us all one of those Big Breakfasts..Man, it was good the other day!!! :D

I plan on moving to Korat permanently Anyone interested in sharing some info with me during this time? I'll buy the drinks. :D

Hi Cliff...You should drop over sometime!!!! :D ...Just joking,a lot of us in Surin, make yourself known at the Farung Connection...Martin knows where everyone is.
