  1. Hello,

I'm a Norwegian staying in Thailand on a Non-O marriage visa (married to a Thai).

I'm currently planning what it takes (practicalities and financial requirements) to form a company in Bangkok to hire 4-8 (possibly more on need) Thai software developers

and sell consulting services to Norwegian customers. I have a partner in Norway which will handle Norwegian side of business. In essence the Thai company will be outsourced development office for the Norwegian side consulting firm. I'm to be the manager/techincal project manager for this company so will need a work permit.

Since finding the right staff is critical for this kind of business we need to be able to hire people on a trial basis, so I'm considering using a recruitment agency

like Adecco to find talent on a try-and-hire basis in the beginning.

Would staff hired through an agency, or hired independent contractors, count towards the requirements for a work permit?

What would typical startup costs be with regards to company formation (how much of the registered capital must be paid up-front), office space rental, and recruitment be?

What other company/employee costs would there typically be, besides office rent and employee salaries?

What timeframe is normal for complete company formation?

    Thankful for help/advice

  3. I'm working for a European IT company that is investigating setting up a small software development "office" in Thailand, hiring Thai developers. The plan is not set up a separate business here, but mainly to offshore internal development work here instead of hiring more (expensive) developers in the home office. There would be need for fair amount of technical communication in English between home office and Thai office.

I've already read some of the forum threads discussing the challenges of recruiting Thai staff/software developers here, but I'm wondering if anyone has used local help in getting setup successfully? Like a company specializing in offshore formation, or a recruitment agency. Any recommended agents?

I'd be very grateful for thoughts on what people think were the key factors that contributed to the success of their "offshore" development office here in Thailand?

  4. I've got some bad experience with ThaiVisa Insurance, so be warned. Had a so called first class car insurance with AXA for 1 year old Honda Civic, but when we had an small accident, we were informed that we can't do the repairs with the Honda mechanic!!! No prior warning/advice from the broker, they were just interested in a quick sale. I'm just happy the car wasn't seriously damaged. But even so now we have to worry about finding a trustworthy mechanic. Anyone know any?

The Honda people felt sorry for us when they saw what we premium we paid. I feel scammed.

  5. Hi,

I'm a foreigner, considering to buy a small condo in a new project in Bangkok (price range 2 - 2.5 million baht). The project is still in pre-sale phase, but I'm wondering if it's normal by developers to have an "approval process" for potential buyers? Do they need to see proof of funds or financing, before I make down payment (10-20%)? When I visited the sales office, they seemed very eager to close a sale same day with free gifts, buy that wouldn't leave much time me to arrange things.

I'm especially wondering if the developer need to see proof of 100% funding before I "sign", and make the initial down payment of 10-20%. Or is it normal for developer to just "trust" the buyer to come up with the remaining 80-90% at transfer/closing date?

  6. I'm currently taking one-on-one thai lessons at Somchart Language School (http://www.somchart.com/), and is progressing well. I have found the teachers there friendly and flexible regarding schedules. For me face to face lessons works best as it gives me the most "talk time", and I have the opportunity to digress off-topic if something special is on my mind.

The school is located in Sukhumvit soi 11, 100 m from BTS Nana.

    Can recommend the school.

  7. Hi forum

I just wanted to know if anyone know a place where one can see all (most) of the Thai mutual funds you can buy in Thailand with a description where and what they invest in.

    MK

I'd be interested in this as well. I'm trying to convince my GF that she should start putting some of her money in mutual funds.

  8. Hi,

Looking for a furnished apartment/condo with ADSL close to Karon or in Phuket Town for me and my GF. Can be studio, 1-bedroom, etc. My GF has an internship at Phuket Hilton so it'd be nice with something not too far away. Need car-parking, preferably with security.

Would like to keep monthly expenses below 15000 in total (including ADSL and electricity).

Thanks in advance for any tips/offers.

  9. Have asked around in several shops here in northern Bangkok and been quoted [or, the wife has, to avoid farang-price and BS] prices between 13K and 19K, but no shops seems to acctually have them.

I fear they all rely on side form of import-middle man from some of the other markets (Japan or US), since Thailand (or SEA at all) isn't mentioned by Nintendo in any release-statements, only US, Europe, AUS and Japan...

So...to cut it short: Any reliable shops have these small wonders in stock, to what price, and from what region?

Will try to travel down to the IT-market (Pantip) and hunt around, but with it's multitude of stores and floors it takers a full day and with a newborn I don't seem to get that much time off...

Try MBK 6th floor, seems to be a couple of shops that deals in Wii (Japanese imports)
