  1. If the photo in the op is in Pathum-Thani and it was taken yesterday. Surely you must sympathies with them. They have suffered enough. We live in Prawet district and are still dry. If getting our share of the water would help, I think we should get it.

    jb1

Let Prawet remain dry and undamged. What good is going to come of innundating another neighborhood? Then the people of Prawet will start protesting and the water will be released into On Nut. And so on. The situation in Pathum Thani is not good and obviously the people are suffering. But do not sacrifice more neighborhoods, causing more destruction and monetary loss - this is turning into mob rule, and that is never good.

Right. Just agree to give them adequate compensation for the sacrifice. If you stop abusing them, they will stop trying to break the barriers.

    Agree 100%.

  3. I'm on Pattanakahn 51, just off SriNakarin. Just looked off my balcony and can see the sois between Pattanakahn 51 and 53 are not flooding, but definetly getting wet from water coming up from the sewers. It's not deep at all, but the water is going down the sois at about a meter every 5 minutes - kind of like the blob of the 50's horror film. If it goes like this all night there will be build-up. None of the houses are sandbagged.

  4. And why is the ring master totally quiet? He claims to be the champion of the poor, who are by far the biggest losers out of this situation. Totally quiet*, maybe too busy counting his money from blood diamonds. (*A red shirt thug claimed the paymaster had ordered big pumps from Korea and they were supposedly due for delivery 4 or 5 days back. Nothing happened.)

And the brother in law (ex?) national police chief - where is he? Totally quite also? A national disaster obviously needs lots of resources, the army have mostly very quietly given lots of support, resources etc., and in the main well organized. The police should also be very up front, but where are they? Surely the BIL (ex) would be looking for an opportunity to show he's capable and not just a relative who gained from nepotism? But nothing!

And where's all the red shirts clowns who were appointed as ministerial advisors? Nothing!

The BIL may be holed up looking for newpapers & websites he will have sole say in censoring or even shutting down if that proposed law sneaks thru while all this is going on :bah: Of course based on the quality of work the rest of Yingluck's appointments have produced maybe its best he's on the downlow.

  5. "Nationwide 437 people have been killed in the disaster, though so far there have been no official reports of deaths in Bangkok."

Now, you Bangkokian must be happy to hear, and sleep better at night.

Can you give us a number of how many people have to be killed in Bangkok to make you happy and sleep better? Oh, and they have to be "rich elite" too, I'm guessing. Which will be tough because its the poor and working class here who are most at risk. As are their homes and possessions.

  6. ...

I am just curious whether downtown Bangkok be under water to prevent normal existence for a week, 2 weeks, a month? If it is a month, the discussion isn't worth having, but no one seems to have even the remotest accurate calculation.

When Yingluck was talking about opening the flood gates and flooding Bangkok to a metre a couple of weeks ago, she said that it would take a month for the flood waters to recede.

So that would mean it could be anything from a week to 3 months.

That is opening the gates, what also about intentionally breaking some of the water barriers, or would the damage be too catastrophic.(As though it could get any worse anyway) I am just curious as to whether there is a quicker way to get this dam_n water to the sea, prepare to protect the vital parts downtown as much as possible, open up absolutely every path to the sea, and get rid of it as quickly as possible.

There are some absolutely vital parts of Bangkok of course, but, if every non-essential person was moved out of the city, and it was intentionally flooded, there are also enormous amounts of residential areas very close and inside the downtown, unlike a lot of other large modern cities. These are areas that shouldn't necessarily be considered vital.

Would it speed up the whole process? From a month to two weeks or possibly less? I don't know, because there is no info. Much better surely to get people out of the area and get the water through than to let them slowly be engulfed.

This isn't some movie of the week. Evacuate every non-essential person out of Bangkok? How many people do think that might be - 6 million, 8 million? Any less than 3 or 4 million seems like it wouldn'tbe enough to make a difference. How do you get them out? Who decides who is "essential"? What if people don't want to leave thier homes, businesses - have you read about the robberies of evacuated properties? Where are they going to go? Right now its just about impossible to get a hotel in dry area. Oh, they can stay with relatives. Right. Or evacuation centers, like the ones that the government is doing such a great job with now? The reality is that flooding Bangkok will bring about a disaster beyond what people can imagine. Who thought it would be this bad so far? FROC has proved you can't control a flood. Uncomfortable and miserable and sad as the situation is, it will get much much worse if bangkok is flooded.

