  1. He said “I stopped my car completely to talk with him before a furious argument began".

Key question - does he speak English?  If not, then that is an outright lie as there was not going to be any discussion, just an aggressive confrontation that turned out to be deadly.

Based on Thai law, he could get 15 to 20 years but it could be lower based on the fact he confessed.

Dont forget to let your licence expire by a couple of days and the new one will be for 6 years.

What would happen if you had an accident with an expired license?  Could your insurance carrier legally opt out of paying any claims associated with the accident?

  3. the URL might have been in the name of someone who isn't around anymore, or the email sent to an address no one checks, plenty of reasons why sometimes URL's lapse.

What? If you have an ecommerce website with a viable business, that business is going to make sure the domain name gets renewed.

I have no idea what you mean by an email might have been sent to an address no one checks. That makes no sense either. And no there are not plenty of reasons why a domain name would lapse, especially if it is tied to a business unless the business is shutting down or already gone.

Guess I will stop by and see if anyone on the premises has anything to say about this. That's if they are still open when I get there.

  4. Facebook still up with last update April 19 and a post advertising for help on the 15th. https://www.facebook.com/thegamechiangmai

Having a listing on Facebook is simple and doesn't cost anything so even if they are closing no need to do anything with Facebook.

However, If you had a professionally done website, which the Game in Chiang Mai did and plan to stay in business you're definitely going to keep your website site up for the $15 or so annual fee it costs to keep your domain name. Not renewing the domain name to me can only mean they will be soon shutting down. The only other explanation I can come up with is someone really dropped the ball and let the renewal slip and if that's the case, they need to get it done ASAP.

  5. Wanted to see if the Game in Chiang Mai had updated their website and instead found they didn't renew their domain name at Go Daddy which just expired on 21 April. Since it is such a minor cost in relation to what they must have paid to develop their website the only explanation I can come up with is they do not plan to be in business much longer.

Anyone have any more information on this? Just started going there and was getting used to stopping in for a beer now and then.

  6. Just back from Makro on Superhighway and they have good stocks of cooking

oil, BUT only in big cans and what looks like 500cc or less bottles.very few 1 ltr

size, check the price on one brand 18litre per litre 49.45, same oil in 1 ltr bottle

41.67 per ltr, so buying 18x 1 ltr bottles you would save 140 THB,plus the ltr

bottles are easier to use,and you could recycle the bottles,it would not mean

    you were a cheap Charlie,but a sensible businessman,right ,Joe

I only buy Rice bran oil ,and was surprised to see the price had dropped 2 THB

a ltr, maybe a result of over supply from all the rice they are milling for exportbiggrin.png

    regards Worgeordie

.....cooking oil yes and in big tins 13.75 & 18 ltr. , but is it palm or soybean oil or some other?????

so what oil do you use to cook with? you never answered this question.

  7. I want to use an air purifier in the master bedroom that is around 43 square meters. I found I can get Toshiba air purifiers for 43 square meters for between 12,000 and 14,000 baht. Or for what looks like a comparable Toshiba air purifier I can get one for 5,000 baht that cover 33 square meters.

What I am wondering is would it make more sense to buy two of the 5,000 baht air purifiers instead? It would actually be a little less and if I move to another house I might not need an air purifier for a 43 square foot room. Would the electricity cost be a lot higher with the two air purifiers or would I probably run them at lower speeds so the difference wouldn't be that much? Only other item might be the cost of replacement filters for two air conditioners vs one.

I'd appreciate hearing from anyone with knowledge in this area before I decide which way to go.

  8. Then the other option (or, in addition, for rooms that don't have an air purifier) is of course the 3M Filtrete material that you put on the outside of the existing washable filters that come with air conditioner units.

This is easily available for example at Central or Home Pro and not very expensive. Big C may also have it.

Doesn't hurt to purchase in advance though, this stuff is called "แผ่นกรองอากาศ 3M" (Phaen Krong Akaht Saam M).

    attachicon.gifFiltrete.jpg

(As an aside for non English speakers, it's pronounced 'Fil-treat', not as in the French, or 'Filtretty' or some such. tongue.png )

Will two of the 3M Filtretes be enough to make it through a typical season like last year? Also, where did you buy your Toshiba air filter? I'm going to need one for a 43 square meter room.

    Thanks

  9. I wanted to make an appointment online to extend my retirement visa next February but found there was not one single time slot available in February. In fact, It looks like every single day going forward shows everything is already reserved. Anyone been able to make an appointment recently or is there a problem somewhere?

