Don't know the value of that old equipment or how much the old guy was making or if he will pass along the refferals......or perhaps decide to unretire.
I do know I'm hit up constantly with offers to lighten my wallet.

sorry guys but this sound like an urban legend..
.............
any confescation of the funds can only be made through a court order.
on the contrary to most Farrang legends... thailand has laws and they are enforced.
They have laws and maybe enforced, sometimes.... The real problem is that logic is not a strong point in Thailand and everybody lies in Court.
You are not Thai and she doesn't have proper paperwork. What are the chances you will get a fair shake?

Set up a trust?
Talk with a tax preparer and see what they recommend.
Look into opening an investment acct. at Charles Schwab or some other place?
They should be able to set you up, no? Make her benificary or joint acct holder or open her an account if possible.
If she ends up with a windfall upon your demise, there will be incredible pressure on her from relatives.
She will be broke in no time.
Invest and have monthly allowance automatically directed into the bank and give her an ATM Card to access.

"In the last 15 years, I've come across countless whingers who say markets are about to 'collapse', but really what they mean is 'life is not fair, I can't afford to buy anything of nice quality; all those who can must be stupid.'"
10 years ago, this project and a few hundred more were stopped in their tracks.
Won't happen again?

Don't keep your money or invest or do business in Thailand is the lesson to be learned.
Too many games.

Tawan Deang Beer House would be more memorable than some dinner in a fancy restaurant or tourist boat, no?

"the burger I ate contained a piece of metal, which appeared to be part of a gear from the meat grinder"
Another reason to avoid ground meat in Thailand.....

Pattaya is cheaper ...and as the saying goes... you get what you pay for...

I would be very carefull.
A friend bought a house and didn't realize that an auto body shop was right next door.
Bang, bang, bang,... all day long.
Apparently, the home owner got the body shop to take the week off untill the sale was done.

Just a few more screwups by the Junta is all it will take.
Thaksin will come back to save the day.
-
He was mega-rich, long before becoming Prime Minister.
Good connections, smart businessman, right place at the right time.
People that say he stole his way to the top don't know what they are talking about.
In 2003, Thai stocks were the world’s best performing, increasing 133 percent.
Thaksin and ANYBODY else heavily invested at that time doubled their money.
Has he been involved in immoral/shady activities? Of course. Is there a single public servent not exploiting their position?

For begginers:
Get closer to the subject.
Set the camera menu for higher saturation.
Use fill flash.
Consider the background.

The Peninsula Hotel is operating at 29%.
OUCH!
Things are not good.

They are just staying home.

I decided to just ship some things here on Thai Air as boat seemed to complicated. I don't know how much the weight was now, but I paid about $1500 US for shipping fees from LA to Chiang Mai. Pretty much everything was used except for the fact that I sometimes buy things and haven't had a chance to wear them yet, but I cut off all the tags, and the majority of the things were clothes, and some silverware, vases, etc. A few things I had bought in Thailand 20 years ago and was shipping back.
I was told in LA that shipping in a Thai's name was better so did that. But then the customs here made a bunch of stories that it wasn't better, and said to change it back to my name. Every day when I went there, they had some BS reason why I could not get my things that day, and were charging me storage every day. Then they said that I needed to bring my last expired passport. I did that, and everyday was a new stupid story about some paper I needed to bring, or about how they didn't have workers to put my boxes on my truck I had waiting each time.
After we had settled about 3 times on prices (bribes basically) they would change them to a higher price. The last day, the called and said "my boss is opening your boxes and I cannot control what is going to happen so can you give me 20,000 baht and I will bring them right now to your house?"
I had also told them at least 20 times, to go ahead and open my boxes, because they seemed (fake) worried that if that happened I would be screwed, when in the end I know this was total BS, they never even wanted to open the boxes, and if they had opened them, they would only find that I didn't owe them any money. This is the basic reason why my boxes sat there for 3-4 weeks and I had big storage bills.
I think they just screw you over, and they play hardball there, and there isn't much you can do about it. You have already invested the price of the stuff, and the shipping, and they know you will pay something to them rather then leaving it. I would have loved to have the satisfaction of just saying, "go ahead and keep it all and go <deleted> yourself" but most of the things I really cared about were photos and things I cannot replace.
Although I would have loved to have more of my things with me in Thailand, I know I would have paid through the nose to get them here, and can only be happy I didn't decide to ship too much.
Maybe you could try agreeing to whatever price they say they will deliver to your house for, and then coming up with less at the moment. I only say this because we had agreed at least three times to a price, and then always got a call that said things had changed. Maybe you can change it on them, and just say, oh, sorry, I don't have that much cash now.
That is a typical experience I'm afraid.
My last box got held up for 10 days and the fees kept rising.... + 17 emails and a dozen calls! For 1 box!
I paid 20,000 tax for an item valued at 20,000.
The price went up anther 5000bt between the Customs Office and my place... while it was in the Truck.. got a call...another 5,000 under the table and we bring it now.
The gangsters at Thai Customs chase away alot of business too.
What manufactured or import/export Co. wants to deal with these people?
Every department of the govt is run like this. Steal and Cheat. Nobody will do anything.
Is it any wonder that this Countrys economy is headed for the toilet?

Privy Councilor advises nation to emulate ants
The Privy Councilor advised the nation to apply the ant's way of life in their daily lifestyle, especially the virtues of perseverance, endurance, cooperation, and self dependence.
Privy Councilor Ampol Senanarong (อำพล เสนาณรงค์ ) hosted the opneing of a museum building at Kasetsart University, which aims to function as a center of research. Mr. Ampol conducted a speech on Living like Ants under a Self Sufficient Economy. He said that despite the ant's small stature, the animal is hard-working, possesses great fortitude, cooperation, and self dependence.
The Privy Councilor said that members of society are currentl lacking in virtue, with lack of kindness, selflessness, or morality. Mr. Ampol revealed that if humans acted like ants, then the nation will develop further.

I travel on business every few weeks and I spent 15 minutes in the queue and that was when I realised the money saving option wasn't for me, after a 27 hour flight the last thing I want to do is spend time in a taxi queue, that's why I always take the Limo now.
Is that why the AOT lets their 'Limo Touts' get first crack?
See if they can mislead the weary visitor into paying triple.
Make it inconvienent to find/use the 'local priced' taxis.
Somthings wrong.
