  1. Big bike riders don't need to honk their horns. They annoy car drivers for EXISTING, and refusing to acknowledge their place is as close to the gutter as possible.

I should make it clear that I am absolutely PRO motorcycling having ridden big bikes for every one of 45 years.

You say big bikes place is as close to the gutter as possible. This shows your complete lack of knowledge regarding motorcycling. I'm a qualified Motorcycle Instructor (with 46 years experience riding and racing motorbikes) and one of the most basic rules taught to students when riding on the road is position yourself so you can see and be seen. That means sometimes moving out towards the centre line to gain a better view of the road ahead should there be a bend in the road or an obstruction. It also means moving into a more central position in the roads when approaching a junction so any drivers (of any vehicle) can see you approaching.

There's also something we remind all students on both large or small bikes, that is, ride in the gutter and you'll be treated like the rest of the crap that ends up there.

  2. OK, I know there are a few threads on here for buying turf but they're all a few years old now and talk about Malay turf. I'm looking for somewhere that does some good quality turf with fine blades of grass. I know it's available from somewhere in Pattaya, my next door neighbour had some laid at the beginning of the year. Unfortunately he isn't around now until after Christmas and my pool will be finished in the next few weeks and I want to get the garden landscaped before I head off on my next Project at the end of October.

Does anyone know where I can buy this good quality, fine grass turf in Pattaya? I've tried to weekend market on Sukhumvit but they only had the coarse (Malay I think) turf there.

    Any help appreciated!

  3. why not just get an international DL in your home country before you come here, can you not just turn it in and get a thai DL without test?

Not always as easy as that for us nomads, I've not been back to the UK for a few years and that's the only place they will issue me with an International Driving Licence (I've asked in PNG, Malawi and Zimbabwe).

In answer to the OP, I think it probably depends on where you apply. I can say that here in Pattaya I got a 1 year driving licence whilst I was on a Visa Exemption. I got a letter from the Guest House I was staying in to say that was my residence. I didn't have any issues whatsoever at the licence office, I didn't even have to sit the theory test...........I guess I got them on a good day biggrin.png

  4. Well, I got my Non-Immigrant O, "Retirement Visa" and Mulit-Entry Permit yesterday through a Visa Agent thumbsup.gif . Very painless and very easy, dropped my passport/photos/bank book off with them on Tuesday, got it all back yesterday.

Whilst there are many knowledgeable people on here and I appreciate the advice received, going direct to the Agent and explaining my circumstances was by far the best and easiest thing to do. OK, I had to pay for the privilege but for me, it was well worth it.

Incidentally, I think someone mentioned you must have 15 days left on your visa exemption to be eligible to apply, mine was due to expire on the 5th August, only 8 days from when I gave the documents to the Agent.

  5. Who mentioned guarantee? I spoke about authenticity and it's from Antwerp, one of the homes of diamonds.

All products have a profit margin, if you don't like your car does a dealer give you the same price you paid for it? Some won't even offer you a deal, I know, I worked for both car and motorbike dealerships.

I don't know of any jewellery shops in the UK that would let you exchange a diamond ring for something of the same or similar retail value, if you try to swap almost any product you're going to get trade value.

That's not the fault of the seller, it's business.

  6. I was in there a few weeks ago with my wife, she was looking at diamond rings. I questioned their authenticity so the lady went off to get the Certification for the ring in question. They let me take a photo of the certificate so I could follow-up the supplier in Antwerp.

Not everywhere is a rip-off in Thailand but I agree you do have to be careful

  7. Great place on Thepprasit road, easy to spot and park

I got a BBQ from here a few months ago, almost BBQ in the shop was reduced so don't go by the prices on the website, it's definitely worth dropping in and having a look. These are also good quality ones that will last for years. I had a Weber when I lived in Holland about 20 years ago, it stayed outside (covered) all the time. My ex-wife still has this and uses it maybe once a year. Always worth paying that little bit extra for quality.

  8. Unfortunately there are quite a few guys like this here but on the flipside, I've also met quite a few guys who have invaluable snippets of info to make life here easier.

Life isn't perfect, you've just got to get on with it, it's also too short to let people wind you up and stress you out. Smile at people like this and walk away....

  9. I travel almost every month and never use the public taxi's at BKK airport. I've used Mr T for almost 2 years now, Patts to BKK THB900, from BKK to Patts THB1000 both fares include the Tolls. In the 2 years I've never been let down by this Service.