  10. Word has it they lowered their food and alcohol prices drastically

Stop by and check it out

Instead of having to stop by to "check it out" why can't they get up a proper website (thegamechiangmai.com still redirects to Bangkok site) where people can see what their prices and any specials are?

This is one of the worst business launches I have seen for an establishment trying to compete on this level. They started off on the wrong foot with their exorbitant prices trying to see if they could find enough takers to overpay instead of offering reasonable prices right from the start. It was always going to be a challenge with the high overhead I am sure they have but they should have focused on building goodwill and a steady flow of customers which they did not.

If they are still around next year I will be surprised. Places like this are usually gone within a matter of months after opening and I doubt this will be any different this time. Maybe when they are gone someone with a little more business savvy can open a similar type bar/restaurant and make it work. I wouldn't hold my breath on that one though.

Why you always have to be negative?

    Is your life that bad?

In my opinion 1 website works.

Sizzler has one site that lists all there locations

Why should they post their prices

Go there and check it out yourself. dont be a lazy bitter person

    Why not post their prices?

Are they afraid of scarring people away?

    It seems to be working.

Every restaurant in CM posts their menu and prices online, even Le Crystal the 5 star French joint.

This attitude is doing them no favours whatsoever, no skin off my nose, nor anyone else giving comments here. It's called "constructive criticism".

Exactly my sentiment but Frank White from Bangkok, who I am guessing has a vested interest in this place, prefers to call me a lazy and bitter person for just stating the facts. No problem as I'm done posting on this and it won't matter in several months anyway as I predict this place will be added to the long list of other short lived CM casualties.

  11. Interesting. I always mail in my reports (Bangkok) but have never registered or EMS the return envelope - just a 10 baht stamp. Never had any issues.

I just affixed a 5 baht stamp as advised by the pinned information here. Maybe that's for the extra slow service. But now, after my experience, I've learned to wait at least a month after mailing for the return slip to arrive. Probably the late penalty would be waived if you have a registered mailing receipt to show.

Sante, my 90 day is due 1 September and I was going to do this one in person until reading your post on the crowd you encountered. Based on that, do you think I could still send in my paperwork tomorrow (Friday) or am I maybe too close to the report date to do it by mail?

  13. So what are the current specials? Saw on their facebook page buy 2 Chiang Export get 1 free but didn't say if they were large or small bottles and what the price was. Would have thought they could have the website up and running by now but that hasn't happened either.

  14. Good day my name is Andrew and i am the GM for The Game. I would like to thank you for your comments(positive & negative). We will be doing a market analysis over the next few days and adjusting prices for the CM market. Our goals is to make our customers happy. Please bear with with us. Until then stop by and enjoy our live sports and drink specials. We look forward in being your part of your community

    Thank you

    Andrew

We also will be adjusting our pool tables to make playing more enjoyable.

Hi Andrew, good that you have the bottle to respond to what has been said, and thanks for doing so. For me ( and I am in no way a "cheap charlie") the two issues are prices and sports coverage. As I said a few posts ago, you have merely transposed your Bangkok prices for food and drink to Chiang Mai, and that wont work. Its the same as London prices and Provincial prices in the UK. There is a significant difference. A pint in Londons West End will cost about £5 whereas in most Provincial Cities it will be closer to £3. I would suggest that the same kind of principle applies between Bangkok and Chiang Mai. A lot of your clientele in Bangkok will be either tourists or foreigners with jobs. Because of where you are positioned in Chiang Mai, your clientele at this point will be almost entirely retirees, quite a different market from Bangkok.

With regard to sports coverage, we need to be pretty sure that the major event we want to see will indeed be screened as we walk in five minutes before kick off, and that applies not only to football and rugby but also events like formula 1, golf/ ryder cup, etc etc. At the moment your website doesnt seem to have a Chiang Mai page. It reverts to Bangkok, and to be honest, we aint bothered what youre showing in Bangkok as we are all in Chiang Mai!!

Most of us are excited and happy about the new place and really want it to succeed, and of course all new places will have teething problems, but glad that you are addressing them. In summary, if on a saturday or sunday evening when most of the main live events take place, people are faced with beer at well over 150 baht a pint, and food snacks at around 300, then they will vote with their feet and go elsewhere! Its no good advertising a pint at 95 baht if it ends at 6pm happy hour finish!!

