  1. I need to hire a car in Pattaya for three days for a trip to Suphanburi Province. I'm hoping there will be a number of TV members that can recommend an inexpensive and reliable renter. Normally I do this trip on my motorcycle, but my wife has been unwell of late, and it would not be fair to subject her to a 400Km each way drive riding pillion. We could resort to Bus then mini van, but given the safety record of Mini vans don't think this is an option we would wish to consider.

I know that there are a myriad of adverts/web sites, but we would prefer to take advice from others who have had a good experience previously with an inexpensive renter.

    Many thanks in anticipation

  2. What an old tosser, what was he doing at a 'Battle of Britain' event? Neither him nor any other member of his family with all the medals on their chests fought in any wars.

Where do you get such nonsense from,

If you had cared to check, Prince Philip joined the Royal Navy in 1939 at the age of 18 and served in both the European and Pacific theatres of war.

A similar check on many of his children and Grand Children would reveal that many have served in front line positions in recent conflicts including the Falklands War and Afganistan.

How can such an 'advanced member', offer an opinion on something they obviously have a complete lack of knowledge.

  3. Sometimes When composing an Email, and I insert the first letter of the intended recipients name, so I can 'auto insert' from my contact list, I find that many of the 'suggested' email address's, are not in my contact list and are not known to me.

Can you be a little more specific on what your using for email?

How much more specific do you need when my OP stated that it appeared some of the contacts came from my YAHOO Email address book

  4. I first joined Facebook back in 2007 - back then it was the thing to do. However I rarely use facebook now, probably only for gleaning some information on my two children who due to my vindictive ex wife I have been estranged.

Those who use facebook know that on a regular basis names of other Facebook users are listed in ' people you may know', these are usually 'friends' of a person in your own friends list, but also names of other Facebook users generated at random, or are they?, given the millions (Billions) of Facebook users, wouldn't you consider it more than coincidental that some Facebook users suggested, appear to come straight from my Yahoo email address book or my list of Skype contacts, does Facebook have access to my Email/Skype contacts or has hacked into them and is using my contact lists without my consent.

The weirdest contact suggested was actually my estranged daughter whose Surname had been changed to my ex wifes maiden name.

Can anyone throw any light on how these occurrances are happening, and whether they should be, and if not who would one complain to as it would seem to me that an abuse of my privacy is taking place.

  5. There should be no requirements or hoops to jump through for a British subject to be able to return to his or her country of birth with their chosen wife/husband, and nothing to prevent them from living there as being unable yo do do would be a breach of their human right to a family life.

Such reasons tendered to the Courts by immigrant criminals in order to avoid justified deportation

  7. I would like to say this is one of the nicest threads I have ever read through on TV, every post was a pleasure to read with none of the snide smart arse remarks that are usually found in almost every other TV thread.

  8. I had a broken crown at the front, as a result I could not retain my partial denture. I was recomended to contact an ex Pat at Si Ratcha hospital where he was a senior administrator. He made an appointment for me within the week, and although I didn't know him he took the trouble to meet me in the Dental Suite prior to my appointment, The crown could not be saved and so was extracted at this visit. A month later I had an appointment for the impression to be taken for my denture. Seven days later my new partial denture was fitted and a perfect fit.

Three years later the crown next to the one I had extracted broke (chewing on a 'Yorkie' chocolate bar !!),

As I was in the UK at the time I emailed my contact at Si Ratcha asking him to make me an appointment for a few days after my arrival back in Thailand. When I arrived for my appointment I saw the same lady dentist who had dealt with me last time (who spoke perfect English). I went through exactly the same procedures as before with the same excellent results. In both of these cases I felt neither pain or discomfort and bleeding following the extractions was minimal.

At 70 years old I have unfortunately had considerable experience with dentists, an example of which was that my first extraction was done with Chloriform being used to knock me out !!. In my 40's I found an excellent young dentist in the UK who was a real 'artist', sadly being so good he was able to leave the NHS and be in private practice, his fees sadly beyond my means.

I can only say that from my own experience the attention I recieved at Si Ratcha hospital was without doubt the best I have ever had. And I have to say I was pleasantly pleased with the charges

  9. Just wonder how he could be located 50 metres below the surface. Couldn't be 50 metres above the surface.

Either the reporter means he was located on the surface 50m from the platform, or if he was located 50m (150 feet approx.) deep, how the heck did he get down that deep and stay down? current maybe? perhaps he got tangled in something.

Edit: Either way, to lose your life over 300 Baht, how sad, RIP

I would have expected a more sensible post from someone deemed to be a 'Senior Member' Pattaya28. The terminology used '50 Metres below the surface' was the correct terminology, and was giving a reference point. The 'surface' is not always the term used, in commercial diving if a diver was lost, the reference point might be the location where he was working. For most people they would have understood the meaning if it read he was found '50 Metres down' , but Pattaya28 no doubt you would have come up with the nonsensical response 'Well it couldn't have been up'. Its a pity you can't leave your petty comments for more frivolous postings rather than tragic ones.

A person that has drowned has ingested sufficient liquid to overcome the bodies natural bouancy, hence it will sink to the bottom, after a period of time a decomposing body produces internal gasses that will overcome the negative bouancy and the body will rise to the surface. Nothing unusual or requiring uneducated speculation

  10. Technically, a motorcycle is a motorcycle under Thai law and all motorcycles are supposed to be ridden on the far left of the roadway.

Another misconception, the Thai Highway code (based on the UK Highway Cade) calls for ALL vehicles (including motorcycles) to keep to the left except when overtaking slower moving vehicles or obstructions.

  11. Use your eyes like they are radars. Scan everything and be prepared. Always keep 100% focused. Have a rest if you find yoursef daydreaming.

Always leave yourself some wriggle room in the hills. Some of the corners here tighten up halfway around and you may have someone on your side of the road as well. Only nail it if you can see all the way through a corner. Never cross the centreline in a corner, the other side is not yours to use.

The grip varies here. Use the best tyres money can buy and always check your pressures. Learn to read the surface and what kind of road you are on.

    Excellent advice.

In town I use a Honda Click, so much easier to move about in moving and stationary traffic, for long/touring runs I use a Honda Silverwing 400, so comfortable for long distances and mirrors that are actually useable!!.

Reading the road surface as said by Bung really importent , need to focus 200 metres ahead for changes in colour of the surface, or straight white lines that suddenly begin to look like a snake. Sadly you have to treat every other driver, no matter what they drive, as a complete idiot, and always expect them to do the opposite of what they should.

I am also lucky that my Thai Wife and pillion passenger has incredible 'road sense', and acts as a second pair of eyes for me, sometimes alerting me to potential dangers before I've had chance to spot them myself. Her 'input' at busy junctions where you need eyes everywhere has been invaluable

  12. I recently returned from the UK, having renewed my passport, My old passport containing the Valid Visa and Multi Entry permit.

I was well aware of the procedure to go through at immigration and all went smoothly, however the immigration officer kindly imparted to me information I was not aware of.

The immigration officer had made a note against my entry stamp, indicating the presence of my visa/multi entry permit in my old passport.

He told me to ensure on exit I produced my old passport along with the new passport, and this even if I had had the old visa transferred to the new passport, or renewed the visa/multi entry permit prior to my next exit (as will be the case for me)

I wasn't aware of this and just pass this on in case others in the same situation didn't know this.
