  1. Cyber extortion ring busted in Philippines
    May 02, 2014 3:27PM
DOZENS of people have been arrested in the Philippines for their involvement in a giant, global Internet "sextortion" network, local police and Interpol say. Victims have been lured by people posing as attractive, young women into giving sexually explicit photos or videos of themselves online, then blackmailed sometimes repeatedly for thousands of dollars, the authorities said at a joint press conference in Manila on Friday. The 58 arrested in the Philippines were just a small part in an expanding global phenomenon that is being fuelled by the explosion of social media, the director of Interpol's Digital Crime Centre, Sanjay Virmani said. "The scale of this extortion network is massive," Virmani said. Philippine police chief Alan Purisima said the 58 Filipinos arrested would be charged over a range of crimes, including engaging in child pornography, extortion and using technologies to commit fraud. He said authorities from the US, Hong Kong, Interpol, Scotland, Singapore and Australia last year established "Operation Strikeback", which led to the 58 arrests. The joint taskforce was created at an Interpol meeting to tackle the "growing number of sextortion victims in Hong Kong, Indonesia, Singapore, the Philippines, the United Kingdom and the United States", according to Purisima. He said the taskforce was also focused on potential victims in Australia, South Korea and Malaysia. Purisima said the scam typically involved the fake woman making contact with people overseas via Facebook and other social media, then seeking to establish a relationship with them. "After getting acquainted with the victims ... they engage in cybersex, and this will be recorded unknown to the victims," he said. "They then threaten to release it to friends and relatives." Purisima said victims paid between hundreds or thousands of dollars, sending payments via money transfer remittance companies. Detective Chief Inspector Gary Cunningham from the Scottish police force said one 17-year-old in Scotland had committed suicide after being extorted. More than 530 people in Hong Kong, many aged between 20 and 30, have fallen victim to the scam since the beginning of last year, according to Chief Inspector Louis Kwan, from Hong Kong police. He said victims had paid up to $US15,000 ($A16,230) in desperate attempts to keep the sexually compromising material private. Kwan said some victims paid up to three times before going to the police, "when they realised they could no longer afford to continue paying". Authorities emphasised the Philippines was not the hub of the global "sextortion" scams, only that the current investigation had focused on the Southeast Asian nation. "These crimes are not limited to any one country and nor are the victims. That's why international cooperation in investigating these crimes is essential," Interpol's Virmani said.

  2. According to Göteborgs-Posten is yesterday's shooting the eleventh in the Bishop's Palace in 2014. But police do not believe that the suspected murder has any connections with the gang-related shootings .- Without this , we consider that there is any other motive . All others have been outdoors and this is a different kind of modus, says Peter Adlersson.

11 shootings in one place in sweden in 2014? is that a correct translation?if so, sweden isnt what i thought it was! perhaps a migrant area?

having worked for bt police uk..which the job was to study ctv footage on crimes..looking at the 2 photo they are not the same man...

the one on the left is bigger in kilo than the right..would never get a conviction in the uk on thet photo

you are making one critical wrong assumption that the article actually bears any resemblance to reality., but thanks for elucidating why it is invariably the british who get a hard time at thai embassies in the region.

  5. Thanks Wacoal for your information. As I advised AyG, I have narrowed my list down to a few species.

    Regarding your information:

    1. I will list ROSE APPLE as the most common term for Chompuu.

    2. I think I will leave this as it would cause too much confusion with the current list.

    3. I will indicate LUUK CHOMPUU as chompuu fruit (otherwise there would be too many inclusions).

Regarding the tones, at the moment I am writing this in simple Thai for non-speaking readers. I have had a lengthy discussion on this, under the heading K and G in Thai.

I use the Thai-language.com dictionary often, but thank you for that.

ok there is also http://lexitron.nectec.or.th/2009_1/ just in case you missed this resource

    out good luck

  8. i like the bit about stealing a bicycle. see how high the fence/gate is? hes going to be lifting that bicycle single handed over that locked gate. cambos arent known to be tall either

bicycles dont have any face value in cambo perspective, perhaps even the opposite, and surely there are better pickings/choices in a suburb full of grossly overpaid international NGOs

cambos are renowned for pilfering stuff from a crime scene/accident after the event so if the bicycle is missing it was more likely first responders/observers who took it AFTER the gate was opened.

who did it? who can pin the blame on a holier than than when there are ample errant no faced poors around to fall at will.

  9. Several of the posts seem to put a high value on the woman being educated, having a basic university degree, or higher, and/or having a professional job.

The truth is that formal education and professional achievement have no bearing on the success of a relationship. If it did, PhD's, lawyers, MD's, and CEO's would have great marriages.

A Thai woman with a university degree working in an office who wants a farang is just as likely to be a gold digger, or worse, as a bar girl who wants to marry a farang.

It's not a guarantee, but in Thailand if you have a university degree, almost by definition that means that you're from a family that's a lot better off than the average. That in turn means there are fewer 'emergencies' or the type of crap that tends to befall the lower regions of society. (Mostly related to money, but sometimes including gambling, boneheaded investments and debt, no-good brothers or other crap). (Or, it means you've worked your butt off and been really good to get that degree, which is also good. Either way it's not the degree itself, although a degree is the only thing that will land you a decent job in Thailand.)

Yes, of course they can still be gold diggers, but you're less likely to immediately get stuck in *actual* financial needs.

And then secondly people with a university degree (assuming you're educated to a similar level) would be more likely to share a similar outlook and aspiration in life to yourself. But that's probably the lesser point to the first one.

And then thirdly, if a person is a bit higher class to begin with instead of falling into a middle class through a relationship, they seem less likely to be overly class-conscious to the point they want to put down anyone they perceive as (now) 'below' them, and shop for 'bling' to show off. That's really annoying in a relationship. But if a you as a Thai person start off a bit higher then you're less insecure about that and don't really care what people think, which is a good thing in a relationship with a foreigner. (This is mostly based on single anecdotal evidence though smile.png ). But it does seem likely, that a sort of 'nouveau riche' concept applies; those people tend to be way more obnoxious than people for whom money never was much of an issue, and feel less need to continuously flaunt it (shopping! bigger car than their friends!) and put down others to the point of not even want to be seen with people they perceive as lesser. I hate that attitude, and puts a different kind of pressure on your social life, because as a foreigner you will have foreign friends, and those friends will have married bar & farm girls and the like. Then it's seriously un-cool if your wife doesn't want to be caught dead in that sort of company regardless of who those girls are as a person.

can you tell us what is perceived as the single most undesirable common characteristic of "bar & farm girls and the like" (besides not voting democratcheesy.gif )
