  2. Some great things would be:

    • Restaurant reviews
    • Human interest stories
    • 'Farang' interpretation/translation of news events (purely subjective)
    • Reviews of interesting places in Thailand
    • Hotel/resort reviews/reports
    • Useful 'farang' product finds/locations (special sauces etc)

    But I'm just dreaming........ biggrin.png

    Suggestions much appreciated!

  3. Though I'm sure I'll get a deluge of smart a$$ answers for this... as an expat with or without business interests in Thailand, what kind of content would you want to see on an English-language TV show in Thailand. (a news, informative style show) From reading the forums, it seems initially that a non-partisan, non-biased show about the goings-on in Thailand would be of interest. (This is just a wish list, most ideas would be rejected by the powers that be I'm sure) Don't worry if they have zero chance of becoming true... like my previous example. Just doing a survey to an upcoming project and want opinions. If it ever comes to light, I want this show to have some benefit to all the expats living in Thailand.

  4. Pol General Phongsaphat Phongcharoen, head of the police centre handling security during the run-up to the July 3 election, said police now knew the whereabouts of Thongchai Khongprajak, a gunman on a 75-member blacklist, and had set a deadline for him to surrender in the next 24 hours.

"At the end of the deadline, he will face a massive manhunt and eventual capture," he said, adding that Thongchai's absence had not indicated his intent or plan to kill anyone or any candidate.

The police KNOW where a suspected criminal is but will give 24 hours for him to give himself up?! And why do you need a manhunt for someone when you know their whereabouts? Just like a game hide-and-seek! Wheeeeee! 1... 2... 3... 4... ... 24 hours! Alright, here I come!

  5. A study had also found that more than half of the juveniles committing crimes came from single-parent families.

Great statistics! Reminds me of the classic Dilbert "Did you know that 40% of sick leave is taken either on a Friday or Monday!?"

Utterly meaningless without further information, but useful in scaring the middle class readership.

Couldn't agree more. I love how statistics are thrown around to support an argument but usually lack any substance. The ubiquitous "study" is used entirely to much by the media and politicians. Unfortunately most people take them for face value...

"USA Today has come out with a new survey - apparently, three out of every four people make up 75% of the population."

    David Letterman

  6. Seems to be the government's reaction to anything that could allow people to share information. Blackberry services were also cut I heard. Nothing beats censoring all media channels to give the public that sense of well-being and trust in their elected officials. Though strangely enough, Hi5 is working...

  7. Which school and in which country?

The OP was talking about a school here in Thailand that will, in the future, have this 'colour sports day'.

In Thailand. The point is that the Nazi themed sports day, in Thailand, already happened several years ago, in Thailand. Once again, in Thailand, if there is any confusion. Search 'nazi school thailand' in google and you will see the pictures of it, which already happened, at a school in Thailand.

Which is why I'm curious as to where this information came from, and am thinking it's a rumor based upon an already happened event, rather than something that is actually going to happen again, in Thailand.

No, this will happen next month. How do I know? Because my sister was chosen to help iron on the swastikas onto the armbands. She came home with two full bags of patches and red arm bands. And the theme is not Germany... its just colors. Red, Blue, Yellow, etc. It was up to the students to decide on graphics (if any) would be added.

  8. The swaztika sign has something to do with buddhism,or so i thought. If the sign is harmless in Thailand then tourists will have to accept that they do not mean any harm.

Are you actualy saying they are celebrating natizm, cannot believe for sure

Indeed! The swastika is an ancient symbol for peace... but the reversed sign, in a white circle on a red background is unmistakable. And while they are not celebrating Nazism, its not an excuse for perpetuating a known evil.

  9. And in many cases, it's just indifference. The same indifference that folks in other countries might feel when they come across a Khmer Rouge or Imperial Japanese army symbol on eBay.

    :)

Sad but true. For all the advancement humans have made, we are still creatures of narrow vision.

  10. When it comes to cultural and historical differences between the East and the West, many foreigners in Thailand are challenged in their beliefs and sense of right and wrong. Indeed there are many aspects of life here in the Land of Smiles that westerners could learn from. But while I love my country, I cannot but feel saddened and angered over the ignorance and indifference to the crimes of the past, on a global scale, that Thais seem to eschew when it comes to WWII, the Holocaust, and Nazism.

Now I'm not talking about the one or two swastika t-shirts being sold along Silom road. My issue is with an educational institution that is supposedly teaching the minds of tomorrow. I found out today that a magnet school for this country's most prestigious university will feature a "color sport day" where over a hundred students will be wearing Nazi armbands like members of the SS... replete with an iron-on swastika. I imagine that today's youth view Nazi Germany in somewhat of a romantic light given the Hollywood exposure and little or no academic counterweight. But for teachers I hold no such understanding or forgiveness. The teachers at this school saw no problem with students building team spirit with a symbol that saw millions of people murdered. Compared with Thailand's population during WWII, half that number of Jews, Gypsies, and Poles were murdered. 1 out of every 2 Thais would be dead simply because of their ethnicity. That this horrible period in World history is not properly taught or respected I find abhorrent.

As is so often said, those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it. What a truly sad day that will be when it comes to this country. :)

  11. Soi 62, right off the expressway. The place is called Combat Zone and there are always people playing paintball and airsoft, even at night. The place has fields for both. There is also another field off of Petchaburi but I can't remember the exact location. If you just go I'm sure you can get a pickup game and then get in with the regulars. Oh, you don't need to own gear. They can supply everything if you need a gun, ammo, or body gear. You may even bump into a few of the expat regulars there on the weekends...

If anyone else is interested, count me in for some regular play...

I could round up a small gang of 5-6 to play on the weekend. I search around for the website of this place, anyone know if they have information as to location, cost, rules, etc?

Here's the website for those who can read Thai... http://www.combatsurvivalgame.com/index.php

You might notice the field owner also publishes a nice monthly magazine with the same name. Even comes with a DVD.

The cost is very reasonable. I think 400 Baht for gun rental all day. Extra for paintballs. It's very popular so I think you need to reserve some times...

  12. I know there is a Japanese school here in Bangkok... I just can't remember where. They have classes in one of the hotels. The teacher is Japanese. He teaches kendo and samurai sword techniques. Not much help with out a name though... sorry.

  14. In a soccer dominated country, finding people who know about American football let alone be able to throw one is a challenge I'm finding. Especially given that I don't live near any major expat enclave, where can I find some players for a weekend game of touch or flag in or around the Klong-toey area? I have the field to play (my university) but it ain't fun with just one...

  15. <deleted>?! We're talking about a Hollywood film, based on a fictional book, and some local Christians are worried that people's faith might be tested? It's called faith because of your belief in something that can't be proven by science... or a movie. Cutting out the last ten minutes of the film is assinine. If you don't like it, don't buy a ticket. How about having some faith that people are smart enough to know the difference between a Hollywood film and a religion. Or even better, use this media event as an opputunity to educate people about Christianity... instead of resorting to censorship, which historically speaking, has never worked. Just ask the Romans.

    ================================

Four major local Christian groups yesterday submitted a request to the Royal Thai Police asking that the controversial Hollywood movie "The Da Vinci Code" be banned from Thailand.

Maj-General Phanomsak Thangthong, chief of the registration division, said the request had been sent to a censorship subcommittee for immediate consideration. The movie, produced by Sony Pictures from Dan Brown's novel of the same title, is scheduled for screening in Thailand on Thursday.
