  1. I just wanna thank everyone there is a lot of useful information in the replies and I appreciate it greatly. just to let you know, I've received information from a couple of different law firms that apparently because I am a single parent with full custody, plus I have the amity treaty, I will probably be allowed to have two workers instead of four workers to sponsor a work permit. it's not 100% certain at this point but it's starting to look like that. once again thank you everyone for your valuable assistance.

  2. Thank you everyone for the informative replies. Still, only one respondent addressed the issue about a single expat parent raising a Thai child and what effect that might have (if any) on the number of workers who need to be employed to obtain a work permit. One respondent said I am ineligible - Quote - You are not allowed to work or hold a work permit when on a retirement extension, so it would seem your question is moot. Sorry. -

Obviously I plan on changing my Visa first - Sorry Charlie ????

So, if anyone has any further information it would be greatly appreciated. It seems most lawyers are unaware of many of the points that were raised in this discussion. A disturbing, but significant fact.

  3. Hope I'm posting this in the right place. A call to anyone with deep knowledge of the Thailand legal code. I need information about obtaining a work permit under a special exception within Thailand legal regulations. According to information I obtained it is possible to use two workers, not the usual four, to obtain a work permit. The exception has to do with a single parent raising a child in Thailand. I am an American citizen on a retirement visa in Thailand. I have sole custody of my child who was born in Thailand and maintains dual citizenship status. I believe under Thailand law there is an exception in that I am I am allowed only two workers not four workers to provide myself with a work permit under my Thailand Amity company. I need specific legal advice in this area to determine if this is in fact true, and whether I will be able to benefit from said exception. If you can assist me please let me know Thank you.

  4. Does anyone have any experience transporting household items such as furniture air conditioners etc by train in Thailand? I imagine this would fall under the heading of freight or cargo transport by rail. I plan on moving from Chiang Mai to Phuket later this year. If anyone has any experience in this area, especially price information, I would greatly appreciate a response. Thank you

  5. Unconscionably immoral corporate rapaciousness ( yes in my fury I'm desperately grasping for superlatives.....). Seems the basTURDs at AIS are attempting to turn civil infractions into criminal ones, the responsibility lies with the (humourously called) Authorities and their collusion with the Tokyo money boys, setting up a system where transgression is inevitable and then slapping everyday joe and jane with the bill...simply odious...

  6. PS Thank you for all the advice everyone I am new to posting - I will avoid going off topic in the future. Just seems to me Wine and Beef go together so well :-) - And yes the Taxes are too high and yes the system sucks in some ways; however we are here and living beautiful lives. There is always a trade off in any arrangement. Thank God I can import most luxury goods online now... hurrah for Ebay. Sad to say wine is rather heavy and the shipping kills the equation

  7. Hi Donald Thank you for the education I really do appreciate it. I do not claim to be a Beef expert. However I am a food expert and despite what you say the KU and Northern beef products do taste better then the pure Brahman's i've had. Why would that be? Can you please give me more information about Pure Beef, where they get their supply from. How can I contact them? Much appreciated.

  8. Footnote; I visited the Rimping Airport branch of the Wine Connection today (Avoid the WC store at the new Central mall on the Super Highway as prices are inflated...rental space?), they were in the process of unloading a rather sizable shipment, shelves looked well stocked and prices were (EUPHENISM ALERT!) NORMAL... (based on memory from my last visit in middle 2013). According to the manager the last tax increase was in Oct 2013 and he was not aware of any 'market shortage'. He said they import directly and do not buy from any of the wholesalers in Thailand. Now this GLARING difference might tie in with what ticketmaster was saying about a cartel. Perhaps WC is not in the same ecconomic bed as the cartel.

PS: Thai cattle are not %100 Brahman, they are a hybrid of Brahmin and French Charolai (most at least). Once had a nice long conversation with the director of Northern Farms here in CM. He told me the cross breed was neccessary due to climate, pathogens et al. Also I have done group taste tests (large scale BBQ'S) pitting the best available Australian cuts against Northern's and Northern won hands down repeatedly. Everyone agreed the Aussie cuts were more tender but far less flavorful. Go figga?

PS #2: I believe Chateau de Loie is owned by a Frechman and he does run the accompanying vineyard, so how does the law about no agricultural ownership impact on this? Perhaps his wife owns the acerage?

  9. Yes thanks for all the input - I would raise my glass; alas it is (P Townsend-like) "Empty" ;-))) I did my own research several years back and it seems that Viticulture has progressed exponentially in the past decade. Due to new fungus resistant hybrids it is possible to grow real world class wines here in the tropics. And YES the expertise for this resides primarily (though not exclusively) in the West or Australia. However I think the primeval Thai tax imposed on locally grown (an offshoot of selected interests and their never ending obsession with control and conquer business tactics) places equal tax burdens on locally grown as well as imported Wine Products (so much for stimulating local industry). I think the weakening of the Bhat is a factor but that cannot explain the massive increase in price. Probably it is a perfect storm combination of retroactively applied new taxes, price gouging, and other arcane factors that favor certain individuals or groups. I am starting to have a hard time justifying my wine purchases to my wife. I used to say well; 'Hunny Perfume costs a lot more then wine'; but now that is getting increasingly difficult to say.
