Not sure about the education bit but if anyone tries to apply power to one of those cogs there will be an almighty mess.

Good Point Harry!! I was about to write something similar....like this will cause a jam..but..what if whoever did the picture is good in mechanics and was trying to convey, this system as shown wont work...you need to take one of the wheels out of the equation..probably the poor student??!! tongue.png
No no - you folks and your two-dimensional thinking. You need to raise one of the gears along the Z axis so that it's much higher than the others. Obviously the parents must be higher than the students and teachers.

Mmmmmm...think again. Raise only one??? It works??

the responsibility of the parents and schools together…

Most Thai kids have access to internet and have computers or mobile devices. They spend hours per day using them. Even the relative poor have fancier mobile devices than I have. The problem is that these machines are used for entertainment purposes only, which is like a new opiate for the masses. It's, in my opinion, the responsibility of the parents and schools together to not only use applications but also to create them. Even a simple spreadsheet with your school marks would do. Or a simple web blog with your holiday pictures. Activate those brain synapses you lazy rascals!

Do the test yourself. Show the picture below to a Thai student and ask him/her what they think about it.

  3. Took a motor cycle taxi from Asok to go to Pratunam market last Sunday. The guy asked for 120 Baht and I paid it. While coming back took the yellow/green cab and paid as per the meter, which was just 65 Baht!!! to my surprise. I thought the motor cycles are cheaper option. Looks like not necessarily. Any advice when to take motor cycle taxi and when not to?? Does one need to negotiate with the motor cycle taxi operators upfront??

  4. 10 years ago Walking Street was full of American / European / Scandanavian / Australian people. Now it's full of Indian / Arab / Chinese people.

Maybe that is the answer to your question OP.

You mean...it is restricted to people with some spending power tongue.png

  5. Can't make it, something is shaking here I must attend.

Someone asked me today if I was heading to the grand opening of, "The Enlarged Prostate".

I must admit I had no idea of what he was talking about.

I hope there will be wheelchair access for our zimmer frame users, with a ramp from the soi and the loos provided.

It seems this opportunity appeals more to the juvenile delinquents amongst us than to pillars of society and wisdom, like you and I.

Perhaps if Ian Forbes was invited as a headline guest appearance, more might be minded to attend...

I can see the head of the Church of Scotland having a go at me for that....

Thanks Guru (savant?). My vocabulary of English has improved with learning the meaning of 2 words....debauchery and savant....Keep it coming......Queens English.....ha?? I am going to unleash these new words (at least for me) on my unsuspecting colleagues promptly. :)

Just another example of the violence that lays just below the surface in 'The Land of Smiles' . Can't wonder at it when every day and night the kids play violent video games or watch Thai soaps containing violence in every other scene. That is when they are not on Facebook !

"Land of Smiles"??? I thought so, till I saw this incidence in Sukumvit between Soi 11 n 15 last week. A couple of hawkers were assaulting a farang (50+) and his wife was trying to defend the husband. I think the dispute started over some haggling on the prices of wares sold. The husband was bleeding and was trying to run away and the attackers were chasing him and holding him and hitting him. His wife also got hit a couple of times. All the time the man was saying...sorry..sorry..forgive me....take the money you want and leave me...but to no respite.

There were many on lookers and no one was intervening (Including me). It was a total shock for me to see that Thai people can behave so violently. I am in Thailand for close to 7 months now and this was the first incident i witnessed. It left me soooo shaken, even till day, I keep wondering could I have done something differently to help the poor man. May be I could have called the tourist police??!!

Let this be a lesson for you...choose your arguments wisely...the Thais do not fight fair...they do not fight alone...and are not given to stop beating a foreigner until he is subdued...many incidents over price of goods...some foreigners have been badly hurt...I personally believe this is tied to a barely contained smoldering resentment of foreigners in general...doesn't take much to bring it to the surface...

    Is it so?? I thought the incident that i witnessed, was one off!!! An exception. I keep hearing that Thailand is a friendly place and people are quite polite and sweet. Even otherwise, in my work place and in most other public places, I see people to be polite and respectful and sweet. I hope, I stay here long enough to share some of the pleasant experiences like our Norfolk Fox here. {Of course, minus a Thai wife since my wife of 17 yrs is sweet and smart and we do have the usual quota of arguments that any married couple encounter. But, that is what marriage is all about, right? ..giving and taking ;)}

  9. Rather amazing that something like 80% of respondents so far - apparently eager to attend - have less than 50 Posts.

"Just saying" (I hate that phrase!).

