  1. Hi Peter - a very exciting idea. Wish you all success. I wonder if you have read the books on Thai river journeys written by two other adventurous souls: Steve van Beek, "Slithering South", 1988 (paddled a wooden boat from source of Chao Phrya River all the way down its mouth); and Patrick Lemmon, "A River Less Travelled", 2012 (sailed home made boat down part of Ping River).

Can contact Steve or his Thai wife Piyawee:

    Best of luck!

    thanks for the info

if you do NON-O in laos... they dont ask any letter from wife. and also you can pay in baht

the rest of your docs are as same in laos too.

    thanks

For me going to Savannakhet is much less hassle and cheaper. I might try HCMC next year, only because my Thai wife is interested to go there.

Yes Vietnam is more interesting than Laos. But you have to pay more obviously.

Those are certainly the busy days. That is the days that visa run vans are arriving.

That is due to all the people that applied on Monday were picking theirs up.

Go on Tuesday to apply and the pickup time on Wednesday will not be busy.

Apply Wednesday and there may be crowd left over from the morning on Thursday afternoon that disrupts the pickup side of things.

Am back in Thailand from Savannakhet today (Fri. June 28). Submitted my paperwork (non-O multi, [Thai wife]) Wednesday morning at 09:00. Got to Consulate about 08:00 and was no. 7 in queue. There were only 30 people in total so Wednesday seemed OK. But, as ubonjoe says, the Thursday mob (mostly teachers it seemed) were still inside submitting their paperwork up to 14:30 !  We 30-odd weren't allowed in to collect our passports until about 14:45. That made it tight timing for some who were catching buses from Mukdahan bus station that afternoon. So it would seem that submit on Tuesday and collect on Wednesday is best - but I was told that Tuesdays are also getting busier now !

Have a feeling they'll also adopt the online reservation system eventually (as per Vientiane) - the limited Consulate staff are finding it hard to cope.

  4. Hi Klong Song ... it's the Tree Bark Caterpillar (also known as Bark Eating Caterpillar). Am impressed you could get a photo of it in daytime as it's nocturnal and remains within its tunnel/burrow under tree bark by day normally.

    https://www.thehindu.com/sci-tech/control-of-bark-eating-caterpillars-in-fruit-trees/article6549355.ece

It's a pest of a wide range of tree crops. We have the devils under bark of our big flowering Magnolia (dok champaa) tree. Most references suggest treatment with (toxic) chemicals. Your local farm/garden shop will have a choice of organic insecticides but am not sure how effective they'll be.  You could try the home-made concoctions described in posts #2 and #3 above.  The difficulty is getting to the larvae (caterpillars) inside their tunnels under the bark.  Spray-washing the trunk around the entry holes will help, but best to also squirt the pesticide inside each tunnel if possible.  We haven't tried to control them as it's only one tree and the devils have now moved up too high to reach easily.

    Good luck ????

  5. Hi djeetyet - I'm in Ban Chang, Rayong Prov. I bought ROOT-FRO liquid rooting hormone 100ml, IBA 1.5% (in a red, yellow and green box, don't remember exact cost but was around Baht 150). Found it in a farm/garden supply shop in the main shopping street. They had other brands in stock too. So rather than visiting nurseries, you might have more luck in shops in Chan town around the market area.

Again heavily skewed towards cost rather than quality of care.

Edit: Just noticed that Germany is well down the list. You've got to be joking, probably the best healthcare in the world.

No. Switzerland is best. German doctors migrated there.

Doctors in Thailand run the full gamut from world class experts in their field to thoroughly incompetent or negligent and everything possible in between.

And, news flash, this is also true in most countries. The only exceptions being some very undeveloped places that have no world class docs. There is not a country in the world that doesn't have some bad ones.

