  1. Not sure I entirely agree!

Actually their domestic internet infrastructure is brilliant! I have never seen my domestic speeds drop lower then the capacity of my actual line.

You are right saying that the companies focus on their main market which are Thai people. I reckon 80% of the sites visited by Thais are domestic, and they have massive speeds accessing those domestic sites at very low prices. They have their own local p2p servers, everything...

True has 8Mbps for between 1000 and 2000 Baht/month (depends if you have any of True's other services like mobile phone or sat tv).

    TT&T launched a 10 Mbps service for 1490 Baht/month.

It's just when we are talking international connectivity. Thailand is unlucky in being globally bang on the other side of the place where 60% of the internet's content is hosted! Which for a start means that the actual price/investment for the physical lines is more expensive then anywhere else! Add to that low market demand. Almost 70 million Thais versus a couple of hundred thousand farangs makes it commercially very hard to invest in massive international connectivity.

IMO they did the right thing in keeping prices low for domestically fast services, and still offer service with better international speeds at a premium price.

And to be perfectly honest, I'm not sure why one needs a 6 or 8Mbps line.

VOIP works perfectly fine on my 3Mbps ADSL line, I can download over 1 GB/hour, so that's more then 30 regular movies a day, 6 HD movies (720p) or 3 full HD movies (1080p)

It would be fun yes, but I'm not losing any sleep over only having my paltry 3 Mbps (at 2200 something Baht/month)

Does your "international internet" connection slow down during the day? When you pay more for the international line do you usually get reliable high speed international internet? The reason I ask is I day trade stocks and will be moving to BKK in Sept. 3 Mbps is more than enough bandwidth for me.

Are all the people who complain about slow international internet on the cheap package?

    Thank you,

    Sean

  2. Kids playing "video games" with other people's money :)

That's exactly what the world needs right now...

    Just an analogy :D

With the internet more and more businesses are going to relocate to cheap labor countries. In the trading industry why pay a good trader 50-80% of profits when in Asia can pay 15-40%? In my opinion the Asian kid is going to work much harder to be successful.

Thanks again to everyone who provided productive advise. I believe the best place to open the business is in BKK. CM internet stability is not stable enough yet.

    Thank you,

    Sean

  3. Well, I think the discussion is getting out of hand. im following the "2 bottles a day" rule and I dont feel any negative effect at all. I even abstain from drinking when I have some serious business the next day.

But from the view of the members of AA, Im an alcoholic...I hv yet to determine who is rght. That point of view may be right or not, Im not sure.

So if one gets drunk once a week, whats the problem about this ?

Remember you are on an internet forum! Take the advice from the rude opinionated folk with a grain of salt! Your life is yours. I wish you all the happiness in the world. Happiness comes in many different forms for many different people.

Forget about being "clean living" as a goal. If "clean living" provides peace and happiness then go ahead and be clean. If your current lifestyle is bringing you peace and happiness keep it up!

  4. Go to Hong Kong, Singapore or KL and I'm sure you'd find plenty of bright student types with good english skills and sharp enough thpught processes to do what you want. Unfortunately the Thai education system is not renowned for producing prolific quantities of this type of person. The few that have had a top level education (one which challenged them and taught them to think and ask questions) have enough of daddy's money not to need to be sitting in front of a computer at 4 a.m. for a "small Salary".

The above is a generalization but you should get the idea its not going to be easy. Bangkok would probably be easier than Chiang Mai.

Singapore and Hong Kong are out of the question because expenses are higher than Chicago(USA). "Small Salary" with the ability to make 1,000 plus USD a month? Frankly, I would not want any young kids who did not want to be rich from commission check!

Day trading is not rocket science! It is closer to a video game! I do not need highly educated kids. I need kids who want to be rich!

I do agree that my best option is Bangkok. Hopefully in Bangkok I can steal some traders from some existing trading shops.

Thank you everyone for your replies!

  5. I am actually going to hire young Thai kids/students to trade the companies money. The trader would receive a small salary and then % of profits. I think there are enough college students in CM area to accommodate the business. The most important thing is having a reliable international internet connection.

This has got to be a joke. Anyone who knows anything about day trading knows that this is impossible.

Why would you say this? Please explain? This business model is working all over the world. Do you think it is impossible in CM or in Thailand in general?

Others comments about internet is something I was worried about. I know for sure that there are reliable international internet connections in Bangkok. Obviously a reliable connection does cost more money.

Does anyone have any experience in CM with a business international connection that is working well?

