  1. Having work in the transport industry in Thailand for 10 years we have found it nearly impossible to import a car if you are a farang. Tax of 200+% puts most people off immediately. Having said that, I did hear of one outfit that claimed that they have found a way around the regs but have not heard any more since.

Maybe somebody else has as I'd certainly like to know.

This would be imported by a Thai National, if that changes anything. Do you know which office we should contact???

BSJ: Post specifics of what you do know or simply don't post. The OP clearly states that we know it may be headache but regulations do change for the better sometimes hence the query.

  2. Hi!!!

Anyone have the nuts and bolts on how to ship/import a car to thailand??? There was a thread on this a few years ago, but I can't find it. Something about taking the engine out and shipping separately.*

    Thanks!!!

*yes, we know it's a headache already.

  3. You really should have complained about what happened after the tsunami with the navy working hand in hand with Christian groups to rebuild homes and hand out supplies. Those Wicked Christians, probably next year they’ll want to start an orphanage with the help of the marines. Sick I tell you. When will these evil fiends be defeated?

I did complain. US taxpayer donated supplies. US Taxpayer paid for uniforms. US taxpayer paid for logistics. The Ministries were simply opportunistic.

BTW many NGO's and Thai service(public and private) organizations handed out supplies, re-built homes and started orphanges after the tsunami.

If the "anti-christain" comment is directed at me, I dare you to find any comment by me anywhere on the internet where I denied any individual thier right to believe in the supernatural. Christian or otherwise.

  4. ...I think this is the group that the OP is referring to: http://www.ywamthai.org/bangkok/.

...there is big buisness ($$$$) in starting a mission/ministry that appeals to pity with the "claim" of saving young girls from a life of indentured servitude as sex slaves. On a side note I filed a complaint with http://militaryreligiousfreedom.org/after Uniformed US Navy personal participated in Mercy Ministries Public Events in Pattaya and Phuket two years ago.

  5. Almarg: Don't worry. You can travel pretty much anywhere on earth and find examples of xenophobic behaviour. The point of my earlier post was that if one acts like a lout then expect to be treated like one. This is the same pretty much anywhere. The anti-farang attitude alluded to in other posts is ,in many cases, simply an anti-"certain types of behaviour" attitude that some farang choose to display. This does not mean that every Thai is a good or gracious person and nor does it mean that every Thai person has an anti-farang attitude anymore than each and every farang is a lout. If you, as an individual, are polite and gracious, you can expect the same from the overwheming majority of Thais.

    Enjoy your travels!

  6. Just for the contrast I googled "killed in bar brawl" to see what would pop up:

Calangute waiter killed in brawl with tourists

    BY HERALD CORRESPONDENT

MAPUSA, MARCH 4 — A waiter of a bar and restaurant at Umtavaddo, Calangute who was brutally attacked by two young tourists succumbed to his injuries at the Goa Medical College early Sunday morning.

The deceased has been identified as Dashrath Rathore resident of Bijapur. A case under section 302 IPC (murder) has been registered against the accused Aman Singh and Jasbinder Singh both residents of Chandigarh.

Calangute police claimed that both the accused were nabbed at the Dabolim airport on Sunday evening while they were trying to flee from the State.

According to police, the accused both students studying in Australia were on a holiday trip to Goa. The duo who were putting up at Mandrem, visited Calangute beach on Saturday afternoon.

The two accused who were interrogated stated that they picked up a quarrel with a waiter.

Following some heated arguments, the duo were given a sound thrashing by the other waiters. In a fit of rage one of the accused pulled out a knife and stabbed the victim and disappeared from the scene. The victim who suffered abdominal injuries was rushed to the GMC where he succumbed to his injuries at 3 am on Sunday.

Calangute police are conducting the further investigations into the case.

...Gee whiz, it seems that bar brawls between tourist patrons and bar staff are not exclusive to Thailand...

Sadly, I wish could offer a solution or some method of resolution but I can't. It's really up to the cops to be called before the event, rather than after, but then if this happpened , every bar-stool ex-pat pundit would be screaming thier lungs out about the more visible police presence wrecking thier memories of the "real Thailand".

  7. ...we would like to get a new laptop w/ Windows Vista in Thai. Is this an extension pax that we download or do we have to purchase a Vista version localized only for the Thai market. We're in California BTW.

    Thanks in Advance, Espina

...seems that maybe someone does protest too much. I am sure the OP can use his advanced level of reasoning to understand the underlying points of my reply.

Seagull: If you genuinely suffer from Asperger's syndrome, then I'll keep that in mind and ignore your future "contributions".

  9. ...in regards to the OP. Gee, has the mal-treatment really been that bad? Yeah, dual pricing can be a pain but then I can waltz into most any building, business, or supercenter without doing the Thai National Strip Search detention...

For me, I see most Thais giving Farangs the benefit of the doubt. It's up to you to prove your farang kii nok chav cred and then come running to an expat board whining about mistreatment...