If you are accustomed back home to being treated through a government health care system, care there is probably safeguarded by pretty comprehensive treatment protocols doctors are are require to adhere to.  There is something similiar in Thai government hospitals but in Thai private hospitals there are no standard protocols and doctors -- who are independent contractors, not hospital employees - are free to do as they see fit. If you happen to have a really good and conscientious doctor there can be advantages to this (standard protocols reflect not only medical evidence but also  cost considerations and other institutional factors so will not always be in an individual  patient's best interests) but if not - it is risky.

You should never, never just show up at a private hospital and see whatever doctor the staff refer you to. Always research first and carefully select a doctor based on qualifications, most private hospitals have websites that facilitate this. You are also welcome to post here asking for doctor suggestions.

If you are not willing  or able to do that then you are better off sticking to Thai government hospitals  where at least there are protocols they have to follow -- but be sure to make it at least a provincial level, preferrably tertiary level, hospital and be prepared for long waits, red tape and language barriers.

BTW the treatment you received for your testicular pain was indeed not proper and if it is still present you need to see a good urologist.

    Excellent reply to a Newbie.

I think you raise an interesting point; what exactly do the Thai people think of the current rulers? And the current situation in their country?

Respectfully, there is a snowball's chance in hell that the Nation provides an accurate picture, nor do I believe that the "polls" that are published do either. Nor the 'newspaper that cannot be named'.

What is the true mindset of the Thai people? It is quite a feat for a video to achieve 100,000 'likes' in such a short time, especially considering the endless stories of people being arrested and charged for much less.

Is this a leading indicator of things to come?

Many people on the Forum, including myself at times, seem to think that the Junta is very secure and certainly going to plague the country for many years to come, but what if we are incorrect? What if there is a groundswell of opinion (which we as foreigners do not see and/or hear) building?

What is the true sense of the Thai people?

    Hmm...

    Double hmm...

Something to ponder this Saturday morning...

Good questions. Have just discussed this over beers with my elderly Thai mates at my Mom & Pop elite meeting place. They are a bit surprised and confused. In one way they respect the youth for their outrightness but abhor all the dirty slang, much of which they could't understand.  I got the feeling that it's a worrying trend. They don't outrightly support the ncpo, but like the "peace and order" status quo.

It seems to be assumed that for someone applying for an extension of stay based on retirement without the notarized affidavit of income from an embassy, documents in English proving a retirement income of 65,000 or more per month will no longer be accepted and that the retirement income will now need to be remitted to a bank in Thailand, not a bank in the home country.  Where is the evidence for this change in policy?

Thai Immigration are in committee about all that. Wait for an official announcement from them. Speculation by we expats  is useless. Just enjoy your Saturday night !

Don't know. Maybe having invested too much of their liquid assets in "real-estate" in Thailand. Depending on location, hard to turn into cash.

Or they have spent their money on " Wine, Women and Song" upon arrival in Thailand. The rest, they have just squandered.:clap2:

    Cheers.

Accurate analysis. The dream is over for some. I have a bridge they can sleep under (not free).

Not everybody is from Swiss which got rich from hidden (illegal) bankaccounts to avoid tax...

For me it's the fact that i don't trust thai banks so i won't put 800k on it...

Also don't forget that some folks have to pay very high tax because their government thinks is necessary to give loads of money to poor countries.....

Please explain when you were screwed by Thai banks and how. I'm 18 years here and never experienced such (Bangkok Bank). Plus, their e-banking is very professional.

thats quite cool, you can see where in the UK people signed from

I've just signed in support (although pension income doesn't apply to me personally). But that map link shows just a few scattered locations across UK and none in Central England. Would have thought London would have been represented, but nothing yet. This effort needs a lot more publicity somehow. Good luck.

17th in the town and then 18th in the Phala Beach area according to a local yokel.

Tessabaan Officials told me 19th for Phala beach. Good sales from visiting Thais down there ... keep it going. Hoping to stretch the fun to include the coming weekend. Worried about impending thunderstorms but beach sales have been good from outside Thais (Bangkok car numberplate) this year.
