The raise in funds had nothing to do with 9/11, it happened around 1998, and had everything to do with the devaluation of the baht. All of a sudden $1,000 US went from being worth around ฿25,000 to around ฿50,000. So they raised the income and money needed to stay in the country. Never made much sense to me. The US dollar may have been worth a lot more baht, but in Thailand a baht still bought about the same. Of course that was 18 20 years ago. Inflation has eaten into the amount a baht will buy and the US dollar at the present time is worth about 70% of what it was in 97/98.
Do you recall if that was before or after 9/11?

I get a retirement extension at Sakon Nakhon, based on an embassy letter. In ten years they have only ever asked me for a bank book once, I think about four years ago, and they sure didn't check to see if money had been transferred into the account on a monthly bases, it hadn't, there was only I think about five to ten thousand baht in the account. If you are over 50 and meet the 65,000 baht monthly income requirement, a retirement extension is a lot less hazel to get than a marriage extension, no going to Bangkok, or wherever they send it, for one thing.

At Sakon Nakhon, I take my book updated that day, and in ten years of extending based on an embassy income letter I have only been asked to show them it once. I never volunteer it, and there is never much more than a couple of thousand baht in it. If you have one take it, if you don't, I would try to open a bank account just incase they ask for one, but sometimes that's not that easy, although personally I've never had any trouble.

฿87,000 I figure amortized over 7 years you will be paying the same as your electric bill, so no extra cost for the solar. Then you have free electric until the inverter needs replacing, maybe ten to twelve years. Then you will have to replace the inverter, but buy then they should be quite cheap. I have been pricing them, they seem to drop in price almost daily. Please keep us posted on your solar project. I am very interested in solar, ithink I'm a bit old for it, but I'm always interested in real costs and returns to convince other younger folks to go that way.

I have said this many times before, but will repeat. I have had four different work permits in Thailand, from three different labour offices, while being on an extension to stay based on retirement. The first extension I got I asked for one based on marriage, but had the financials for retirement. The Immigration officer gave me one based on retirement. I explained to her I wanted to work, teach school, she said no problem.

Well right! There probably is an option for an under the table payment to fix it.
I have no idea where or with whom one would initiate this, do you?
he walks into local immi office offering cash, I think he'd leave in handcuffs on his way to the IDC [emoji44]
OP says hes got cash, you gotta wonder why he didnt get a visa based on child..
and only learnt of the bans a month ago..
not much sympathy TBH
He should think about marrying his gf so he can take the family with him whilst he serves out the ban
How would he hear of the bans? Many people don't follow TV or anyother forums. Many people don't have interaction with other foreigners, or if they do immigration topics wouldn't always come up. It is quite possible he didn't hear about the ban. If in effect he knew nothing about it I feel very sorry for him. -
I have had 4 different WPs, from 3 different provinces on a retirement extension. So in my experience you can get them. When I applied for my first, I applied for a marriage extension, because I know you can work in that. However I had the financials and the officer gave me a retirement extension. I explained I wanted to get a WP for teaching. The officer said no problem. The officer was right, there was no problem. However I have heard of people having a problem. By the way on the stamp for the retirement extension, there is no place it states work is prohibited.

Joe, my friend from Norway is in a similar situation. He needs another 30 days, can he get an extension from any immigration office?
-
A friend just sent this to me, anybody hear anything about this?
"Another pink card/yellow book question.
I've just been to Sunbelt to ask a few questions.
One was about this subject, and they told me that if you have a yellow book you will soon not need to do 90
reporting, and if you have a pink Id card you do not need to do 90 day reporting already."
I find that this is probably untrue, but he says the lawyer told him, "It is law. And cannot be changed by regional authorities"

Good luck, sometimes things here are very fast and efficient, other times not. A lot depends on the particular office you are working with, sounds like you have a good one. To be on the safe side and prevent future problems I would get your birth certificate translation certified, then you will be put on your mother's house registration book, and be assigned an ID number, and then you will get an ID card which I believe is good for ten years. Once you get that you can apply for a Thai Passport.

