  1. A friend of mine with retirement extension stuck in Europe and probably never coming back wants to sell his car here. Apparently the transport dept requires a certificate of résidence which he obviously cannot provide. It seems to me that it should be possible to produce some kind of proxy but I cannot get reliable

infos about this. Anyone has actual experience of this situation and how to untangle it?

  2. Assuming you are using an Android phone, get yourself a Google CHROMECAST device (about 2,000THB at Lazada) and plug it in the HDMI port of any ordinary TV of your taste.  That way you can cast anything from your phone to your TV. I have one on each of my TVs and it works brilliantly.

Assuming you have a laptop, it would be easier to put the VPN on that and then cast to your TV. A friend tried to connect his Samsung via VPN but gave up because it would never work effectively ....and he is a software geek. Samsung TVs have their own operating system, not your usual run of the mill Android.

AS I know it you cannot cast (at least with CHROMECAST) if your device's VPN is on...

  4. I am not a farmer, nor a chemist... But I follow the news and live half the time in an agricultural tambon. Presently there is a heated debate in France and other countries about the use (and possible future ban) of Glyphosate. Nothing of the sort here, every village has some kind of shop that displays glyphosate in a variety of packaging and brands. It just sells like hot cake being havily used in the fields (mostly pineapple in my area) and anywhere else to clean vegetation around houses etc...It takes my neighbour 15 minutes to spray glyphosate once or twice a year around his house while it takes me half a day to clean the same area by hand around mine. Crazy farang the think...

I once asked one of my neighbour how he was measuring the doses. The answer was that "he knows". Given that a very large chunk of the population around here cannot read their own language I wonder how they can even try to follow the manufacturer's preconisation.

Problem goes further than the quality of fruit and vegies because eventually the excess of pesticide goes in the soil, than in the water we drink...Until the governement sends agriculture specialists to educate the farmers, that situation it is very unlikely to change.

So to answer your question I do not think you can avoid being exposed to this pest, just try to limit by throughly cleaning what you eat, may be vinegar helps, not sure though, and install a serious filtering system if you live in the sticks.

  5. I have 4 Chromecast devices, all from LAZADA (2nd generation about <2000THB), no prb at all.

Also have one XIAOMI Mi Box S that integrates Chromecast (also from LAZADA 2500THB), very handy coz it comes with its own remote (bluetooth) so you don't have to use your phone or computer

By the way if you use Mac please note that MIRACAST will not work.

  6. I recently saw a woman at a petrol station pumping 50psi in her tyre which happened to be the same as mine. When I asked her why she was doing that ( the manufacturer advises 35psi), she told me that she was often carrying stuff and it was better that way. I mentionned the risk of blowing a tyre and that triggered the usual "mai pen rai" with a broad smile! i just hope she will not learn the lesson the hard way...

  7. Having worked, lived and driven in several parts of the world, including some third world countries I have come the conclusion that thais are somehow "victims" of their middle income status country...Roads here are generally speaking in very good condition and cars rather new and many of them very powerful. These 2 factors allow (far too) high speeds. I drive 30K kms/year at say 10% over speed limitations and find it very common to be overtaken by cars going much much faster than that...In parts of Africa where I used to drive you couldn't go much faster than 60 because the potholes would take care of it, quickly!

The other factor as often mentionned in this forum is the lack of a proper highway police. Being french, I can remember 50 years ago when we were driving more or less the way they drive here nowadays. It took many years, a strong political will (and a zillion radars) to enforce the limitations and nowadays you should consider yourself very lucky if you don't get fined for overspeeding in France!

On a hopeful note I would say that having been around for a while I see more and more law abiding drivers in Thailand, but the say 20% who drive madly do pose a real threat... Again, it will take a strong political will and drastic police reform.

Not sure I shall be able to see that while I can still drive !...

  8. Excellent post! I've been sharing my time between Pattaya and Nakhon whatever for 15 years and I am perfectly happy with this situation. Agree that most critics about Pattaya seem to come from people who do not really know the place and judge the book by its cover, not good practise...

  9. The blue book is irrelevant. What you need to be able to cross the border is an "International Transport Permit" sometimes called car passport issued by the DLT. Of course you will need to present the blue book when applying, the car will also be subject to a "technical test" the main purpose of which is to check that the chassis number embossed somewhere below matches the blue book. The whole process lasts about an hour and costs a couple of hundred baths.

Be also aware that Malaysia refused entry to vehicles with heavily tainted windows as we commonly seen in TH.

  10. Personally, I've been visiting Thailand for 30 years, permanently living for 15 and having dealt with various immigration offices in several provinces I can say that altogether, I was always attended to in a polite nice manner by the staff there. In the days when there were never ending queues at the old office in Sathorn BKK, there was plenty of time (sometimes the whole day) to wander around and  I was several times given the opportunity of witnessing conflicts arising from the lack of comprehension of the procedure by some ill mannered short tempered farang.

Not saying this is the case here, wasn't present to witness.

Besides, I doubt that they would put you on a plane out just for being ill mannered. Somehow, there must be some (serious) infringement of  the current regulations. Can't believe one sec that this could be related to the colour of the shirt on your pic!
