  1. NanLaew---The moderator made things right for this struggling old geezer to have his little moan.It also provided grumpy old men perhaps  with  grave real complaints to forgive the odd accidental press of "send" to the wrong place with the necessery  obligatory bit of sarcasm

  2. angkok bank Jomtien----you will need a certificate of residence from immigration and they wont open an account on a short term visa—I needed an additional account earlier this year and walked away when they also wanted some deposit which could not be touched,

I opened an account at Kasikorn Jomtien –needed the residence cert and of course the long term visa—I seem to recall also a minimum deposit of 15.ooo—but this could be used right away –atm card

Things may have changed at either bank but I think you should anticipate the requirements.

  3. Last night a farang paid for the complete bar staff to leave a Jomtien bar and go back to his rented house to party.

Eye witness reports that about 15 girls were cavorting naked or semi-naked in the house pool at about 5 in the morning.

I personally heard the shrill excited screaming going on  --some voices definetly deeper than the majority --bar must have some lady-boys.

The host farang--nationality perhaps Irish but not certain - was in the midst of the pool splash -"looking happy"and having a

    good deal of attention.

So once again we see that Jomtien is the "up and coming" place for the not so cheap Charlies.

I assure you this is not "Fake News"

  4. Went yesterday. to Pattaya City. Had X-ray, injection, plenty of meds .Nice lady doctor, and friendly very competent staff .In and out in just over 2 hours

Bill was 1224 .Have not been there for a long time --maybe I was lucky but I arrived at 9.30 and got through the initial stages pretty fast, even though it was quite busy

I have had very good experience at Sri Racha government hospital too.

  5. 3Days ago I went to my local Bangkok bank in order to open a savings account. After an hour or so I was told that as I have a one year visa I could open an account with either an embassy letter or an immigration certificate of residence. As it happened I had both with me but they were not acceptable as they were not recent. If I got a new embassy letter I could open an account with only 1000 baht plus the atm card charge—however if I got a new immigration letter I had to open with a minimum of 7000—BUT only 1000 of that could be withdrawn—the 60000 being held “For insurance”. I demurred and was told that other banks were even stricter.

I have accounts at TMB but I needed a different account for a particular purpose.

Later that day I opened an account at Kasikorn with new immigration letter, 10,000 and atm fee.

  6. Keep getting this " Bad Gateway" when trying to get to site used in the past --- schoenerferneher.

    Thanks for any gen.

Thanks for the post .I had seen and read the official website with the statement of 500 baht before visiting the branch. That is why I believed i was being given the runaround.

My son, dual nationality, later the same day of course only needed the 500 to open an account there. I asked him to ask about the 10,000 for foreigners rule and he said that it was correct if no work permit.

It was after that that I had the online chat. Clearly a rule has been brought in but not entered on the website.

No real logic is involved --but its their bank.

  8. Any accountant or lawyer would point out to you that your shareholding does not help the business and you must recognise that it does not protect any investment you may have made in any way. The opening of an account which requires only one signature, not yours, is dangerous for anyone involved except the company director. If you want to help your friend then go talk to an accountant and do not go to any bank meetings. Best of luck,be careful !!

  9. Kitten Kong

Gosh ! why didnt I think of that?

Seriously- I thought I was being lied to and I didnt like it. I didnt need the account--

funilly enough I did go the atm there and withdrew the necessary {from a different bank] then going back in --but

why give them the chance to laugh at the silly old farang-depositing 20 times the required amount simply because he is

told to do so -- as the old News of The World reporters did I made my excuses and left, telephoning my son to do the business himself.

  10. Khun BENQ

The chat was on line with the official k bank website where you are invited to contact them by phone , email or ,as in this case live on-line chat--so I am of the opinion that the rules about savings accounts probably do include the 10,000 amount which was the point of my original post.

I tried to open an account for my son--his employer asked for K bank account for salary payment. I have several bank accounts here, some going back 25 years and I just was astonished to be told what was necessary to open a simple savings account--I frankly didnt believe the smiling lady assuring me that that was the case.

My son has dual nationality{ and the same name as me} so it was no problem for him to open the account himself--which he did later the same day at the same branch--with a deposit of 600 and 400 for the atm.

So one cannot always be correct in assuming that the Thai service personell are giving you duff gen.

I do wonder if Id gone to a different K bank branch if the same requirements would be stipulated--???

  11. An update showing some chat with K bank------------- james: I am retired, with a long stay retirement visa. The branch asked me to show bank books from other accounts with Thai banks which I did, then was told The minimum amount was 10,000 baht plus 400 for an atm card plus 199 for something else
    Chaleeya: yes, sir.
Chaleeya: if you are retired person, the minimum deposit is 10,000 THB.
Chaleeya: 500 THB is for person who apply with work permit.
Chaleeya: but if you have ATM card, you can withdraw the fund that you deposited.
james: What dos yes sir mean--is your website whuch states 500 as the minimum incorrect or are you saying that a savings account needs a minimum starting deposit of 10,000?
Chaleeya: if you look up at the websit, 500THB deposit is for person who open the account with work permit condition.
Chaleeya: but if you are retired person which means you do not have work permit, to open the saving account requires 10,000 as the minimum deposit.
james: I emphasise that it is a SAVINGS account.

I gave up at this point

  12. Today in Jomtien on trying to open an account at the K bank I was told that they required immigration letter for address proof, or alternatively sight of an updated bank book from any other Thai bank. I presented the latter and was then handed a note detailing the deposit requirement of 10,000 baht plus charges for atm card and something else{illegible} totalling 599 baht. They insisted that this is a minimum requirement for new foreign customers. I asked if this was head office policy and they said yes and that the regulation for the minimum came into effect last year.

Can any readers comment on the veracity. Thanks.

P.S. My Thai citizen son opened an account with them later today---he needs it for work purposes--he put in 600 baht deposit and paid 400 for the atm card.

  13. The Saturday Cryptic is always difficult for most of us but today's is not helped by an error in the clues. Specifically the clue for 21 down is incorrect in stating the number of letters ;words, as 2, 10 I am sure it should read 4,3,5. Tip--the answer surely starts with the letter H

Just thought to help anyone struggling as I was.

  14. Newbie--

After the first late payment --":your payments will start showing in your account every 4 weeks" quote from the DWP letter about late payments.---banking provider is Citibank. Payments seem now to all be on a Tuesday rather than Monday previously
Could it be that your 4 weekly payment is due next week?

  15. You need to ring Overseas Pensions { 44] 01912187777. You will then wait till a relevant number--I think its 3. they ask

press the approptiate number I think its 3 to speak to the right person. They will ask you security questions--have your national insurance number ready.

  16. My payment came in today--just one day later than normal. Thai Military Bank by the way has a very good online account system

I rang Overseas Pensions the other day and had a"senior moment ' in answering the "security" questions

The lady gave me a brief second chance and then concluded the session by saying that the the line was very bad and would i please call back--which I didn't--just waited for the payment to come.
