  1. Thanks for the info on your experience. I will be going for my extension based on Marriage to a Thai very soon after I get my Affidavits done and over and receive the Marriage Cert. I'm still going to Vientiane on Tuesday to get a double-entry Visa so hold me over until I can clear up all the paperwork I will need. When I come back I will apply for my 1 year Thai Driver's License. Can anyone provide any info on the "issues", if any, of taking and passing the test to obtain a Thai Drivers License? Also I would hope the Driver's License Test Book is available in "English", correct? Any information will be so much appreciated, like the Test difficulty if any, and the expected passing grade, etc.? Thanks in advance

Hi - i know it was not meant to be funny at all, but your questions about the Thai driving licence did make me chuckle. Relax - it is not a 'real test' with 'grades' ! Most people will tell you that if you can stamp on a pedal on the floor when a light in front of you turns from green to red, you will pass. There is a rudimentary 'eye test' as well. I don't remember any kind of 'Test Book', but maybe that has come in recently - other members might help with that. Two points - obviously, your home licence must be up to date and in clean shape, taking that to show them is a must; second, i found it relly helpful to take a polite Thai person with me to avoid problems with language which would just hold things up and irritate the office staff. You will need some proof of where you live i think - name in 'House Book' ? - but check this with others as my memory isn't 100% on what i had years ago. Good Luck - but i'm sure you'll be fine ! :-)

Glad I brought "someone" a chuckle, lol! I guess alot more serious stuff in the US to obtain a NEW Driver's License! I guess I'll just go the office with my beautiful new wife and let her "talk and ask questions for me"! I'm sure I'll be funny more on here! Better than being a "bitter old man" right? cya

See this topic on the motoring forum: Applying For 1 & 5 Year Thai Driving Licences

Thanks UJ, ur always so prompt with ur helpful info! I see this here:

A recent report (April 2009) says that documents required for first application are:

    Original passport + 2 copies of visa page and main page;

Medical report (any doctor can supply)

    Address confirmation from immigration + 1 copy;

    Current International Driving Permit

First registration, after that reaction test, colour test, another colour test, after that payment and making pictures.

** How do I get an Address Confirmation? Also I do NOT have an "International Driving Permit" just a US License expiring the end of April. Thanks

While I am waiting on a couple of Documents from the US to obtain a Marriage Certificate, I am going to Vientiane on Tuesday to apply for a double-enty Visa. I am wondering if someone could please advise me if I would be able to get a Multiple-Entry Visa there, the cost of which? , and also, will I be able to obtain a 1-year Driving License with a double-entry or multiple-entry Visa in Thailand, as my US License will expire on April 30, 2014. In the US you have a 30 day grace period from expiration, but I want to try to get my License here in Thailand. The next time I should be able to get the normal "5 year" License, right? Any advise would be much appreciated as I need to get this all done very soon! And to the OP, I am probably going through the same situation as they are telling me I need to provide a Divorce Decree for the 2 Marriages I had in the US, even though the 1st was more than 24 years ago (Divorce), and the 2nd was over 8 years ago. Good Luck!

You would not get any multiple entry visa in Vientiane. Once you are married you could get multiple entry non-o visa in Savannakhet based upon marriage to a Thai.

You can get a 2 entry tourist visa in Vientiane.

You can get a one year Thai drivers license with a tourist visa. If you have a non immigrant visa or an extension of stay you will get a 5 year license next time.

Have you looked at this webpage on embassy website http://bangkok.usembassy.gov/service/notarial-services.html that has info about getting an affidavit done for getting married and another one for your previous marriage. They will not ask for a divorce certificate. Not all Amphoes will ask for it either when you register your marriage.

Thanks for the help UJ. I have NOT looked at this but I certainly will now. My Wife's Sister works at "an Amphoe Office" but I don't think it is the one for Chaiyaphum where we live! I will check that. I hope I can get this all taken care of soon! Am I correct that in Savannakhet that they do NOT ask to show financial proof? And if so, what are my issues later with reporting with/without "proof"? Again much thanks.

Jomtien Beach immigration might be crowded, but I think it is the easiest.

