You can also stay in Prum, the village right behind the border on the Cambodian side. Places to stay in Prum.

The village right at the border on the Thai side is Baan Pakhad. The last town is Pong Nam Ron, this is where you turn off 317 and head east to the border. I drive myself so I do not know about public transport. It is about 240km from Pattaya to the border. I do not know how safe Pailin is compared to other places but it is not a high crime area. Places to stay in Pailin.

Baan pakhad is the crossing of choice for most runners. Takes about 3.5 hours by car (235 km). Few people at the border in the early afternoon when the minibusses have left.

How about final work on the 331 widening project? Have been in US since mid-March. Is it done yet? Looks like they have committed a lot of resources to the 7 project.
The new carriageway is paved pretty much the whole lenght. The bridge over the rail road 1 km north of the intersection with 332 is not built yet. The intersection with 36 is not upgraded to accommodate the new carriageway. Traffic is not directed on to the new carriageway but you can drive on it.

On the road out of Hue Yai going east before the 331.
On the Phoenix Road going East after Chack Neow but before the 331
On the back road from Hue Yai to the Phoenix road a small village has sprung up for the workers, this part will be the spur across to Ocean Marina
Land has been cleared at all points and there is batching plants, pre cast concrete facilities, offices, rows of new pick up trucks and new construction equipment.
Thanks.

I do a bit of enduro riding and they have started work on most locations in the map last few months.....think it's a pretty stupid idea as they should have built an overhead all the way through pattaya...gonna mess up a nice area in marpachan as well ....that <deleted> tunnel must be the most retarded design ever !!!...they are already doubling up the 331 so could have used that for industrial traffic...I am really getting so sick of the mess that is pattaya ?
Can you point me to some places where the work on the 7 extension has started? I have only seen one place yet and it is here.

Check how many casualties there is on an average day first.

To get the Cambodia VISA you walk across the border, which consists of a small bridge. The Cambodian immigration with VISA on arrival is on the right side of the road 100 meters passed the bridge.

I went to Ban Pakhad myself the other day. They are constructing new buildings on the Thai side. The border is open 06:00-22:00.
The "fixer" service is not worth it anymore. There used to be a small cafe where you could sit and have a drink in shade while the fixers filled out all your papers, including the Thai immigration form, and went over to the Cambodian side to stamp you in and out. This used to cost 200 baht, not very cheap but if there were lines and you were tired it was worth it. Now the cafe is gone and they want 400 baht! I paid 1300 baht for the Cambodian VISA for which the fixers wanted 1700.
Also noted that there is a new Hotel/Casino on the Cambodian side named Grand JM Hotel.

Hi, do you think that they have good hotels on the cambodia side if I want to stay overnight ?
Thanks.
There are (or used to be) two bigger hotels. Diamond Crown Hotel and Ceasar Hotel.

Okay thank you all very much for your help
Once inside Cambodia can I stay for a quick look around or a beer, is there anything there?
just got to find Baan Pakhad now.
Its all good experience.
Yes you can stay, as a matter of fact they may charge you an extra fee for not staying. There is one casino to the right just passed the border called Dream world Casino. There is also a nice little duty free shop called Triplets if you take the road to the left opposite the Dream world casino. You can walk to the duty free but you get a free ride if you ask the Cambodians at the border. Beer can be found in various places.

A pen, bribes and photos are essential items when travelling these parts for sure
do I need any paperwork or just my passport?
No other paperwork is needed.

Okay, great, thank you for all your quick responses.
Ideally I want to do an overnight trip out of U-Tapao but my clothes may be in binbags all over my garden on my return
I will look into all your suggestions, I think driving to Baan Pakhad seems my best option so far. I always worry about handing over my passport to `fixers` who may leg it with my passport.
Never done one after coming to Thailand for 10 years, bit paranoid doing it on my own for some reason.
Is it easy and can I be sure to be allowed back in ?
what are the opening times for Baan Pakhad?
The fixers will not leg it but if you are worried then do the paper work etc yourself.
Bring passport photos.
You can be sure to be let back in.
The border is open to at least 6 PM.

Drive to Baan Pakhad, this is the nearest border crossing, 230km from Bang Saray. The crossing is very small so walking across is easy. If you pay the fixers sitting just past Thai immigration they do the paper work and walk over stamp you in and out.

To the OP please do not get disconcerted by your experience. Please remember that all banks and businesess are controlled by the so called Thai elite. They are not just out to screw you but the rest of the population and have done so for a long long time. As a foreigner you may be disgruntled but please show some compassion for the millions of Thais, especially in the North and North East who have been abused and used by the Bangkok Elite for centuries.
Aren't the Thais in the North and North-East the ones that votes for parties like Thai Ruk Thai?

Motorbike taxis make up their prices as they see fit at the moment. Better you make your own map with zones and rates that is acceptable to some local driver hanging in the area of your restaurant. Or like the last poster said, deal with WOW or Door2Door.

AA Pattaya Ville have small kitchens in the rooms on the ground floor. Daily and monthly rate. WiFi, A/C and Pool. The place opened around new year so pretty new. On a boring back street, motorbike recommended.
