  1. I've had one of these for four months and 3000 km. Fantastic with two complaints. No tool kit. 39th Honda motorbike my family have owned, first that came without a tool kit. And no way to access an owner's manual in English. Neither a major problem, but irritating nontheless. Bike too new for aftermarket service manuals to have been printed, and very few accessories are available. I bought a side bag to carry tools and stuff. Nice bag, leather, but attachment to the frame designed by a former Yugo engineer. But the bike, what a wonder. I rode CL350's and 450's from the 60's. Loved them. The Japanese/Chinese should do well with this 55 year old resurrection.

  2. Isn't this a comfort? I spend a lot of time outdoors, bicycling, skating, hiking. I came to accept being bitten by dogs as part of life here. I would head down to the hospital and get the vaccine, a series of shots, and pay the piper. No prophylactic vaccine is offered here evidently. I asked at the hospital and got the thousand mile stare. What, prevention? Foolish farang!

I have now had rabies vaccines nine times. Only once was I seriously hurt by dogs, a pack of ten or so that ripped some nice holes in my legs. I was lucky that a Thai guy with a slingshot came to my defense. I now carry one. And some guys actually have the gall to accost me when I shoot at their dogs when they are attacking me.

So now I am told that the vaccines are low quality and quite a few humans have died from rabies. Wow! A Chinese manufacturer shipped some of this useless stuff to Thailand. The owner is now in jail. I hope they hang him.

  3. My dad lives here in Thailand with me. He is 73 years old and will leave this month for a trip back to the US to visit friends and family and travel a bit. I would like him to have emergency medical insurance that would cover him while en route to the US and later coming back to Thailand. He has insurance here in Thailand, but it does not pay outside of Thailand, and he has Medicare once his feet are planted in the US. So I'm basically looking for about 30 hours each way of emergency medical coverage should some problem arise either on the way or coming back; so two days of risk for an insurance company. He has not bought his return ticket yet as he's not sure how long he will want to stay.

He exercises a lot is in good shape for 73. He caught pneumonia in China a few years ago and was hospitalized there for a few weeks, but other than that he's healthy as a horse. I mention the China incident as I know how ticky (tricky?) insurance companies can be about pre-existing conditions.

Can anyone offer some advice on where to buy this type of coverage?

  4. yup, that's the spirit. one guy pisses off il douchebag and he wants to get even by smoking 25,999,000 Asians, 25,999,990 of whom would jump ship in a heartbeat given the opportunity. and we all know how welcome they would be if they showed up in a boat on the shores of our homelands. not to mention that rocket guy could probably get off enough rounds to add another 50,000,000 or so to the tally. <deleted>, they ain't white folk, so, what, me worry?

sounds like another flabby big mouth from our illustrious past

    humans, the smart ones.

  5. I am looking for a suitable wood to make a small sailboat mast. A 12 foot 4x4 would do the job. White pine or fir would be my choices if available but neither seems to be sold here. Is there a light, strong, straight grained Thai wood that might be used as a substitute. Teak is too heavy.

    Any information would be appreciated.

  6. every girl should be taught to fight people who attack them to the death. my mom trained me in martial arts from the time i could crawl. she had every reason. i am a child of rape. she also taught me to not respond physically until i am attached physically. use words first, then go for the jugular if the idiot lays hands on me and does not back off when he knows he is in for a fight . this is the only thing that will put a dent in this type of behavior. even rich boys are afraid to die.

  7. There was a clapped out old Honda scooter pushed into the back of the garage of a house I bought last month. When I asked the previous owner about it she said it had belonged to her brother who bought a big bike and augured in the first day he owned it. It has no plate or any other documents and she told me to consider it mine. I pushed it 2km (ugh!) down to the local wrench wrangler who said it needed a little work and some tires, but that he could probably have it up and running for under 2000 baht. I need a scooter for local stuff here in the village. But can this thing be made legal? And if not, how different would it be from all the other unlicensed bikes I see buzzing around here. I live in the sticks, so there is no huge police presence, but I do see an occasional roadblock. The last one was pulling over anyone without a helmet. I wear a helmet. Any advice?

  8. check any truck supply outfit - that deals with tandem or tractor trailer equipment. They should have what you need. Is it 6 or 7 pin - round or flat ?

it's seven pin round. what i need is the female connector and about a foot of cable to change the UK type plug that is now on the trailer. and adapter would be nice, but i'm not holding my breath. i googled truck supply companies, dead end every one for non thai.

  9. Stihl dealer in BKK sells strimmers that can be optioned with a bulletproof bump head. Their strimmer line is great stuff, very tough. I bought the 2 stroke as it is lighter. Backpack is very comfortable. Use it to mow about 2 rai with a lot of flowerbeds and trees, easier to use than a mower with so many rocks. Also bought an excellent Stihl chainsaw there and will purchase a gas hedge trimmer when the hedge gets a big bigger.

  10. Can anyone recommend a program that from personal experience is a good way to learn to read and write Thai? Speaking and understanding would be of secondary importance due to deteriorating hearing. Something reasonably structured would be a big plus.

  11. You have to open the account in person at the main branch for your area. You cannot do so by phone or online. Mine took about three weeks to set up and I received my next social security distribution with no problems. No bigger haircut on the currency swap than with wires. And now I don't have to pay the wire fees. Only occasional problem seems to be when my money is due on a Thai holday, then it can be several days later than normal. Once you have opened the account you cannot get a debit card connected to the account nor can you do transactions online. You must go to the branch where you set up the account and make the withdrawal in person. This has nothing to do with Bangkok Bank, just Uncle Sam making sure no one taps the funds of a dead person. I had an account already open at Bangkok Bank, but I do not know if that is a requirment. It is convenient for me to make one trip to the bank each month and move the SS funds into my regular account that I can access as I please. You can still view the SS account online but no moving of money is possible without a personal appearance by the account owner.

  12. Anyone know if co2 inflatable life vests and re-arming kits are sold in Thailand, preferably online. I have found the vests on a few websites but they do not show re-arming kits for sale as well, which means that after the vest has been inflated once, it cannot be used again. I inflated the one I brought from the US and now cannot get a re-arming kit mailed to me as it violates postal rules to mail one. I find this odd as you can carry a vest and three cartidges on airlines, but the post office won't budge. Any help would be appreciated.