You might want to go there and stay in a hotel for a night and use it as your address on your visa application.

Their volume is so great and they are so accommodating, I believe just about anyone can get any type of visa easily there.

Thanks to all for the advice. As I said before my Wife's Sister works for an Amphur in Khuan San (spelling?) and that is NOT our Amphur. She told my Wife that we will need to take the Marriage Certificate and or the Affidavit to the US Embassy to be sworn to and Notarized and THEN we will need to have BOTH translated from English into Thai! Are we getting the "wrong" information from her? Please let me know what I would need to expect to have to do and where if you will. As I am hoping, soon I will have all this "behind me", and then I can bother everyone with a different subject! lol

  6. Wish I didn't have to admit this, but it's MY FAULT my now beautiful new Wife is addicted as I BOUGHT IT FOR HER! If she is happy and as long as I "come first", I need to be happy, as again I say, I CREATED THIS MONSTERETTE! I wonder if the OP helped her obtain the phone he is now unhappy about! This is somtimes, very entertaining for someone new to this "gadget world"! Good Luck!

  8. Did this run last year in the girlfriend's car. Left the car at the Nong Khai Resort (100 baht per night) which is right opposite the train station. Got the train back from Laos and only had to walk across the road.

    Enjoy your trip!

If you remember, how much was the Train ride? and how did you stamp into Thailand? Also what is the easiest way to get to the train station from the Thai Consular Visa building? Thanks

  9. The consular section where you need to go is separate from the embassy. There is a map you can get by clicking the link on the webpage.

I tested the link an it works for me on Chrome.

One last question, I "hope" (and I bet most of you do too, lol)! Can anyone recommend a decent inexpensive Hotel near the Consular section where I will be going to, obviously be spending the night so as to pickup my Passport/w/Visa the next day?

  10. I appreciate all of your help for all of us who are a little apprehensive about these "runs" until we do it a couple of times! Can anyone tell me, since I'm going to Vientiane on 4 March to obtain a double-entry tourist Visa, if I should have any problems with that being that my Current 60day-Tourist Visa-extended to 90 days, will expire on 5 March? 4 March is the VERY SOONEST I can go to Vientiane from Chaiyaphum for this exercise! I would appreciate any help from "anyone" as long as I don't get the wrong info please!

No problem to leave on either the 4th or by midnight on the 5th.

Thanks UJ. Also I will I need to show my new dates to fly out of Thailand after the "dates of the double entry with extensions will be exhausted"? I will more than likely try to get another double entry at that time if no-one here thinks I will not be able to!? Also and most importantly, can anyone here please tell me the hours of operation of the Royal Thai Embassy in Vientiane as they seem to not want to answer there phone. And just to obtain a double-entry, will I have to stay over night if I arrive early on the 4th or will I be able to get the Visa I'm after fairly quickly? Thanks in advance!

Info about embassy consular section here: http://vientiane.thaiembassy.org/vientiane/en/consular/consular_check/

You apply morning of first day and pick it up the next afternoon.

It does not matter if you fly out or cross by land as long as you leave on or before the permitted to stay date stamped in your passport it will not be a problem.

You should not have a problem getting another 2 entry visa.

Thanks, a relief. So I do not need to show a "flight-out" of Thailand? And also I had one heck of a time making the link work, but finally copied and pasted it and got it to come up. I see something on there saying the Embassy I will need is in the "Counsular Section", am I reading that wrong? I will be going to the main

    Royal Thai Embassy correct?

  13. You will hav eto go to Laos, either Savanakhet or Vientiane.

The cost of a tourist visa is 1,000 baht in (local curency) per entry, so a double entry will be 2,000 baht.

Thanks for this too Mario.. I had almost decided to go to Nong Khai!? Will I need to change my flight on 5 March to a later date before applying for the double-entry? And what copies/documents besides my Passport will I need?

  14. a single entry is 60 day and can be extended by 30 days and a double means you have 60 days and can extend it by 30 days, hop over the border and return to activate your second entry for another 60 days and 30 day extension.

Note that the second entry must be made before the visa expires, so you might have 1 or to days less on your first entry.

