  1. Thanks for all the info folks. To clear some things up, yes she is the mother, my son is 15 months old and she lives in Chaiyaphum although equally close to Korat. She has done a bit of research and has told me I need to go to the Thai embassy in Beijing (I'm actually closer to Bangkok, I think) and get some form which I must sign and have stamped and send it back to Thailand. I'm going to assume that they are assuming we are married. Would this make it more complicated with my being here? I was under the assumption that it would be a (relatively) straight forward procedure if my girlfriend did it herself (I do realise that not many things in Thailand are straight forward).

  2. I am currently working in China and wish for my Thai girlfriend and son to join me. We need to get my son a passport and we are going to do his Thai one first and get his British passport in February.

What I would like to know is how to apply for this and do I need to be there in person or would my girlfriend be able to do this on her own at her local amphur office?

  3. Hi everyone.

I'm currently in Thailand on a tourist visa, visiting my girlfriend and son. I am due to get my extension on Friday. I have been told that if I bring my son's birth certificate and girlfriends tabien ban, I can get a 60 day extension as opposed to a 30 day one.

If this is possible, do they have to accompany me or would these 2 documents be enough?

Thanks in advance for your answers.

  4. Yes can take quite a long time particularly if they need additional information,,,my son's was recently approved and Liverpool received the additional information 4 months before they approved it.....i was asked to provide family photo's and i understand some are asked for DNA tests...

    Cheers..,,

DNA tests? I have a photo of me as a 2 month old and my son as a 2 month old and we could be the same baby, would that be enough?

  5. I applied for a Passport for my Son a year ago (English Father, Thai Mother - Married) - It took 3 weeks.

You will need a Birth Certificate (the full version, apparently people were also issued a half page copy which is not sufficient).

You will need a colour photocopy of each page of your passport.

You will need a colour photocopy of each page of your Wifes Passport (Or, Colour Photocopy of your Wifes ID card + the actual card which will be immediately returned)

The application form will need the signature of someone respectable (i.e. Dr. / Lawyer etc) who has known you for more than 2 years and can swear that a passport photo is a true likeness of your son.

You will need 2 colour photos which your signatory (respectable Dr. / Lawyer etc) must sign the back (also stating a true likeness)

Certified English translation of your Thai Birth Certificate

    Signed and completed Application form

Sounds pretty straightforward and simple. When you say each page of your passport, do you mean every page or every page with stamps on it?

I'll make sure to apply for a full birth certificate when I do.

You have made this seem like a very simple process and I really hope it is that way and I hope not being married doesn't pose too much of a problem.

  6. Did this many years ago (albeit within Thailand before passports started to be issued from outside) and it made it tougher that we were not married before the birth as nationality is not automatically passed from the father for kids born outside UK to foreign mother, according to UK law. You will also need to get your birth cert sorted. A copy can be issued through your local (Scotland) registrar though don't know if you need to be present.

Thanks daveAustin. I have just been looking into obtaining a new birth certificate and it appears I can do it by post. What did you do to overcome the problem of nationality not being passed automatically from father to child? Should I register the birth with the British embassy in Bangkok first?

  7. Hi all. I am in the process of applying for my son's British passport here in Thailand. I have been on the UKgov website and now know I need to submit the application in person, in Bangkok.

I'm looking to hear from anyone who has been through this process before and if it's easy or made very complicated by Thai procedures.

My son is 7 months old, my girlfriend and I are not married and my father in Scotland can't find my birth certificate. Will any of this delay the process?

    Any advice?

    Thanks in advance.

Qualified English teachers??? Because a bachelors degree in zoology or computer science makes you a qualified English teacher....... What a joke.

If you have a TELF certificate, you are already a more qualified English teacher than some one with a degree in, say, astro-physics.

Not in my view if you also hold a teaching qualification and a TEFL qualification in addition to your astro-physics or other science degree.

