They call everything in chatuchak JJ-market...very confusing indeed.

Also that big mall right next to the weekendmarket, what's going on with that? It looked like going to collapse for years but last week i saw it under construction...is it still open or what are the plans for it? It really looked in a very bad condition before they put the nets all over it.

I think JJ because some people write JatuJak..hence JJ.

The regular market - Chatuchak (or JJ) is open as normal

The night market - JJ Green was closed in Sept 2018. The 21-rai space will be returned to the Queen Sirikit Park Foundation for construction of a park.

yes thankyou someone has just put me right, headline said JJ GREEN FAMOUS MARKET TO CLOSE, but in the small print it said NIGHT MARKET  misleading heading

Probably a correct headline, the night market was always named JJ Green Market.

  3. Thanks to everyone for the replies.

The word I was looking for was USUFRUCT....thank-you.

    To answer a few questions raised;

In terms of buying a fridge and expecting ownership of a house...not the case. I am investing in the refurbishment of a property.

Have just bought the fridge, 120,000thb discount to 77,000thb. The investment amount is more than a toaster, kettle, and fridge.

I know many people will reply with ...your fridge is 1 yrs rent on my condo, etc, etc, etc.

Been with the GF for approx 5 yrs, I don't consider my original post suggests that the relationship is on the rocks...simply I am trying to protect an 'investment'. Investment may be the wrong word (my apologies). Perhaps more like trying to secure my future peace of mind and place of lodging, ie, having spent money on a place, I would like to live there.

Not new to Thailand, though fully accept my ignorance of many aspects...hence my post.

    Thanks for all the contributions.

  4. So my longtime girlfriend is buying a house, freehold, her name, etc.

The place needs work and purchasing of items such as TV, washer, etc will be funded by me (I will move in).

Financially works out fine...I will cease paying rent. However, longer term I am looking to protect my investment should things turn sour.

I recall there is a legal document (cannot recall the name) which gives me the entitlement to stay in the property. Does anyone have any idea what it is called and how to set up?

    Thanks in advance.

Yeh - anything around 28-30 Baht to the AUD would be nice too (and normal).  I guess it will eventually change back.  But I just cannot understand that the currency of a 3rd world country that is being run by a military junta, can run the course that it currently is running.  Is the US doing soemthing to prop them up, and create an economic buffer against China?? It has to be something along those lines to last for so long, because it aint due to the normal economic and interest rate cycles.

Your kidding....3rd world country! Thailand has better roads and metro transport than the US or the UK. Better private sector dentistry and hospital care. Gun crime...let me think when was the last mass shooting in Thailand.

The US is joint third in the world for murder capitals of the world: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cities_by_murder_rate

GDP annual growth rate of 4% vs US 2.9% and UK of 1.2% https://tradingeconomics.com/

In terms of the original question, GBP / USD are screwed up because of the fundamental economics of both countries, and in general of the 'west'. Trump attempts war-mongering in a bid to assist the broken country.

As others point out the 'west' has had its day, Asia is on the rise and the anticipated 100 year economic boom of Asia and decline of the West has likely just begun.

Give me your supposed third world country any day of the week.

IMO the Ripple token is a scam. There is no real use case for the token itself since banks can issue whatever other token they like on the Ripple network and have no need to acquire XRP.

Only Ripple corporation profits from Ripple since they operate the network. Also note that the control the price as the by far largest holder. Sure some shitcoins can still be profitable since a lot of clueless noobs are entering the crypto space and will continue buying whatever coin they perceive as 'cheap', but there are many solid projects out there with real use cases that will appreciate, ICX is one example.

Maybe you ought to avail yourself of correct information and watch a few short videos.

  7. Yes the will.

A Thai relative who lives in Sydney claims the will is not available, meanwhile, another relative who lives in Thailand says the deceased spoke about a will in which property to be split equally amongst siblings. I don't know the family especially well, none of them are wealthy but it seems the guy who moved to Australia did very well and owns a property worth a substantial amount. When split each family member would get enough to clear out debts, etc...so sort of life changing for them.

Interesting you say the will is a public document. I will do some digging around on Google.

    Thank-you

  8. Posting this here, hoping there may be a few visa people with knowledge of Australian lawyers.

Thia national > moved to Sydney long time ago > successful and has property in Sydney > recently passed.

Supposedly left a will saying family members in Thailand should be beneficiaries, however access to documents being denied by people is Australia.

I don't know why, etc, etc. I know very few details, posting on behalf of a Thai friend.

Basically looking for a pointer if anyone has dealings with either a lawyer is Australia or in Thailand who is familiar with law of both countries.

    Thanks in advance

  9. If any Thai say that they accept this guys apology they are faking it. Look at the wai. There are three different positions of the hands when Thai's wai. When they wai someone considered to be of lower status or same status as themselves their finger tips will touch their chin, when they wai someone of higher status their finger tips touch their nose, for Buddha and the king their finger tips touch their fore head. He further didnt bend his head downwards as is practice. If you look at the photo you will see he didn't even try to do a proper wai, showing his contempt.

Perhaps contempt, but it would depend on the photographer capturing the 'exact' moment of the wai - impossible to say.

  10. So here is a very specific question, and hoping someone may be able to advise.

I know a Maechi (Buddhist nun) who is about to travel to SriLanka on a pilgrimage.

Maechi is a Thai national, living in Thailand, but also has UK nationality, and has a UK Passport.

I read conflicting info about Thailand allowing 2 passports.

The Maechi last entered Thailand about 2yrs ago on a one way flight from the UK, using the Thai passport.

Her plan is to travel to SriLanka on the UK passport and has already booked plane tickets with UK passport details.

I guess the reason for using the UK passport was ease of visa for UK nationals.

My concern is, upon exiting Thailand on a UK passport, there is no valid departure card (UK passport never used when entering Thailand).

Upon returning to Thailand, using the UK passport, Maechi is given a 30-day tourist entry.

Maechi then continues life as a Thai citizen, does not leave after 30 days and potentially overstays for an enormous amount of time.

My thinking is she takes the hit on the airplane ticket already purchased, and buy another using the passport details on the thai passport.

Thoughts welcome from others with experience of 2 passports.

  11. Got a multiple-entry ED visa from London in December.

Arrived December 17th at 8.05am - before opens...early to beat the queue.

1 person already there. Opened doors at 9am, by which point about 5 people in queue.

By 9.05 maybe 15 people, so arrive early - though perhaps more holiday travellers at Xmas and busier than normal?

Handed over paper work / fees, all was in order and I left by 9.15, by which point maybe 20 people waiting.

Next day, arrived to collect (no same day visa I think), can't recall, but think collection is 11-12noon.

Many people, perhaps 30 when I arrived at about 11.15 waiting to collect.

Orderly queue, and collected passport, out of the door by maybe 11.35.

NOTE: ensure you have all forms filled in and correct papers when you go, otherwise you end up back of the Q.

When you arrive there are small ticket machines to collect a numbered ticket...make sure you get the correct one, pink & blue...I think blue for visa.

  12. Hello,

I have read many forums but see lots of conflicting info...totally bemused.

I have a non-immigrant ED visa with Multiple entry.

I need to leave Thailand for 3 weeks (for work in the UK). I leave before my 90 day stay is over.

Do I need to get a re-entry permit before I leave....or do I simply leave and then return on the same visa?

Thanks in advance to anyone who can offer the answer.
