Time to call for King Canute?

Not entirely true in that it does get plenty of domestic tourists on public holidays and seemingly the Thai middle classes still have plenty of money. Actually a number have been buying condos and the land office has been doing business. Yes there are no Farang tourists beyond the full time residents and the great bulk of low paid service workers are screwed. They are still building condos like mad. I don't think any of us really understand the Thai economy and I for one am not going to postulate what the future for Pattaya is post covid except that news of its death is exagerated

The post Covid tourist allowed into Pattaya in 2022 after quarantining and producing a visa paper mountain will love this.
The underground toilets of course will be self flushing in the rainy season and squats for the ladyboys for the rest of the year
The ample parking can of course be built on sand on the reclaimed beach
And just when we step back to admire the work there will be a new mayor and it can all be redone for the benefit of his cronies contractor's companies

Midsomer Murders are beginning to look both tame and credible compared to all this

Estate agents always predict house prices about to rise better buy now
Investment managers always predict the market is about to rise time to buy
So I suppose tour operators always say now is the time to travel.
It is the way of the world

Being on a condo committee I reckon half the time we make a loss on the water as there are frequent water outages and we have to buy at some expense water from water trucks. The water board charges us for the water through their meter. The water then goes to the pool, the gardens, the common facilities and the co-owners. I am pretty sure the co-owners meters are not owned by the water board, but I am not sure whether the individuals own them or the Condo. If the condo we would have to replace them if they malfunctioned. Once a year we have to clean out the tanks both underground and in the roof. A member of our staff has to go round reading the meters and preparing the bills so all in all not like a house where you get the water direct from the water board and no other expense. The fee we charge for water I am told cannot be changed by the committee but only by a General Meeting of the co-owners. The excess of the rate over the water board must vary from condo to condo but I know if we tried to raise it there would be a riot from the co-owners so as I said at the beginning we possibly make a loss

This could catch on. We could move Christmas in the Northern Hemisphere to coincide with the Summer holidays and lets have Easter to coincide with Wimbledon. The possibilities are endless

Too late JK! It's already been enshrined as another great Scottish "fact". Just like Walter Scott's novels are used to invent Scottish historical myths; and Victorian tartan patterns invented by enterprising Jewish tailors suddenly became centuries hold "clan traditional tartans".
Scots have a propensity for inventing history and then adding incredible imagined detail to it. Helped by clowns like Mel Gibson.
Oh come on everyone does it. St George and the Dragon, King Arthur and virtually every Hollywood historical film ever made has had their share of rewriting history. Maybe jealousy as the Scots are a little better at doing it than some.

My large bottles of San Miguel Light have a stamp on them saying brewed 18/02/20 and expiry date 18/0221 so obviously San Miguel think they will last a year. I hasten to add they will not

Is everyone supposed to guess what those controls/limitations are??
No idea but it will just mean visits to multiple shops or more frequent visits so hardly likely reduce crowding in shops. Seems a knee jerk reaction

It is panic buying because they first announce a ban till the end of he month, then reverse that decision and within moments several governors take it upon themselves to reinstate the ban. Previous decisions have been made with zero warning. Nothing to do with alcoholism and addiction as some snide comments suggest. People at 12 O clock don't even know what the rules will be at half past three yet alone tomorrow. Plus of course a bit of extravagant journalism to spice it all up as I found the supermarkets I visited yesterday had beer, wine and spirits, were not too crowded and people were being perfectly civilised

Stocked up with enough beer and wine plus some gin an hour ago to last for months and business with the alcohol section was booming. I just simply though do not trust them and tomorrow there could be a ban, the day after they will be giving free beers at the traffic temperature checks. You simply do not know. Beer the Thai version of loo rolls

No 3 a total farce. It was reported earlier today that 1 million have left Bangkok over this long weekend. The interior ministry has ordered, ordered no less, that people returning to their provinces be kept in quarantine for 14 days and that local authorities ensure that they are self isolating. Sometimes you really wonder about the fantasy land that people who issue such orders are living in

