  1. A good friend of mine, A very well-educated American who speaks reads and writes Thai and has been living here off and on for over 30 years told me something once that I've always remembered. As we all know, Thailand has never been colonized and for century after century laws have been stacked upon laws. In fact, if you look hard enough, there's probably a law that contradicts almost every other law.

From the labor law that I have read, all work is illegal without a work permit. But the way this is written cooking your own breakfast could be considered work and illegal.

I doubt any of my rantings makes sense but I hope they're useful.

I would not want to be in the position of arguing the finer points of Thai labor law with officials of the Labor Department when they come to inspect your wife's school and find you "volunteering" there.

  2. Would appreciate to be informed that posts are taken away, thanks for that!! I wanted to give another perspektive of this situation. A situation where local thais will observe how falang treat their elderly. Letting them live alone in a house a stonethrow away. Not letting them stay together at old age... I did just wonder how the thais will react.....

Who cares what the local Thais think? This person has to decide what's best for the MIL and the family. Appearances hardly matter in such a situation.

    Government offices open Tuesday

    Sat, April 05, 2014 05:01 PM

Anti-government protesters have agreed to open all government offices starting Tuesday, except Government House and the Interior Ministry.

The People's Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) said government officials except those of the two agencies could go back to serving people from April 8, said secretary general Suthep Thaugsuban after a meeting with the PDRC's allies on Saturday.

However, caretaker ministers may not enter the offices and the PDRC will put up a sign saying officials agree with the reform on the gates, he said.

"We shut down Bangkok in the hope that Yingluck [shinawatra] would resign. We overestimated her. She didn't care one bit about the troubles faced by Bangkok's people. When we restarted Bangkok but kept government agencies closed, it [the government] forced officials to work in remote offices, causing troubles to low-ranking officials," he said.

"That's why we decided to open government offices. However, the officials may not take orders from Yingluck and the government. They can only serve people and they must allow us to put up signs on the gates saying they would cooperate with the PDRC's reforms. They also need to take good care of these signs. If they are torn or blown away, they will have to fix them or we will close their offices again."

The PDRC left out Government House because "this office does not serve people but rather Yingluck".

As for the Interior Ministry, Mr Suthep said he did not trust caretaker minister Charupong Ruangsuwan who had accepted Nattawut Saikuar's proposal to separate the country.

  4. Sure it's possible but you'll need a lot of luck too. What if things don't work out after a reasonable amount of time? Do you have a plausible Plan B in that case? I wouldn't recommend you coming here unless you do.
