"It is unlikely that the second round in Thailand will go ahead now, due to problems likely to arise in entering the United States for the following round in Texas"
Didn´t they say that the MotoGP in Buriram will be save?

I just went through the whole process in November.
At least at the DLT in Prakhon Chai, Buriram Province, they did not accept any German International DL. Neither the one from 1968 valid three years, nor the one from 1926 valid one year. They wanted the original German DL translated into English or Thai, which can be done in Germany or close to the Embassy in Bangkok.
Then you have to go to the Embassy to get everything authenticated.
With all these papers you can go to your local DLT.
But as in Thailand you might get lucky with your IDL. I´d suggest you go there first and ask which documents they accept.
Good luck

Not wishing to get into an argument, but that statement shows very little understanding of how the actual, on-the-ground, Thai economy works.
In a country without any real social welfare net, western retirees inject money directly into villages and areas of the country that are not connected to the wealth networks of Thailand. They provide employment and direct support to families that would have had no other form of income. For at least half a century, the reliable flow of foreign money has kept segments of Thai society afloat that the Thai elites will never give a damn about.
Thailand is rich in resources but the elite have commandeered everything of value more effectively than the elite of almost any other non-communist country. The fact that the general Thai population is doing reasonably well, that fact that the disparities in wealth are not greater than they are, is largely down to the cumulative effect, over 50 years, of money being spent by westerners directly in communities.
You may consider that 300 baht spent on a meal, or that 1,200 baht on a dental check, or that 8,000 in rent to be trivial but, no, to the restaurant owner, and to the dentist, and to the condo owner, those things are important. The continued custom of the retirees you consider so insignificant is part of what keeps them in business, feeds their families, and helps fund whatever plans they have for the future.
Just to be clear, I am saying that there are swathes of Thai society whose prosperity is not tied to the generals and land-owning families. They will not benefit as the country as a whole becomes richer. They will not particularly benefit from the new mass tourism from China. They and the families they support survive on tough service industry jobs - restaurants, hairdressers, bars, hotels, massage, cleaning, sex workers, independent retailers etc - or being in a relationship with a farang. The elites may not "need" retirees, but the population they feed upon still does.
Retirees, in particular, are the linchpin. You can see that now, as the baht rises. Regular tourists can choose not to come, foreign business can choose to invest less, but retirees are more-or-less captive consumers.
As the money from western tourisms and foreign investment dips, the money spent by retirees becomes more important to local businesses and families, not less. The 10% of income that a small restaurant gets from retirees might be their entire profit, without which they go broke and everyone in the area loses that facility. Retirees are the safety net, the life-support that helps to get small local businesses and families through rocky times, and times are about to get very rocky indeed.
Yes, the civil servants with jobs-for-life in the Immigration Department may not understand this. Yes, the current gangsters in charge may be latching onto anti-western sentiment as a desperate substitute for democratic legitimacy. Yes, a young, dumb, hungover IO at Don Mueang who has never, himself, traveled abroad may derive some cruel sport from denying westerners entry to HIS country. But we have to recognize that all of these characters are f*cking idiots, with no ability to think through the longterm consequences of their actions.
We should, at least, aspire to be a tad smarter than that.

Can anyone please let me know what options I have to travel form Bangkok Airport to Prakhon Chai. I am arriving on Tuesday 3rd November at 18.20 hours and I want to get to Prakhon Chai asap. I am happy to travel overnight.
You have three options.
1. Take a taxi for about 3.000 BHT
2. Take the buss from Mochit buss station for about 700BHT
3. Take a flight to Buriram airport and then take a buss or taxi. not sure the of the cost.
If you like option one pm me and I will send you the phone number of the taxi driver that I use. The driver speaks English and has a decent car.
Cheers
Amsterdam
Thank you for you reply. What about taking the train?
I´m going to a little town near Prakhon Chai on Nov, 15th and as flights to Buriram seem to change or being cancelled on short notice I was looking for the best way to get there too.
1. about three years ago still at Don Muang I picked up a taxi outside the airport and after some negotiation he took me there for 4000 THB. The problem is that BKK taxi usually run on gas and at least at this time it was quite hard to find a gas station with lpg along the highway. Now I found a professional limo service in the internet that will charge 4000 THB with a Toyota Camry.
2. maybe prices changed in the last years but when I used a bus the last time the price was around 350 THB.
3. flights to Buriram are normally the best way to go as it takes just about an hour to get there. Unfortunately PB Air seems to reorganize its flight schedule. Normal price around 2600 THB with a promotion at last of 2000 THB. The problem of the airport of Buriram is that it is not even near Buriram but somewhere in the boonies. If you don´t organize some transportation on your own in advance you might have some problems already to get to Buriram.
@Amsterdam:
I would be interested in your taxi. What car is he driving as I have a lot of luggage but also don´t want to sit for several hours in an uncomfortable pick-up?

