  1. I finally found a Steed and bought it yesterday. I went to the owner and they gave me the papers. I went down the street to talk to a cop and ask him if what they gave me was enough if he stopped me on the road with no plates. He said for sure it was enough, but I had to get insurance also. So I went across the street to a shop that does insurance and they said yeah, just need my address and they would do it. Gave them my address and about ten minutes later I had insurance on my new bike.

Yeah no plates but the cops says it does not mater... they just want to see your papers so you have to keep a copy of them with you all the time as well as a copy of the insurance. oh and by the way I found the Steed about three hours outside of the city of ChiangMai. 65,000Bt Took a little work for find one outside of the city that was for sale but much cheeper out of the city.

  2. Looking to buy a fully legal (with green book and plate) 400cc Honda Steed in the Chiang Mai area

Must be well maintained and come from a loving home!

Don't think you will find one with the green book and plates and all... If you do you are looking at minimally 130,000Bt from what I understand. From what I understand it is also possible to buy one with out the green book and get it later.

I have been looking for one as well so it will be interesting to find out what others know as well, if any of what I have heard is right or a bunch of bs.

  3. I get my coffee from Hillkoff just north of the northern gate of the mote. Here is their website not sure it will be much help as it is all in Thai http://www.hillkoff.com/coffee_bean.php but you can use this site to translate it if you are really serious about looking for some coffee http://www.thai2english.com/

I typically pay 280Bt per/kg for the Hillkoff brand. There are other brands they sell in the Hillkoff store that are more but I think the Hillkoff brand is the best that they sell. The cost does change some. I know it has gone up a few times over the past five years that I have bought from them and others will go in and say it is more. You just need to make sure you have them fill out a member card for you and I think it discounts it some or at least it locks the price in for you.

They also sell all kinds of coffee makers form drip for 1,000Bt all the way up to the 100,000Bt+ espresso machines for coffee shops.

Oh and they do have a couple of staff that are okay in English, that you can a least get the right coffee in bean or ground to what you want it.

You will also find the Hillkoff brand at a few stores in town but if you go to the Hillkoff ship it is cheeper.

    Hope that helps.

  4. Acts Co is good but expensive as well as to far out of town. I have used a place in the back of Central (Kad Suan Kaew). It is on the floor just under the big sports store. They print everything from business cards to large signs and quickly with great quality and average cost. The guy there actually knows a bit about design and was able to help set the design to the correct size.

  5. I recently saw this comment on CM forum

If you have a Mac (as I do) you are in the wrong town unhappily. :realangry:

I would like to get more information

I will retire in June in Chiang Mai and since I have been using Mac for 15 years, I would like to know if there is a reliable company to take care of my Mac computers

Is it better for me to buy in Europe before settling here or can I get good stuff at normal prices there?

    Thanks for any information

No its not as bad as that. Go to www.applechiangmai.com

You can download a price list.

They have a main store west of Central shopping center and another smaller outlet at Robinson airport mall. They can get most anything and perform service and process Applecare warranty issues. Recently their prices have come down a bit and much closer to BKK prices than previously. Still it will never be as low as price as the states but its okay now.

It might however be cheaper to buy in Thailand than some Euro countries. I definitely think its cheaper than buying in the UK.

Most anything that has to be done under Applecare has to be sent to Singapore. I just had my battery replaced under Applecare and the shop here made me pay to send the battery off to Singapore (600Bt about 14Euro). The positive they got me a new battery in three working days.

  6. Does anyone know the law on foreigners subleasing a house by the month on a non-immigrant ‘O’ visa? Can a foreigner with the same visa make a house they are renting in a residential neighborhood into a ‘guesthouse’?

I have looked on the web in a few places but can’t really find anything. I am looking for what the Thai law really says about this and not just opinions of is it legal or not.

  7. Funny, yet every Chinese holiday Thailand rings to the sound of fire crackers from dusk till dawn. I thought Mr T had gone, obviously not taken his Chinese influences with him.. Lets see if the same rules apply to the next Chinese holiday.

is this any different then past years? every year there is a ban on firecrackers and every year they are available in the market (if you know witch market where to look). they will still be on the street and available and annoying <_<

  8. The Myanmar Immigration office has increased the entry fee from $5US or 250Bt to $10US or 500Bt on the first of September. They have added computers in the office so I am sure that is where the cost is going. You have to sit down at a computer now and they have a web cam on the computer that takes a photos of you. They then print a form that goes with your passport that has your photo and give you the other half if you are going into the market to shop. The photo is not clear at all; they have the computers facing the door and it is getting light from outside. In the end it takes longer to get though the Myanmar Immigration.

  9. X-Ray machines? What x-ray? I was just there on the 15th of June and there were none that i saw... It was a normal trip across quick and easy as normal.

Well there is a super sized one there now :D Take a look at the Chiangmai Mae Sai latest info thread.

Are they letting you bring back DVDs now or not? Are they using these machines to look for drugs? Can they really stop people from buying DVDs with this machine?

  10. Hey all,

Have any of you been to Mae Sai recently to do your visa runs?

If so have you had any good or bad experiences with the newly installed x-ray machine?

    Cheers

    Ash

  11. More popular in Thailand are the O2 Mini and the HP iPaq. The fashion now is to have as few buttons as possible on the outside of the box. and both of these models use virtual keyboards rather than the older Blackberry technology (hard keys). I have an O2 mini and like it. One big advantage to virtual keyboards is that you can set them up for any language font, thus I can switch back and forth between Thai and English. There's also the option of using handwriting recognition, which works quite well on the O2.

I bought mine at Zoom on the 3rd (or 4th? not sure) floor of Airport Plaza, around THB28K.

But do these units will not work with a Mac computer, right?

  12. The third floors at Central as well as Airport Plaza are the tech floors and you will find a bunch of cell phones. But what I have found is that Airport is better price wise but only by maybe 500Bt or so on high end cell phones that are going for over 10,000Bt. The price difference you will find is going from one shop to the next asking about a phone or two when the venders see you walking some will drop their price a bit. What I have seen between BKK and CM is the price is about the same maybe 500Bt difference here and there again.

As for second hand, phones I have had a few friends that have bought second hand phones and they really suck. The shop did not clean them or do anything to make them a good phone again. And knowing how my phone is used and handled I would never want to buy a second hand phone. There are many inexpensive, very reliable, phones on the market, which you can buy new.

  13. A friend of mine just flew out of ChiangMai a few days a go and called the Airport taxi service and they sent a car to his place to pick him up and take him to the airport for 150Bt. Maybe that is a better way to go then leaving your bike at the airport. What is 300 in taxi cost (there and back) when you know your bike is not left in a public place. Not sure, of the number for the taxi service but it might be in one of the travel magazines

  14. Does anyone know about this year’s food festivals for ChiangMai?  There is normally one on the canal road in November sometime and another close to Airport Plaza in November or December.  Information on dates and/or websites with information would be much appreciated.

I found out from a Thai friend that the festival at canal is from the 1-7 of November. In the past, they have had a lot of good food and entertainment.

  16. We had a thread running on this topic a while back. Might want to try a search as I recall there was some useful information in that thread, including the actual tax rates.

Do you know how long ago this was or where that form is? I have searched for it and cannot find it.