  6. 2. Office space. Also one or two prior threads in chiang mai forum on this issue, one of which I posted in.

I looked at all the options and ended up renting a small apartment in a new building (for use as an office only), this was far and away the cheapest option for me and worked well. Don't worry too much about people coming and going and a little bit of noise - it's Thailand :)

Do you have employees? Your neighbors do not mind the traffic?

  7. I'm gonna break the trend here and say to me it doesn't sound like you have much of a problem. You seem sensible and it doesn't sound like alchohol is interfering with your life. I think 5 beers however might be a little extreme to be drinking regularly. 2 or 3 i think is ok and if you are fully functioning on that amount the next morning, my advice is stop worrying so much. I've met too many fitness freaks who never touched a drop and fell down dead in their prime to believe there's any guarantee for any of us. Yes you may increase the odds of a longer life, but then you could get struck down by the number 93 tomorrow morning.

Take care of yourself of course, but don't waste too much of your life fretting about what might or might not happen. There are too many variables out of our control.

    Please listen to Rixalex

I am attaching a URL to some recent studies. If I told you there was a miracle food that would give you 30% better chance to live out everyday of your life and wake up the next morning would you take it? You know what the miracle food is?? 1-3 drinks of alcohol a day :D!!!!!

Before we all try to give each other advise lets all take a step back. The internet has given us all the ability to overstep are boundaries as friends. Remember what your mother and father taught you(hopefully) "Stay out of peoples business".

The only thing I will say is all of us should use the internet to educate ourselves and others. Many on this board have given their advise without backing up their opinion with scientific evidence. I have posted some URL links. Please do not listen to "DO GOODERS". If you ate popcorn everynight before you went to bed, and then did not eat popcorn one night you would probably have a difficult time falling asleep. Would we label you a popcornholic!!!

    Enjoy life!!

If that means no drinks. Don't drink!

If that means 2 drinks have 2 drinks!

If that means 2-3 drinks and then the occasional 5-10 drink laugh feast with friends Have fun

Remember most of the people who replied never ask you if you enjoyed your routine. Most "preachers" see alcohol as evil, and clean living as heavenly. These people never really cared about your well being. They wanted to "preach".

Remember whatever you decide to do enjoy yourself, and be good to yourself and others.

If you are still in Thailand when I come over in September I will buy you a drink!!!water, beer, or coca cola your choice(i will be drinking beer :))

  8. If you're planning to day trade on your own account then a decent size house with office space plus an internet connection as reliable as any can easily be found inside your budget. If, on the other hand you want to rent facilities and sell know how to other hopefuls then I'd say Bangkok is probably a better bet since you'll have access to far more customers.

    Thank you,

Office space must be separate from housing because in the proprietary trading environment a lot of employees come and go. I could not have that many strangers around my daughter.

    Thank you for your advise,

  9. Hello to everyone,

I currently live in USA. My wife is Thai. I am going to open a Stock Day trading firm in Chiang Mai or Bangkok. I have a couple questions regarding Chiang Mai.

My budget for broadband/office space is 1000 USD or LESS(Hopefully less). The following are the requirements for the broadband and office space.

    1) My "broadband/internet" connection must be reliable. I would need 4mb line or better. Must have reliable international broadband. With this amount of money can I get a reliable internet connection? I am under the impression that if I am willing to pay I could get a good connection. It would have to be reliable from 6pm - 3am because I would be working USA hours.

    2) I am looking to rent a shell office space that is approximately 200-400 square feet. The space would need the following.

a)office space that can be occupied from 6pm - 4am Chiang Mai time

b)in area that has good internet access

c)secure area that I do not have to worry about computer equipment being stolen

d)area where power does not go out that often

    e)power supply is grounded(3 prong)

f)does not have to be a pretty office

    g)that is cheap :):)

All opinions and advice are welcomed

If I am being unrealistic I would like to know before I pick Chiang Mai over Bangkok. Chiang Mai would be a better place for my daughter.

    Thank you,

    Sean Coakley

I would like to thank everyone who is kind enough to give me their honest opinion/advise

  10. Hello,

I am in talks to open a proprietary trading firm in Bangkok. The backer of this group is one of the largest proprietary day trading firms in the US. I have management experience and capital. The missing piece is someone who has a track record day trading stocks. The day trading experience would hopefully include scalping/high frequency trading. A profitable etrade account is not what I am looking for:) This is an excellant opportunity! I hope to partner with someone or several people soon! If you are interested please PM me and I will email you.

    Thank you,

    Sean