Again thank you and so sorry to bother you again! But can you please tell me the "best and easiest" place to go to obtain the double entry Visa? And also if you know, (i'm sure you do), how much will the single-entry and double-entry cost? After this I will try to leave you alone, (for awhile, lol)!

  15. What kind of entry are you now on and how much time do you have left?

Thanks for the reply Mario. I am on a 60 Day Tourist Visa, extended to 90 days, and I have until March 5th! I wonder if I can go the route of getting a muti-entry Visa somewhere on the Laos Border as I've seen posted on here? We haven't finalized all the paper work needed to get the Marriage Cert as I didn't know I needed a copy of my Divorce Decree from over "20 years ago"!! Any help would be appreciated asap!

You can go to Laos and get a new (double) entry tourist visa. That is the only thing you qualify for till you get married and have a marriage certificate.

Again, thank you for the info! Can you please tell me the best place to go for the double-entry tourist visa? I am in Chaiyaphum, but I have access to a vehicle!

Also Mario or whoever can answer, how long will I have with the "new double-entry" tourist visa?

  16. What kind of entry are you now on and how much time do you have left?

  18. For an extension based on marriage, you should get yourself a Non Imm O Visa at a consulate.

That will give you a 90 day entry.

At the end of that entry, up to 30 days prior to your permission to stay to date, go to an immigration office and apply for an extension.

Assuming you have your documents and finances in order, they'll give you 30 days. Go back in 30 days and get the remainder of the year.

Thanks, but can I apply for that in Thailand or maybe Laos? And please help me understand what you refer to as "the remainder of the year"! Also will it be a 1 year Extension/Visa so I can open a Bank Account? Don't know why I'm so confused, sorry!

Yes, there is no denying violence against and by civilians in connection with anti-government protests gets world attention. Look at all the attention in the past by international news media given to Cambodia, Mynamar, and Eqypt who needed a change in goverance for the sake of survival of its citizens. But I think the reality is that the world community does not view Thailand as an absolute democracy where all governing positions are elected, where police enforce the rule of law, where the military falls under civilian control, and where the only other independent federal agency is the Supreme Court appointed by an elected legislative body. Thailand is an anomoly in governance compared to the Ukraine and Venzuela.

I believe that the world community does not condone the acts of overthrowing an elected government by former government leaders who only came to power through military power, used violence themselves to keep their power, used State of Emergency to control open protests, seek to regain their power through disruption of the democratic process, who stand against the nation's constitution on the freedom to vote, who insist on an unelected "council" to rule the nation in place of an elected legislative body, etc. The case for attention on Ukraine and Venzuela protests are far more legitimate concerns for democracy than it is on Thailand.

Suthep's "yellow revolution" does not appeal to democratic nations who do not tolerate anarchy as a legitimate process for change in goverance. International news media naturally likes to report on violence, it's audience catching. But as you surely have witnessed in various world news media, coverage of Thailand anti-government protests is very lightweight, spoken with general platitudes such that a listener is unlikely to jump up and say, "Bully for you Suthep!" compared to the very media empathy and depth of coverage given to Ukraine and Venzuela.

    A thoughtful post indeed.....

Well Mr Suthep,,,,,,u have blood on your hands......

The BEST 2 QUOTES HERE! The rest are very biased it seems to me and very uninformed. I wonder what your former County or State would do if someone like Mr Suthep (or suspect) would do if they distroyed the tourism (over 2 million I hear) and then had the audacity to try to keep people from voting? I know where he would be right now in the US! Somewhere where he couldn't continue to EXCITE RIOTS! He started all this because, imho, he's too scared to wait for the appropriate time to "try" to run a legitmate campaign! Yes there are many problems in Thailand Government, but tell please of one Government in the world which has NONE?

    Sorry, that's "Country" not County!

  21. I am so glad to be able to not just read everyone's posts and replies because NOW I can post too! I hope this is "somewhere" near the subject here, but I am still a little confused on the financial requirements for a Marriage Visa! It IS a 1 YEAR Visa? Also, is it 400K or 40K per month, and most importantly, I am told you can use a "combination" of the 2 to add up to the 400K! Is this correct?