I actually did my BSc in Zoology in the UK many years ago (I loved David Attenborough's TV programmes)!  Then a PGCE (UK), then an MA in Science Education (UK) , then a one year part-time Advanced Certificate in TEFL at a leading established UK uni which was a brilliant conversion course designed for qualified teachers in other disciplines.   This very well thought through course included an assessed teaching placement in Spain, so it wasn't just theory, and included Teaching English for Specific Purposes too.   Teaching ESP (English for Specific Purposes) is big in the Middle East for example, and if you hold numerate/science degrees AND a teaching and TEFL qualification then you're always going to be in great demand, especially with the defence and oil businesses.

Yes, I do agree that having all of that qualifies you more as a teacher than a TEFL certificate but, my point was, a degree in zoology alone wouldn't make you a more qualified than having a 1 month advanced TEFL certificate.

Doesn't really matter now as apparently they are looking for people with degrees in education, which simply isn't going to happen. People won't want to work for 30k a month when they can be teaching at international schools or in Singapore, Dubai or Hong Kong. It'll mess this country's English programme right up, but, will they care??

You are right though......... David Attenborough's shows are excellent.

Hmmmm......... a few months ago I was on the BTS and trapped listening to (I had no choice as there were talking above everyone else) a group of Americans bragging about how easy it was to teach English in BKK and all the stupid things their students said.....! Everyone of their ignorant, ill informed, grammatically incorrect sentences contained the word "like" between every few words, said with a whiney accent of course. No way would I let those TELF stars near an English language classroom.

I hardly think listening to people talking with their friends, of the same nationality, on the BTS is a good place to judge someone's ability as an English teacher.

Being from Scotland, in the classroom I sound nothing like I do when I am conversing with my fellow Scots. Speaking like this doesn't make me a bad teacher, it just means I am Scottish and i use a lot of slang words and deliberate grammar mistakes when I speak with other Scottish people, because it's the way we speak.

  10. I have stayed in Thailand for 1 and a half years on tourist visas in the past (an indefinite tourist) without working here. I am now on an education visa as I am studying Thai. My girlfriend is pregnant at the moment and I am worried about when my education visa runs out. I make enough money back home to support us but not to qualify for a non O visa. What can I do? I realize they won't have any sympathy for splitting up a young family and I am worried I am going to have to leave my wife and young child here. Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Why having a child if you can't even afford a visa to stay with your GF and child?

With so little money you obviously have to start working so you get some money. That's what all other people have to do

One moment she is the girlfriend, next she is the wife ???? If married - get a non-O based on marriage - simple.

if not - marry her smile.png

Like I said before, it's not about the money, it's having it in a Thai bank account as I don't work here........

Differentiation between married or not is easy -- you don't have a marriage certificate unless you are married and that's what you need for a non-O based on Marriage. Sounds like you are abusing the system anyway if you don't work here but have income from work abroad - presumably online? You've been getting away with it for long enough -- time to sort out your visa situation properly maybe ? wink.png

Abusing the system??? Earning money from something overseas and spending it in another country is abusing the system? Isn't that tourism!?!

To answer your assumption, no, I don't work online. I own a house in the UK which I rent out. Getting away with what? Am I breaking any laws? Last time I checked it was perfectly legal to rent out property you own or to choose to live in another country.

A fellow poster, who isn't being a smart arse ;-) has given me all the information I need. I'll be fine :-D

Well she is my แฟน or fan, which doesn't really differentiate between the 2. We are not married yet. That'll be sometime next year........ perhaps sooner so I can get the non O!

It wasn't exactly planned lol. As the working situation goes, I don't want to be working illegally here and as a foreigner, there are limited options such as teaching, from what I hear is also being clamped down on.

I make enough to support us all fairly comfortably however I don't want to be turned away from a border because I'm on my second tourist visa or whatever.

It's not that I have so little money. I make enough at home to support us comfortably, I just don't have it in a Thai bank account which I'm not even sure if it needs to be..........

Option 1) Well, you can MARRY your girlfriend then start doing the paperwork to take her and your child back to your home country.