People's memories of what Pattaya was may be dying but look at all the condos being built, hotels and shopping centres opened, streets thoroughly congested and sprawl going way back to the hills on the dark side. What has been keeping Pattaya going in the last 10 or 20 years is not necessarily sleazeball westerners looking for a good time. Yet despite predictions there are a lot of Westerners still lurking here living comfortable lives often with their girlfriends away from the hubble bubble in the city centre. It is amazing how many one still sees in the midst of lockdown
So how much of this will be gone in the future? Like any place that relies on tourism it will take a while but there are the more permanent residents, weekenders from Bangkok and local tourism which will start the ball rolling before the hoards from other Asian countries arrive. A big blip in development but I would not equate Pattaya to a mining ghost town quite yet

a) Highly likely that people feeling awful with a temperature are not out and about
b) Those temperature guns unless used properly are pretty useless. Whenever anyone zaps me with one my temperature is way below what it actually is (I do take it every morning) and once I think I was recorded at 35.0 at one supermarket. Frankly I would be worried with such a case of hypothermia

If alcohol is banned for preventing a few dozen covid-19 deaths wouldn't it be a good idea to ban it to prevent the 20000+ annual carnage on the roads where about half are due to alcohol. As a beer and wine drinker myself I would be pretty miffed but the logic is there

I don't quite understand who can access the large food stores actually on Sukhumvit if there are road blocks on Sukhumvit. I am particularly thinking of Tesco and Big C in Pattaya Tai. Once you go on Sukhumvit road from Jomtien to go to one of these stores will you need all your documentation to get back into the enclosed areas or will it be possible to access them from Theprassit via the discount store complex and from Pattaya Tai round the back of Big C. I don't know exactly which sois will be open. For the time being I will probably go to one of the stores in the lockdown area rather than get caught out or stuck in a queue.

Worked for me well yesterday evening. Used Internet Explorer (You can still use IE even with Windows 10. You don't have to use Edge. On my computer it is under Windows accessories in the start menu). The Immigration site was very slow loading but sped up after office hours. Once I got to the 90 day section it was remarkably responsive and right up to printing the acknowledgement.
Well worth a shot before spending hours in huddled in the queues although I am told at Jomtien they have segregated the 90 dayers from other people and you can go straight to the 90 day desk with no wait. May not be so easy at other offices.

I watched is video on YouTube yesterday. He was contrite, took responsibility for his decision to defer getting insurance and at no point asked for money. The report in this thread says someone else set up the GoFundMe. Maybe he knew about it, maybe he does not. Maybe he is happy to accept the money. We do not know.
But what struck me on YouTube was that almost all the comments were commiserating with him about the cancer and offering moral support. Ok this thread is not a direct response to him but there is precious little compassion for someone with cancer here
Get well soon and know many of us who have been through this cancer business are with him

Wonderful trip, wish I could do it!
Once or twice you got a bit lost. Can you get as good SatNav as you do in Thailand?

mosquitoes" found in bug zappers are actually non-biting insects called midges
I don't know where you come from but the Scottish midge assuredly does bite and their swarms drive people crazy
Perhaps their tropical cousins are more benign

The fan and UV light machine I had was perfectly useless. Looked inside every month and v few dead insects of any variety
I have a UV light and electric coil that zaps them. A bit more effective as you do see defunct mossies on the electric coil
I can no longer find the blue mats for the electric mats
I do have electric ARS and liquid devices. Difficult to say how effective they are. I still got bitten
About a month ago I installed fly screen doors and sealed all the smaller windows with fly scree gauze. Almost 100% effective and I hardly ever get bitten now but obviously a bit extreme and more expensive
The fogging man comes once a month fogging outside but really I don't know that makes any difference
Wouldn't use smoke coils inside. I suspect they are toxic

I was looking in Villa today and there were Norbet pre-cooked turkeys. In Central there were Thai raised Turkeys. I don't know the quality of either?
Pantomime.