  7. Of course such an action would totally negate all the efforts of the Democrat controlled B.M.A. thus putting the Democrats in a bad light.

My money is on the fact that it is a politically motivated move aimed at discrediting Bangkoks Democrats.

Yingluck and the current administration are like cornered animals and will indeed take anyone and any thing they could down with them.

All the hallmarks of Yinglucks Big Brothers tactics all over again.

Amazing, such blind hatred and bitterness, to the point that you cannot consider any other possibility.

YEAH! Lay off her. She's rich, beautiful and has lovely white skin. What else do you want in a PM? GIve her a break.

  8. What's insane about being put in jail for passing counterfeit bank notes? And keeping you there if you're unable to post bail?

What's insane is that you believe everything you read in the papers.

I wasn't aware they had the results back. Actually, I wasn't aware they sent the notes for testing, I thought he was asked to pay for the notes to be sent for testing but I can't see where he actually did that.

    EXACTLY.

No one knows anything about what really happened.

Could just as easily have been counterfeit as not.

There is an FBI presence in Thailand. Why didn't or why hasn't the Thai police department involved the FBI if they are so sure the notes were counterfeit? Maybe, just maybe it's because there was no crime here, other than extortion on the part of the Thai lawyers and police?

  9. The point is, there aren't any facts. There is a one sided story, which most farangs want to believe. Until there are some facts reported and from other sources there isn't enough information to make any kind of judgement. But in the mean time everyone on here is bashing Thais and me for questioning his side of the story. Also that there are tourist here that do break the law...

    Uh oh, a tourist basher.

  10. The question is why presume he is guilty?

No, the question is "why presume he is innocent?"

Oh, let's see. A man on holiday with his family. He had been exchanging dollars from the same lot all over and never had a problem before. The BiB and Phuket vendors of all kinds are known to be corrupt cheating, lying thieves.

So yes, why presume he is innocent?

Another Thai basher. Now Thai Banks and Police are out to get honest tourists? Really... All tourist here are just wonderful. Here is one that wasn't: Beach Thief.

And this proves that this South African man in question is guilty? Or that the Thai police department isn't corrupt? Sorry, don't get your point.

  11. The question is why presume he is guilty?

  12. It's not a landslide. The exit-polls are inheritable flawed.

Exit polls are rarely wrong though. So now we have to question is the vote count being tampered with?

How could these exit polls be wrong? The ex told me when she and her sisters/granny voted today they were asked when leaving who they voted for by nice uni kids with clipboards, Standing next to the kids were "friends" of the folks who had handed out envelopes of cash a few minutes before, listening and watching what was written down. What were they going to say - they voted for the other party? She also said there were "helpers" who were showing people how to mark their ballots. rolleyes.gif

  13. With PTP 313, Dem's 152, all other parties seem to have been more than decimated. BJT, CPPP, CTP had 89 seats, but go down to less than 35? Ah well, maybe the quality of polls hasn't improved yet ;)

What's interesting about those numbers is, that BJT seems to have gotten decimated, because its charasmatic leader is under suspension and played no part in these elections. What's interesting about PTP is their leader is also under suspension but we see his influence in every media, both domestic and international. Now we're going to see what the Thai judiciary is made of.

You know very well what the Thai judiciary is made of. We've seen it before.

Not sure they can get away with it again though, with such a clear election result. But if they try (same applies to the military) then that'd be an excellent path to civil war.

How about RESPECTING THE ELECTION RESULTS, that everyone has been so full of. Anything else is worse, even if you don't like the result.

How about a banned politician/convicted bail jumper/fugitive funding and directing a political party? Or doesn't that count?

  14. Here are the campaign promises that I have heard so far from Pheu Thai:

    - 100 billion baht for villages and communities, debt moratorium, debt restructuring and credit cards for farmers.