  10. Thanks for the various replies. I went to a Visa Agency today, sat with them face to face and explained my situation. They said they are getting more clients who work offshore but are now concerned about the new legislation. Anyway, the Agency are doing all the work for me and have assured me I will have my passport, with relevant visas/permits back in 2 days. If I had a K-Bank Account, it would have been the same day.

They will apply for a Non-Immigrant O Visa and the Retirement (O-A I believe) Visa, as well as the Multi-Entry permit.

What my question has shown is how many different views and perceptions there are on the visa process/requirements. For something as important as this, I'd definitely recommend going straight to immigration or an Agency, speak to people who are in the know about current legislation.

Thanks again to everyone who took the time to answer me.

  11. If I understand correctly, you have to apply in the province where you reside.

You are confusing a multi-entry visa, with a re-entry permit. When you convert your visa exempt status to a non-immigrant O visa, that visa is only valid for 60 days. Provided that all your paperwork is in order (income verification and/or bank letter and bank book, or a combination of the two), the conversion and issuance of the O visa occurs simultaneously (at least here in Chon Buri). You then submit the application for a re-entry permit based on the extended O visa.

It can all be done in one day at the Jomtien office - a long day to be sure - but one day nonetheless.

The frustrating thing is, I will be going off on the next project at the start of September so I don't actually need a non-immigrant O visa until I come back at the end of the year when I'll be here for a couple of months again and I can apply for that and also the necessary long-stay visas. So another visa exemption would have been OK to see me through to the start of September but I'm not sure if it's worth the risk of being refused entry.....

  12. I'm currently here on a visa exemption, I work offshore most of the time but have now been waiting here in Pattaya for the last 2 months whilst the next project is secured by my Company. I did a 3 day trip to Vietnam at the beginning of July but with the new regulations, I'm not sure I would be permitted to do this again for another visa exemption stamp.

I'm over 50 so am eligible for a "retirmement" visa (I know that's not the correct terminology before I get pelters from certain folk here), I have a letter from my Company saying I get paid X amount per month in GBP but this is paid into my UK Account, not my Thai one.

My current visa exemption expires on 4th August and I will be heading off on the next project in September when I'll be away for 6 weeks, would I:

    1. Still be able to travel outside Thailand for a few days and come back in to get a visa exemption (this is a new passport with 2 stamps in it, my old passport only had 1 "visa-run").

    2. Be better getting a Non-Immigration O Visa (but I need multi-entry). I understand I would have to go to BKK and get an affidavit from the UK Embassy confirming my income.

    3. If I go for the above option, should I do it myself or get an Agent to do it on my behalf and therefore avoid any potential delays (as the visa exemption expires on 4th Aug)

    Helpful advice would be appreciated.

  13. Sooooo many people jumping on the bandwagon and making assumptions. Don't get me wrong, anyone that shows off to his mates when he's riding a bike (especially around Town), gets what they deserve, no matter what Nationality they are.

Everyone assumes because he was 20 years old he had no experience, really? I started riding bikes at 6 years old and raced motocross for 10 years before I moved onto circuit racing. There are kids aged 12 or 13 years old now racing in Championship rounds in different parts of the World.

I'm not defending this guy and anyone that rides at high speed around Town gets what they deserve but too many people instantly form an opinion that is often not based on fact.

Incidentally, a Superbike is normally seen as a 1000cc eg. World Superbikes, British Superbikes, the majority are 1000cc in-line 4 cylinder machines, twins and triples can have an increased capacity to meet the regs. But with a 600cc bike now capable of speeds around 160/170mph, most bikes from 600cc upwards shouldn't be ridden by someone without the relevant experience.

I hope the guy with the broken leg recovers quickly and this Russian gets hammered with a huge fine. If it's found he doesn't have a licence, the bike rental company should also be punished.

  14. For those across on the Darkside, I would recommend The Fisherman's Cafe up near the Lake. They also do a good delivery service. I send them a SMS with my order and address and they call back to confirm both. They also ask how spicy I want the food, 30 minutes later it's deliver to the house.

I've been to the restaurant quite a few times too, never had a bad meal there or from the delivery service. My family were across from Scotland for 3 weeks at Xmas/New Year, they also ate at Fisherman's and were impressed with the food.

The setting isn't bad either, especially in the evening when the sun's setting.

As with most of the restaurants around the lake though, the flies are a bloody nuisance!