I have a friend who was just recently at an attraction in Nong Kai, that had a Thai and Farang price and separate lines. My friend who had a Thai ID card stood in the Thai line, showed his ID and got the Thai price. His farangs friend had to pay farangs price and was pissed off, lol.I went to Khao Yai national park yesterday. In front of the park it says 40 Baht for adults (in Thai) and 400 Baht for adults (in English). I've had the ID card for foreigners for some time now and thought I'd give it a shot at the national park.
The lady in the booth wanted 490 Baht for 1 foreigner, 1 Thai and 1 car. I asked her "Why" and she said it was 400 for foreigners.
I gave her my ID and she said "Oh OK " and let us in for 130 Baht.I
don't know if I was just lucky or if that is their policy.
YMMV

Yes the number under the picture is the number of cards that office has issued. Mine is 005, my friend has 001, and another friend is 004.I got my card at Khon Kaen today, no problem.
The number at the top of the card and the number under my photo are slightly different. The number at the top is certainly the 13 digit number from my tabien baan and ends in 26 (ignoring final check digit). But I am wondering if the last two digits in a smaller type under my photo is the number of cards issued so far, which in my case is 24.

The first extension of stay based on retirement I received, I actually applied for it based on marriage, when it was returned stamped retirement, I was quite upset, and explained to the officer, that I was planning on teaching school and wanted to be able to get a work permit. She said no problem, you can get a work permit on this extension. Nowhere on the extension is it stamped working is prohibited.
You can get a work permit with a non 'O' or extension of stay if a parent too.Just to clarify, I have had four work permits from three different provincial labour offices attached to an extension of stay stamped retirement.
Thanks for the info. I thought only B or O for marriage allowed this - looking at this thread and others:
http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/554437-non-immigrant-o-employment-prohibited/#entry5293725
Evidently, the local labor office has the final say.
I've heard of people with extensions of stay for retirement getting a work permit. As you say the labour office have the final say. But it effectively makes the extension of stay invalid, and if immigration become aware the extension could be revoked.
-
I guess after Bill Dickenson (sp) the former Counselor General died, they stopped issuing them from Toronto. I stay on an extension of stay now, seldom return to Canada.

I just extended my visa for 1 year based on retirement at the Sakon Nakhon office. After everything was done I handed the officer the TM 30 my wife had filled out. He handed it back saying everything was in the computer.

Don't know if you can still get the Non Oa from the Toronto Consulate, but you used to be able to. You needed a letter showing you had no Criminal Record (obtained from your local police office), a medical certificate, and proof of funds.

Yes he is very aware of that, but thinks he can marry her in Thailand, he doesn't care if Lao recognizes the marriage or not, as long as the Thais do. I'm not sure if he can do this or not.Not wishing to derail the topic but is your friend aware that obtaining permission to marry a Lao national is a drawn-out and not inexpensive process?
-
So she won't have to reach the financial requirements just him? Thank you.
-
My friend is planning on marrying his long time Lao GF, and is curious if she can stay in Thailand attached to his extension of stay based on retirement, as his wife? Is the income requirement the same or different?
-
MJCM, thanks for the quick reply.

Does anybody have a PDF or Word copy of the new intrusive form long stay non immigrants are now being asked to fill out?
-
Many years ago the police from our district office came and asked some questions about me, my memory is vague about it, but as I recall I was away, they left a form I had to fill out and then they returned to pick it up. It was at least ten years ago.
-
You can go to Savannakhet, and apply for a non immigrant O and pick it up the next day. It will be for 3 months, in the third month you can apply for an extension.

" in all honesty if you are genuine and receive an income from your said affidavit as submitted to said embassy surely you have 800k thousand available to do it with truth.
Good to see the Thai authorities stopping the stupidity of these so called income letters."
I have an income considerably higher than the required ฿65,000 a month. However I do not have the funds to put ฿800,000 in a Thai bank. Fortunately I am Canadian, and the Canadian embassy still gives out the letters. Perhaps because one has to show them definitive proof of income. For how much longer they will do this, I have no idea, if they stop I am afraid Thailand may lose a long stay foreigner who supports a family of 8 Thais in relative comfort.
