A new regulation from the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) will allow street stalls on Khaosan Road to stay open from 4pm till midnight, Bangkok deputy governor Sakoltee Phattiyakul said after a meeting with related agencies yesterday.

The regulation will allow street stalls to operate on Rambutri, Chakrabongs, Krai Sri, Sip Sam Hang and Tani roads in Banglamphu area.

Over the next 10 days, Phra Nakhon district will also collect opinions from street vendors and building owners.

“Every vendor has to register with the Commerce Ministry. We will make it legal and transparent,” Sakoltee said.

“We are trying to find a middle ground for everyone. The street vendors can’t have everything. They can’t expect to use public footpaths all day long,” Sakoltee said, adding that vendors will only be allowed a space of 1.5 square metres and all stalls need to be of the same size.

“We will ensure that everybody gets an equal share of the footpath, and only one stall will be allowed per vendor,” Sakoltee explained.

Bangkok officials have previously claimed that some vendors own as many as seven stalls.

“The officials don’t understand the situation in Khaosan. Many vendors do their trade during the day. They should consider those making a living during the day time too,” Yada Pornoetrumpa, president of Khaosan Road Street Vendors Association, said.

“Ideally, I would want Khaosan Road to stay open 24 hours. They think vendors are greedy, but actually stalls help look after the street’s cleanliness,” Yada added.

At least the vendors cover the filthy broken pavements.

wow! remember when nothing seemed to affect Thailand's tourism? Much less the government copping to it?

Perhaps they should read today’s news also

“In yet another Thai boat incident thirty people were rescued from a sinking vessel traveling between Ban Phe and Koh Samet on Thursday evening.“

I thought the establishment of a company for the purchase of a  house and property was  illegal in the strictest sense.

Can you briefly explain  "A foreigner can be the principal share holder in a correctly established company which can own land."      Maybe the problem has simply been that many have done the process incorrectly.

    edit to add:

Are you referring to the  principal as meaning the majority shareholder?

You are correct- the use of Thai nominee shareholders for the purposes of land purchase is, of course, technically illegal but widely practiced. The concern is that this apparent ‘loophole’ could be abruptly closed without warning thus the principal (majority at 49% maximum) share holder (foreign) losing everything and possibly facing legal action to boot.

Outright ownership through a Thai or a leasehold registered in the land office would appear to be the safest way of having land.

It's against the law for foreigners to buy property in Thailand.

No need for any 'buyers checks', just don't do it.

Incorrect - you can buy as much property as you wish. What is against the law is for a foreigner to own land in his or her name.

That said. A foreigner can be the principal share holder in a correctly established company which can own land.

  5. You raise an interesting point and given the very recent 'tinkering' of tourist visas, one can only speculate about possible future changes.

One thing I have learned from living here is that there is always some Thai official ready to alter or amend a decent system, generally to the detriment of we foreigners.

Sure, there are many sanctimonious so called 'experts' on here that will either berate or rubbish your thoughts but I believe that as foreigners we should never take anything for granted. Experience shows that officials here are never happier than when diluting the enjoyment if living here in our senior years.

  6. Amazing that there are so many so called 'experts' on this site that seem to know what happened. There is even one who says he was in prison and treated with respect so this unfortunates story is therefore false.

So many sanctimonious 'sofa sitters' that voice their expert opinions - perhaps it is they that should be beaten up by Thai guards rather than a person with diminished mentality.

  7. Ever looked at the so called Thai driving test? Its a complete joke.

Absolutely no point in road safety campaigns when any half wit can get a driving licence and drive on the highway. Add an over abundance of very thick, stupid and fueled up people that have no consideration for others and you have a formula for carnage - just look at the facts.
