  1. I have been taking microgynon since I moved to Thailand a year ago, but I am unhappy with some of the side effects (specifically, reduced libido). I am on hormonal birth control primarily for dysmenorrhea, but I also use it for contraception. Any suggestions on a similar pill to microgynon that might have different side effects?

I have also been thinking of trying the mirena IUD. Does anyone know if/where it can be inserted in Bangkok?

  2. Hello! I am currently in the process of switching jobs and need some advice. On June 5 my current employer will be cancelling my 1-year business visa at Chaeng Wattana, and they say I need to go with them and bring my passport. For various reasons I'm not able to do a direct transfer of my work permit from my previous employer to my new employer, so my new employer will help me get a new work permit and new visa on June 10/11. My new employer has asked me to get a 7-day extension of my business visa so that I can remain in the country while they begin the process of getting me a new work permit and business visa. They say that I should get this extension while I am at Chaeng Wattana and that my current employer can help me, but I don't really trust my current employer to know what to do. So, does anyone know the process, cost, etc for getting a 7-day extension on the same day that my 1-year visa is cancelled? Many thanks!

  3. Aw, crap. When I first got on BC at age 16 due to period pains they said it wasn't endometriosis...but after reading up on it because of your post I think it might be :( Does anyone have any suggestions for a doctor to see? I usually go to St. Louis hospital because it's very close to my house, but honestly I don't think going to a Catholic hospital for reproductive health is my best option. I have seen Bumrungrad recommended a lot, but they're so expensive...

  4. Like bjordt I was on LoOvral 30mcg Ethinylestradiol/300mcg Norgestrel. I haven't been able to find that exact formula in Thailand, so I've been trying Microgynon 30mcg Ethinylestradiol/150mcg Levonorgestrel. It was fine during my first month, but for the past two months I have had TERRIBLE bowel and uterine pains during the two days before and first day of my period. I've got to stay on hormonal BC because I have terrible dysmenorrhea. I really loved the NuvaRing when I was on it for a few years, but I'd rather avoid paying for an OB/GYN visit plus whatever exorbitant amount they charge for it here. Any suggestions for other BC brands I might try?

  5. Hello! My husband (US citizen/23 yrs old) entered Thailand on a 90-day, single-entry Type O visa to take a CELTA course. He's now got a job, and his employer is supposed to be taking care of his Work Permit/Visa but apparently won't be able to get it done in time. They say that my husband needs to leave the country, go to a Thai embassy, and get a 60 day tourist visa before they can switch his visa to a Type B. I have never heard of this requirement (visiting an embassy) before. I asked if he can't just do the regular 30-day run, but apparently they STILL won't have his work permit ready by the time his visa will be up again. He has to do this run before Dec 30th, so we're on a time crunch, and his work is being un-helpful.

So, I have a few questions:

    1. Where should he go (Laos, Cambodia, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Malaysia...)?

    2. How much will the visa cost?

    3. Does he need to make an appointment with the Thai embassy, or can he just show up?

    4. Does this seem weird to you, and do you think he can just get away with doing two 30-day extensions?

    5. If he can get away with 30-day extensions, can he do those via land or must he fly?

Stressing out because we didn't expect this expense! Argh!
