  1. Thailand's going to hell in a basket and the nation is worried about this ...

Sometimes you really couldn't make this stuff up.

how you know it's a basket and not a plastic bucket? there have been persistent rumours that it may if fact even be a metal bucket but it this age of composites it's not a gimme

  2. dont only check one way fares also check return fares for the same leg, often depending on where you are flying, the return fare will be cheaper than the one way. so get the cheapest return ticket for the cheapest return date and just dont use it. or you could try to get a refund on it but like your chances of getting much back. sometimes you may be able to get a return package tour then just dont return.

  3.

Just as another assurance, I opened an account with Citibank IPB in January and all I had to provide was some proof of address and proof of being in thailand - I used a broadband bill and my most recent entry stamp (not the visa page) - was all pretty seamless.

Edit - thinking about it they did ask for certificates of incorporation for my companies after I sent the initial batch of docs, but I think this was only because I'd mentioned them as my source of income - seemed they wanted some backup proof of how I earn money - pretty sure they would have accepted an employment contract were I employed.

certainly, although was not asked for  proof, they did ask and noted approx. how much per month would be coming into account and where it was coming from and why..and copies of the PP

did you have to get a written note in triplicate from your wife stating that you changed your underwear that day?

  4. Now is this part of the norm?

even the street street vendors will know exactly how much cash you currently have in a thai bank. the notion of privacy doesnt exist. as far as i can see farangs business is everyones common knowledge even if you tell absolutely no one.

  5. darwin to kupang indonesia is the shortest flight but it really isnt worth the hassle of going land/ship through indonesia if you dont want to go through. yes and it IS a big hassle with spanners throw in all the way. not sure of the flight cost but if you also add in indo visa to land/ship transport i dont think you are going to come in under the cost of cheap flight from thailand or malaysia.

international to exactly where you want to be was also cheaper than closest port (perth or darwin) then domestic flights but my info is nowhere near current. may also be able to get into broome now a days. dont really know..

  6. As for 'owning land' issues, I believe the Thais have it right. Foreign ownership of land, especially in a country as small as Thailand is NOT a good thing. Perfect example would be Australia. They have allowed foreign investment to swoop in and make large land purchases and that country has significant problems with the cost of housing, locals have been well and truely priced out of the market by wealth foreign investors. I'm not complaining though as I am a land owner that made serious profit by selling land for multiple amounts of what it was really worth, so three cheers to me wink.png.

yes i agree, be careful what you wish for.

one reason you can afford to live at low cost in thailand is because the international slush money isnt allowed to invest in thai land. the international money requires an interest on its investment and it is you who would be paying that interest. its compound up the chain through higher capital cost of all production which the consumer must then pay.

  7. i think siam commercial bank is the best bet. they are who i have bought from before, the three major thai banks i asked yesterday are on the list. but it is definitely branch specific.

last i went to hsbc it was: no we only deal with corporates here. standard chartered and UOB are also difficult (i have never got what i want on approaching different of these on a few occasions in the past, just too difficult to deal with or flat refusal) to get any service from. going to try SCB today, and perhaps a different larger branch of kasikorn but not hope full there.

else its just going to be cash instead. not going to ring amex as i really dont want to go to bkk.

  8. do you know a branch of any bank that is currently selling travelers cheques? quotes from three different thai banks today: "no we dont sell travelers cheques, no we dont open foreign currency accounts, no we dont send money overseas" not the first time they have closed/stopped the foreign exchange of thai baht.

looking any bkk to east preferably not pattaya thanks.

Try to contact Amex directly. They used to sell them at their HQ in BKK. Not sue if they still do but worth a try if you need. The issue they might have is that you would like to exchange to a different currency and this is not that easy without work and work permit.

Sent from my iPad using Thaivisa Connect Thailand mobile app

yes amex hq is worth a try.

a lot of retirees are not going to be pleased that they cant get their money out according to your post.

i have bought T/C in thai before but have also experience difficulties when there are "political " issues in the past. bank i bought from before were helpful but in the south, now am in the east.

will contact amex tomorrow. thanks. elsewhere still appreciated. as i think i did ring amex once before and they said no if i recall correctly.