Very nice that you met Joseph, Doug and Helmut. Thanks for the pics. Good to see that they are ok. Hope to see them again soon, but most probably not before next year.
Tried to find this dam on Google Earth. Anyone that could tell me the longitude/latitude of it? I think Google improved the resolution of Isaan. Can see our house in Ban Lalompnoo and houses of the others in Paisal very clearly

8 minutes past and my wife is still speaking with her mam. So everything works the way it should.....

Before, Germany landlines have been on the list of free calls too but they removed it. I had to deposit 5 Euros and then you had unlimited free calls not just 1 minute.
I don´t know what the minimum deposit is presently but it worked quite well.
I checked the connection and it took me about 8kB/s for a normal phone connection. So I guess you should have at least a 128k-ADSL-connection to keep it going, but maybe it works with less too.
Anyone got any experience with lower speed or with connections to Thailand in particular?

Hi Lampard.
very sorry to hear that. Luckily I damaged the back of your pick up only a little bit last year.
Maybe you should start renting tanks...
-
The danger in Thailand taking action against Burma is that the Burmese know the secret to defeating the Thai army. You take any vehicle and put it in the path of the Thai tanks. When the tank hits the vehicle the tank driver will instinctively take off running.
cv
Are they the same tanks as the Italians use, 1 forward gear and 20 reverse?
If you would drive a FIAT tank, you would do the same

Teenagers Warned Against Having Any Sex At Any Time In Their Life
In response to a notice from the Loei Public Health Office, the Culture Ministry spokeswoman Khun Frigidasapenquin has come out with a warning to teenagers to protect themselves from ever having sex.
Khun Frigidasapenquin said that Thai people, especially teenagers, regard February as the month of love according to the Western culture. She said that teenagers who adopt this belief are unpatriotic and a revocation of their future voting rights will be instituted. She said that the sex only occurs as a result of drunkenness or rape. She said that any sex would definitely lead to unwanted pregnancies and other sex-related diseases.
Khun Frigidasapenquin said that teenagers should learn how to say no to any and all advances, adding that they should stop all risky behaviors, especially having any sex which definitely leads to fatal diseases in every instance. She urged teens to follow her tradition and never have sex, but said that if necessary, the teenagers should not have vaginal sex to prevent unsolicited pregnancies.
So i guess some A$$ f$§&king is ok ???

I wouldn´t try to import a car due to customs.
When I bought my PickUp in december at LUCKY CARS/QUALITY CARS in Bangkok they had a lot of decent looking Mercedes Oldtimers.
Not suitable for me to use in Isaan but I wish I would have one. Old memories come into my mind....

Try this one:

Thanks for your answers. Talked to my wife about that and it came out that she doesn like Nissan anyway so I will look for a used one.

I´ll arrive in BKK on the 26th and I´m about to buy a pick-up mainly for my father-in-law. I planned around 300-350k THB for a used Hilux Tiger but a new one would be better for sure.
Does anyone know and recommend some promotion for a new pick-up below 500k for some kind of space cab.
Doesn´t have to be SUAI just a reliable one that should last for the next ten years.
Any advice appreciated...

What do you expect when even the cops arrive drunk at the scene.

May I ask you where you bought the land: Buriram Province or Buriram City. As I´m married to a lady from Prakonchai I´m about to buy some land and I have no idea of property prices in rural areas.
Thanks for the help.