I hope to make it, there are many TV Members I would like to meet and put a face to a name.

    Patrick

There was another topic on "You know you are retired........." can't help but reply here....

When you do a statistical analysis of respondents/No,of posts/eagerness to attend.....on "invitation to the grand opening of TVLB" ??? post-4641-1156694572.gif.pagespeed.ce.33

  10. What is the way to go if I don't pass the colour blind test (I know I will not pass the ishihara test although I see red and green separetely as I recognize all other colours) ? Hiring a chauffeur ? Pass over money ?

I have 40 years driving experience without one single incident in Switzerland. I have a Swiss licence and an international permit.

In colour Blindness test, remember this...no Orange or Amber. You have to call it yellow, apart from the universal Red n Green.

  11. My first reaction was to moan about it, then after a few years laugh about it, now I know the way the average Thai thinks is very different from the way the average Westerner thinks. It's a cultural thing due to the Buddhism, IMHO. Thai people don't care if the person they meet is late as they a lot more comfortable enjoying the moment than Westerners, who are not taught "samadtee" or meditative techniques at school.

They will reply, "I am here 'now'", so what's the problem.

They are actually right as time IS an illusion.

My mrs used to think like you until one day she rocked up at Don Muang and was told the flight has gone already.

Any problems take it up with Thai Airways, sorry we cant keep the flight on hold until you and your upcountry shitkicker cousins decide its ok to rock up here, just coz you decided to stop off for a gobfull of som tam en route.

Just read your post and the face thread as well, and had a funny thought

Imagine a thai person is catching a flight and decides to turn up whenever they feel like it and get told the flight closed 45 minting ago

If they follow the true concept of face, they Dont lose their temper, they keep their composure even though they have been ripped off, while the airline staff don't tell them that their flight has already gone so the.customer doesn 't lose face in front of their friends

And so they all.just stand there, one side thinking the plane is still open, while the other side just hopes they go away and become.someone else.problem!

Hahahaha.....Hahahaha....still laughing as I write this. "so the.customer doesn 't lose face in front of their friends" & "they go away and become.someone else.problem!" These are more serious issues for me which is just too much to cope up with here. Have you noticed, there is no hierarchy (which works in actual terms) which is very effective here? Coz...the manager doesn't want to hurt the feelings of his subordinate...who made a blunder....so he never pull them up...and things never improve.

  12. My wife is Thai and she is always on time. Her business associates are always on time. I went to immigration yesterday and they opened on time. I had an appointment with the doctor and he was on time. I have Thai TV and all the programs today were on time. I have a Thai dog and every day at exactly 4 PM she comes to the front door to wait for her food.

If anyone would look at an average day in Thailand I think they will find most things happen on time.

Agree..I find except for few rare happenings...mostly people coming for interviews arrive on time, the staff in office are on time, client (Thai) is always ready when you go to meet them with prior appointment. Whats all the fuss about??!!

  13. I went to Mo-Chit today to get my Thailand driving license (This is my first one, valid for a year). I have an India driving license and also an International driving permit. I wanted to get licenses to drive a motor car as well as a motor cycle (geared). The information was on second floor. The guy could speak decent English and explained me that if I want licenses for a car as well as for a bike, then I need to prepare 2 sets of documents....the documents he asked me are as follows..

Photocopy of the passport (Front, last, visa page)

Photocopy of the Work Permit (Front page where there is Photo and pages that are filled...(dont know what it says till date as the script is Thai)

Photocopy of my India License (Front n back)

Photcopy of my International Driving Permit (Pages where there is photo, where the permit says what u can drive and what u cannot, translation page in English). I think since I flaunted it he asked for a photocopy of the same...I don’t think it is necessary at all.