    - One million tablet PCs for students

    - 20,000 baht/ton price subsidy for rice

    - minimum wage increase to 300 baht/day

    - 1,000 baht cash handout to the elderly

    - large extension of mass transit routes with ten new train lines in Bangkok and a 20 baht flat rate fare

    - energy credit cards for taxis, commuter vans and motorcycle taxis

    - reduce corporate income tax rates from the current 30% down to 20% by 2013

    - building a 20,000 rai city from reclaimed land on the Gulf of Thailand

Now all these proposals are certainly attractive for just about any Thai citizen. But the question I have to ask is: from what source will the revenue come from to pay for all this, including making up for the reduced corporate tax rates?

Can anyone point to a reference where Pheu Thai set out regarding how they would fund all these plans and even come close to balancing the budget equation? if the answer is massive sovereign debt, this could become far more dismal than Greece.

Most of their promises will forever be "being planned".

A few kids in a few selected schools might have their photos taken with cheap knockoff tablets.

The middle-men who control the rice trade so the farmers never get their fair share will get the subsidy price, it will never trickle down to the farmers. The middle-men will be required to hand back a good portion of their new-found profit.

Minimum wage will never be raised to 300 baht - workers will be told "coming soon, just wait". Yingluk will have her photo taken handing out a few 1,000 notes to a few selected little old folks, who will then have to hand it over to their headman when the cameras have left.

Mass transit extensions will be "planned". Some lucky land owners will probably get generous prices for future stations. Selection will depend on connections / loyalty.

Credit cards for taxis, vans, motorcycle taxis? what bank is going to issue those cards. "We tried" is what PTP will say. If the cards are somehow issued, you can bet the government will end up owning a whole lot of taxis, vans and motorcycles.

Corporate taxes will go down, but "donations" for projects will go up, those bakery boxes will have to get larger.

The new city will be called "Thaksintown" since it will be built on land bought from the family, of course at a fair price. laugh.gif

Picture say, Nigeria, or Panama under Noriega. What will those at the top care as long as they are getting theirs?

Maybe someone will come up with an idea for a new "privilage card" for wealthy tourists - it would be a sure hit!

  15. What about the old German submarines purchased by the current government? No money laundering there, surely..

Can you explain further because I cant see the link. Whereas with Thaksin I can clearly see the theft, the muirder, the corruption, the lying andc the cheating

Were you on the jury for Thakins trial? Or is that "hamg him on the rumor"

I still believe the surest way that the Dems can win the election, is by providing an amnesty/organising Thaksins sentence to a suspended sentence....and make him an "Advisor" to the newly elected Democrat Government. (basicly steal PTP prime trump card).

There is no disputing his business and organising expertise. He would be an asset to any Govt. but if he puts a foot wrong he is easliy grabbed and gets locked up again. An implanted electronic tag would .signal where he is at any point in time.

Expertise? I guess you weren't here for the Elite Card. Do a search and see how that turned out laugh.gif

  16. Jatuporn is in jail. The fact that he was given so much slack for so long, and the fact that he wasn't impeached speaks volumes about just how far "free speech" is tolerated in Thailand.

Freedom of speech isn't tolerated in Thailand that far. What surprises me is that some foreigners apparently relish the prospect of laws, themselves in need of updating, being abused and exploited for political purposes. The argument goes I suppose the law is the law, and must be respected. That's true but when a law is wicked and absurd, such as the example of South African apartheid, it is unseemly for foreigners to exult in its implementation.

I understand that since Thaksin has compared himself to Nelson Mandela you would want to bring up SA, so are Thaksin, jatuporn and the rest men of such conviction that they are willing to spend the next 27 years in prison to show the world they are right? Doesn't really sound like Jatuporn is, and Thaksin won't come home until his sister is PM. What a pitiful crew.

  17. Has she released her birth certificate? How about her college transcripts?

"Kentucky State University is the traditionally and predominantly Black University of Kentucky" (University's description). I only bring this up as I am impressed at Ms. Y's openness to cultural awareness and experience! I would not have expected that. She's got a little soul in her- you go girl!

(do i need to add the sarcasm smiley?)