You may have to move in with family back in your home country - but it can be done. Luckily - as you said, you make enough money back home while sitting here in Thailand. Chances are, there is additional public assistance in your home country to help you get your life together.

Option 2) Get MARRIED, then go back to your home country, save up enough for the non-O requirement (400k baht) then return. Might take up to a year and a couple months (depending on what you claim you already earn) - but staying with family will help minimize your spending while trying to save.

Additionally - taking a year away from your wife and kid might seem like forever - but military folks do this ALL THE TIME. It can be done.

    No he does not.

He can get a non-O visa just because he has a Thai kid. Getting married is not required.

He just needs the 400k OR can prove he has 40k per month income.

He can also get a an education visa.

If he is rich, he can get an Elite card.

    MANY options.

I am planning on getting married next year but my visa expires in April.

Is it possible to get back to back education visas from the same institute and I can continue my studies?

If I could prove i make 40,000 baht a month in an overseas account would this suffice?

I have heard it's 400k if you are married or 800k if you are not.

Not rich or so an elite card is out of the question....

    Thanks fellas.

  15. I am studying the Thai language in central Bangkok and am now on my third 90 day extension.

As ubonjoe quite rightly states, as long as your school obtains the required documents from the MOE, not only can you apply for 90 day extensions over a long period but you will not have to leave the country, subject of course if you travel to another country then you will require a single or multiple exit re-entry permit obtainable from immigration.

Studying Thai can be enjoyable and it is, but you have to commit to learning the language and not abuse the ED visa as I believe many have done in the past.

Good news about not having to leave the country. Visa runs are a pain in the a***. So as long as I am studying and can prove it I can get these extended for quite some time? What about a 1 year extension though as I believe that's what i will be getting?

  16. Are there any ways around this? Legally of course.

    Retirement

    Investment

    Thai Elite program

    Marriage

Nothing is impossible as long as you have fresh banknotes coming from abroad.

    Retirement visa isn't an option..... I'm 29.

I really don't want to invest in any business over here as I have seen far too many go pear shaped.

I have never heard of a Thai elite program. What is it?

Marriage might be the best option. Of course I have heard of that going pear shaped as well. I'll have to make sure most of my money stays over seas.

  17. Bigger schools has multiyear ED visa, even 10 years available. You can also study other languages or skills. Smaller schools are usually more limited, only 1-3 years. The immigration also tends to treat them harsher, like extra requirements all of sudden. It seems to partially depend how good connections the school has with the immigration.

It seems like this is a small school but with quite a few students so I am guessing they have to deal with immigration a lot. Even 3 years would be enough until I sort something out. By that time I will be fluent in Speaking, reading and writing.

  18. The Thai part of your post does not make much sense to me but then my Thai is limited.

If you are happy with what you have been told/understand just go for it !

    A 90 day report -----sounds good !

It's says Nakhon Ratchasima. :-D The ball is rolling and I' m gonna go for it. I have to think about what I will do after the year is up though. Can I study again? What would be my options for staying here long term? I have already done 5 tourist visas (on an old and new passport) and I am told you can get a red flag if you have too many. I have thought about teaching for something to do and to help my visa situation, trouble is I don't have a bachelors degree (which is a ridiculous request if you ask me as I know plenty of idiots with that sheet of paper) therefore cannot obtain a work permit. Are there any ways around this? Legally of course.

  19. Where are you "studying" ? .........If a language "school" the best that can be hoped for is a 3 month ED visa which will only be issued against comprehensive documentation and thereafter 3 month extensions of stay ------again issued with appropriate documentation from the school.

I am "studying" in นครรชาสีมา. I have taught myself the Thai alphabet and I need to learn how to speak it if I want to stay here. It is in a language school and I have been told the visa will last for one year and I have to go to immigration every 90 days for a report, much like the non B and O type visas. Like I said in my post the extension form has 365 days on it so if it was a 3 month extension, wouldn't it say 90? As for the documentation, I had a mountain of paperwork to fill in.