Medical Certificate (I did not have one so the chap at information told me to go out and ask any motorcycle taxi and they will help. The Moxi promptly took me to the medic, who verified the documents and asked me if I am perfectly fit for which I answered in affirmative and asked me, showing two pens which are red and green in colour, what colour they are...i remembered my nursery school days and answered correctly. He took THB 80 and issued the certificate..the Moxi ride cost me another THB 80 for up n down)

Armed with all above (2 sets(Only if you want to drive 2 diff. vehicles) photocopied at ground floor and self-attested) again approached the information counter at second floor. He verified all the documents and gave me a token. There are separate counters for foreigners. On being called my documents were once again verified and then few slips got attached to the bunch then I was asked to go to 3rd floor for "Physical"!!!! Test. On 3rd floor again I was given a token and made to sit for about 15 minutes. There was a video informing the candidates (both in Thai and English) what the tests, we were about to undergo is all about.

Then on being called I went for the tests...there is no separate special treatment for forigners here....

The first test is for colour blindness...a lady keet pressing a sort of remote control the kids use to play and the traffic signal lights up..showing diff colours randomly and you have to call the colour correctly. I said, Red...Red...Amber...green...Amber...green. The lady made me sit in a separate place while letting others go. After a few minutes another gentleman from Korea joined me when the world went about its business around us. After making us, sweat for few minutes...she grandly declared we failed the test.!!! We both were shocked as we knew we called the colours correctly. She said she will give us one more chance (I was listening in the mean time the Thai calling the colours...Red...Red...Yellow..Green..Yellow..Red..which made me realise what the issue was). I told my other partner in crime, next time dont say Amber or Orange...say...yellow..he too got the drift. In the second attempt we both passed the test with flying COLOURS. The lady looked at both of us disapprovingly and scolded us...there is not Amber or Ornage in Thailand...IT IS YELLOW.

The seond test was for depth perception (where u play with a joystick and match a pole which is about 6-8 inches in height and about 1/2 inch in thickness which slides at about 6 inches distance against a pole which is stationary. If you can match the poles within an inch of each other, you pass. The distance from where you sit the poles are about 10 feet approx. I passed this as well without any drama.

The third test was for your speed of reaction. You sit on a stool and in front of you on the floor, is a simulator with a brake and an accelerator. As you step on the accelerator, you should watch for a red light to glow on the panel in front of you. As soon as the red light, lights up you need to hit the brake. If you could react within 0.75 seconds (that is 750 milliseconds) you pass. I did. There was a girl in front of me in the queue. She tried and tried for almost 3-4 minutes and could not get it right!!! I told her.....If you want to travel in a car...you better be sitting next to me...probably this comment scared her (hvg to sit with me in the car) and she passed the test in the very next try.

The fourth one is for your wide angle vision (what they call 75 deg vision...which is your ability to see through the corner of your eyes). You are asked to press your nose to a fixture and there are 3 small LEDs (What else...Red...Green..and YELLOW only) on both sides of your face. The lady operates a remote and one of the colours lights up...you have to call the colour correctly. I was going well on my left side, where actually my vision is bad..since I had an industrial accident and lost part of the vision on my left eye...Red..Green..Green...Red..YELLOW....YELLOW). On the right side I was Red..Red...YELLOW...RED...then NOTHING..i knew the lady pressed a button but actually i could not see anything...so I said...Green..then...Red..Red..YELLOW....nothing.....i said Green. So I passed the test. (Actually I think they have to change the green LED on the right as it was emitting very low light or probably the voltage is low??) and most of the people were fumbling and some of them are getting smarter..LoL

After I came out of the test rig!!! I was again asked to go to second floor from third and collect the token again. Which I did and when my number was called went and presented the test results to the officer who took a photograph and collected the license fee (THB 205 for motor car + THB 155 for Motor Cycle) and gave me the licenses. The THB 205 has got 2 receipts...one for THB 100 and another for THB 105 and the THB 155 has got 2 receipts. One for THB 100 another for THB 55. (I feel like totally uneducated in this place!!!!).

I entered the building at 10 am and I was out with 2 licenses (they give 2 separate licenses!!!) by 11:30. So, it took me all of 1 1/2 hrs...including understanding the procedures, go to the medic and back, wait after failed test to get my licenses.

Expenses...THB 80 for medic, THB 80 for Moxi, THB 20 for photcopying, THB 360 for the licenses and my pride...having failed in any test for the first time in my life and not knowing there is no amber or orange in signals in Thailand but only YELLOW.
