  1. Are you talking 500k baht? Because I don't know what sort of condo you get for such a princely sum whistling.gif

38sqm room with small kitchen area.

Okay for some people. Also okay for some people keeping it as an emergency place and rent it out until then. 3000b p/m rental is about 3 times better than the 2.35% Thai banks will give.

    34sqm studio for 420k.

Nothing wrong with buying one and renting it out until a rainy day. Or if older, single and on a small pension. Or letting a university gik use it.

No need to be snarky. smile.png

Good luck with it OP. But as I said before. Have it in your name at all costs. :)

  2. What freaks me out when I go back to the West is cars stopping at zebra crossings, before the person has even stepped a foot into the road. It almost has to be seen to be believed after a few years here.

Because in the UK it's the law to stop if there is someone standing at a zebra crossing. The average Brit follows laws, the average shitkicking Thai does not

Because stopping at a pedestrian crossing is disadvantaging oneself for no gain?

  3. Was just talking to a British educated (Secondary school and tertiary level) Thai and he laughed when I brought it up.

His take was that many Thais (born and raised here) only act to advantage themselves. Which might mean financially or making a social setting easier for themselves by smiling and lying. Even giving - making merit - is to advantage themselves later on.

With many Westerners they will go out of their way to disadvantage themselves for reasons alien to many Thais. Tell the truth when it disadvantages them to do so, give things to people with out any expectations of merit further down the line, hang around the scene of an accident they were involved in, etc etc. Many Thais see this as beyond foolish and is why many consider Westerners to be stupid - They will purposefully disadvantage themselves for no good reason.

That was his take on it. smile.png

We went for lunch and I was driving him back to his house, an oncoming car wanted to turn right, across my lane, with waiting cars behind him. I slowed down for him to go, nothing, kept on slowing down obviously stopping to let him turn across my lane and free up the cars stuck behind him, nothing, stopped and had to wave for them with my hand to go.

He just laughed, with a shake of head, many Thais would never do that he said, there's no advantage in it for them. Made me laugh.

  4. It's absolutely impossible to be living on 20k a month, even if you are single, have no car or bike to pay off.

The survey is a joke. 100k does not let you live in a Palace. I spend 110k a month and do not live in luxury.

Please break down your budget. Not judging but where does it go? Expensive condo?

Sent from my GT-I9500 using Thaivisa Connect Thailand mobile app

    Previously my expenses were:

Rent: 40k baht. 75sqm 1 bedroom condo with full kitchen, all amenities such as pool, gym.

    Bills: About 5k.

Two weekend breaks per month: 20-30k.

Groceries and day to day shopping: About 10k.

    Extras: New tyres/insurance/buying something 10k.

Daily petty cash: Between 200-500b for lunch.

Weekend night could be anything from a cheap 1k to 10k.

  5. I currently live on 7,500 "all in " and I am sorry but I just cannot understand how you all spend so much money! 20,000 baht a month!? Thailand is a 3rd world country guys! I don't know anybody who spends that kind of money!! That's outrageous!

I guess you live in a 'room'.

    Eat street/market food.

Can't understand how people can happily exist like that for their life, but to each their own. Good luck if you're happy doing it and will naver want for anything more. :)

  6. I know they happen as I have posted in detail about one instance . Two wrongs don't make a right and all that kind of thing as well as a good lesson for my children as what is accepetable behaviour, one that many need, and what's not plus how to deal with an issue if necessary. We have a no hitting policy between the kids, even my 2 yr old, unless it's rough house fun and we often play really hard incl. no pad full tackle Amercian football in the yard. Believe me when I say when Thai's see us they cant believe it! The boys don't cry unless they are hurt so they are building character too. I don't buy toy guns nor donwload violent video games for them. In turn I will be calm, at least in front of them, tomorrow.

As I'm sure I'll need the teachers info to file any kind of complaint so I'll get it tomorrrow from both him and the administration with the intenention of filing a police report, if I do so or not is another matter as I feel a stern warning might be appropraite at this time (thanks AnotherOneAmerican).

Sorry if I'm going on alot about this but I'm just a concern parent and trying to be culturally sensitve while at the same time not taking any bullhsit!

Why are you afraid to go the police only that will work unless you get the teacher.

    Going to police is easier

for one, the police would not give him the time of day as he has already stated he is not the father and not married to the mother of the child. under Thai law, even a biological father not legally married to the mother of his child has no legal rights unless there is a legal document from the amphur or the court granting him those rights.

also i too would urge him to take a deep breath... making a Thai teacher lose face could backfire in many ways....

If he goes the police with boy they do something Just try it or take care of the teacher yourself

Contact Pim at Citylife first, they might be interested in an article about Child Abuse in Thai schools.

Going to the police with the child and the media is going to see some action.

  7. Nasty. Anything, absolutely anything can happen in the blink of an eye. Especially in Thailand.

    Always remember that.

3 things are vital for driving a car in Thailand:

    1st class insurance.

    Front dash cam.

    Rear dash cam.

Not expensive to set up, and at some point in your life here they will likely save you trouble and grief.

  8. You have to pity the people who cannot and did not appropriately dicipline their children through means other than violence. :(

Not physically abusing children doesn't mean that you're spoiling them, you know.