Maybe you could be more specific with the sports you want to watch. I am sure if you or anybody asked, the staff would be happy to change the channel, or give you the remote and indulge yourself.

As for beer prices, I drink local, Chang and Leo 95 baht a pint not unreasonable for sitting in aircon, with 14 TV's to watch, IMO. I hve indulged in some spirits and was not shocked by the pricing what so ever. What other place in CM has 14 TV's?

Food and prices, I have eaten many items on the menu, have not had any complaints on portions by any means, and quality is well above any other place I have eaten in CM.

I can only assume you know how much it cost to maintain an establishment such as The Game or any others for that matter, so maybe you can give the management some tips how to reduce costs, so they can give you the experience you desire, for the price you and others are willing to pay.

Problem is they, like every other business, have fixed costs but customers don't give a hoot what the operation costs are. People are looking for value for their money and if you can't deliver that you will most likely fail. Just basic economics of what works and what doesn't.

Regarding The Game, add in the two or more farang managers/staff they are paying plus the local help plus the rent and utilities and you have a monthly expense that probably makes it near impossible to reduce prices to the point they need to be.

For this place to have any chance, they will have to dramatically reduce their prices and pray this will in turn bring in the volume of regular customers they need to stay afloat and make a profit. Anything less and you can add The Game to a long list of others that have tried and failed.

My guess is this place was DOA based on the demographics alone. Like the real estate saying goes it is all location - location and this is not the place to put in a high end sports bar. I give it 6 months but that may be generous. Hopefully I am wrong but this is gong to be one hell of an uphill battle if they make it.

  15. I've always ordered food when I went, but have also brought food with me (my lady friend wanted pizza). They were ok about it, and I'm pretty sure I've seen other customers eating food they bought from street vendors.

There may be a few western foods on the menu, french fries and stuff like that, but it is largely Thai food, and good Thai food.

I don't know how they make money, but they've been there for years so they must be doing something right. I hope they continue to do so, I like the place.

so exactly where is the place located?

  16. Do they have thew football yet?

Yes please join us every saturday & sunday

Please check our fb page or our website for our live sports schedule

    Thegamechiamgmai.com

    Facebook.com/thegamechiangmai

We will also run beer specials during live BPL games

FYI your website redirects to thegamebangkok.com and all it has is some photos of the Chiang Mai branch on it, Why not get the Chiang Mai website up and put your prices and specials on it which you should have been doing from the start.

  17. I d like to congratulate Chiengmaijoe who, based on his comments must be the only person in CM who doesnt take account of prices! Most of us mere mortals work within a budget of some description and certainly have to take account of what things cost!

My point is, that so long as somewhere is offering something a bit different then I don't mind paying a bit more

Joe, maybe I'm missing something, but what is a bit different about burgers and drafts? I did 5 large Leos for 199 last night, plus 10 satay sticks, grilled to perfection for 50 THB. I admit, I am on the cheapskate list, but no one on this planet can say I owe them one Baht, and the people I do business with show me respect like I show them; or I will no longer be a customer. I maintain a 770 credit score, and fully insure myself for medical expenses. I wonder how many of the 200 per pint crowd can say that? Drunken sailors annoy the piss out of me. Sure, first of the month they'll be wasted, buying rounds, then need to be put on a leash or carried home, then by then end of the month, they are requesting credit "until the first" from mom and pop stores. Absolutely pathetic.

Thighlander, care to share where you got those 5 large Leos for 199 baht at?

  18. I mailed mine last Friday afternoon (15th - 2pm) from the Phra Singh Post Office...

EMS showed delivery to Immigration on Monday the 18th at 10am...

Postal guy hand delivered the return EMS with my stamped 90 day reporting on Wednesday the 20th to my house...

I would recommend paying the extra 30 baht for return EMS tracking...

Then all of this can be seen thru the EMS tracking website too...

    http://track.thailandpost.co.th/tracking/default.aspx

PS my house is in Suan Dok a stones throw from immigration - so being in the city is no problem thumbsup.gif

PSS I used the english text on the envelope as described in the pinned post (as well as english text for my return address)...

The post office are a very professional bunch and had no problem understanding english coffee1.gif

How many days did you mail it in before you were scheduled to report? I read it needs to be sent in 15 days prior to the report date at http://www.immigration.go.th/nov2004/en/base.php?page=90days but the date is November 2004.
