I’ve been in Thailand about a decade now but earlier this week when I applied to renew my visa I had to be fingerprinted for the first time. Is this a new nationwide policy or has this always been a part of the application process that perhaps hadn’t made it to my off the beaten track province (Phrae)?

 
 

Controls on prices and wages were in part meant to protect corporate profits. With so many Germans in uniform and increased demand for Labour resulting from war production wages would have skyrocketed without them.

The Nazis also passed a special law returning the full ownership of the Krupp heavy industrial works to the family of the same name.

I have a minor correction to make. It seems they were ordinary district police.

 

What I was concerned about, given their dress, is that they might not be legit.

We just received a visit from the immigration police here at my home in rural Phrae province. There wasn’t a problem, they simply asked for a photo copy of my passport with visa and left. What has me wondering a little is that they were dressed in very casual civilian clothing. My wife dealt with them and didn’t ask them for ID but she seems certain they were the real deal.

 

Anyone else have a similar experience?

I recently visited Nan immigration to renew my visa, I’m married to a Thai woman. When I was there they advised me that I need to update the bankbook of the account holding my required 400,000 baht at least once a month for the 4 months preceding my renewal application. I hadn’t, so I had to get a letter from the bank with a statement regarding my account.

 

I don’t know if this rule was in place previously at other locations. I just thought I’d give everyone a heads up just in case.

Didn't the end of the article mention that the girl's 7 year old daughter was still under the father's care? I truly hope that isn't the case.

It seems incredible that that the authorities wouldn't immediately remove the girl from the house.

This is crap a fantasy, but to think that Americans are honest and dont have ulterior motives is crap too.

America is not that trustworthy plenty of proof for that. They look out for themselves and bully and push others around.

They are better as Russia and China but certainly not angels without ulterior motives in what they do.

Often the USA pushes smaller countries around. I can still remember how they kept complaining about our drug policies in the Netherlands not accepting them. Forcing us to change and so on. Was not their business but they pushed and bullied quite often. This was an internal affair, and now they are legalizing weed too in many states.

They have supported their fair share of dictators as long as they were not communist. They have sold weapons incited war ect ect. They cannot claim the high ground here. They invaded countries on evidence that has been fabricated (Irak) just because of oil. I can't say that countries like Sweden / Holland / Belgium ever did like that.

So they are just a bully, just like Russia and China.. just a bit better and id choose them over those others any time. However that does not make them good. just less bad. They can't compare to countries like Sweden Holland ect in honesty.

Europeans seem to have a short memory when it comes to their colonial periods. Belgium in particular was brutal in the administration of their African colonies. The brief period of Dutch colonialism in North America was characterized by the slaughter of native people.

Not saying America isn't without flaws, the invasion of Iraq was a terrible idea which cost the lives of tens of thousands of innocent people, just saying people in glass houses should think before throwing stones.

Does anyone know of anyplace in Chiang Mai that I could buy either Turkish delight and/or Cheeze Whiz?

My wife loves animals, and I mentioned to her that rats are good pets (I had them as a kid), so she asked if I could get her a couple.

Preferably not the creepily looking white ones with the red eyes.

Is it legal to have a pet rat in the LOS?

Does anyone know where in Thailand I can buy a pet rat? I live in the north so if there's a pet store in Chiang Mai someone could suggest I'd appreciate it.

Thailand isn't the first place I've worked, I've also worked in Korea, Taiwan and China and in each of these places, and probably the other Asian EFL/ESL markets, you experience the rules being constantly bent and sometimes even broken, as a result you begin to see it as SOP.

Regardless claffey is correct and I won't make the same mistake again.

I think when the semester is over, and my obligation to the school ends, I'll wish them the best and move on.

Just an update, I was given the final word monday. They rejected my offer to share the cost of the work permit 50/50. Their reason was that it was my responsibility since "I could use it to teach people in my home", I don't quite get that but there you go.

I forgot to mention that I have a valid non"O" visa, I'm married to a Thai.

Look basically I practically live next to this university. They haven't had a foreign teacher in years because the position is part time and they can't offer a salary that would attract anyone. I'm semi retired so the position is a good fit for me.

I know it seems like an insignificant amount of money but given the number of hours I work and the hourly rate the work permit fee is about a weeks pay, and I feel the school should foot the bill.

I'm not breaking any contract as I am employed on a per semester basis.

Alan I know its traditional for some people here to try as hard as possible to find fault with their fellow teachers but read my post first, do you really think I'd be working part time at a rural university for 300 baht an hour if I were in it for the money?

I teach part-time at a university campus in the rural north. The salary is meager but the campus is located near where I live with my wife and the position is just what I want right now.

Last year I didn't get a work permit, I know I should have but I didn't, this year with the more strict enforcement of the rules that we have seen since the coup I thought I'd better get one.

I approached the head of my department and asked the school to provide me with the paperwork to apply for a work permit, additionally I also mentioned that I believed the school should pay the fee for the permit.

I was told that while they would provide me with the paper work they would not pay the fee since it was my responsibility alone. I then told the school that I would not be available next semester.

My question for you experienced Thailand teachers is do you think I'm being unreasonable?

I've taught in Korea, Taiwan and China and in these places the schools cover the costs associated with work permits and visas, what is the standard procedure here?
