  1. Very sad to hear about this when the country is in need of the good Thai spirit.

Good Thai spirit? You must be kidding. These people would take advantage all day long if they could. Not really any fault of their own. This country values only the baht and how much you have of it. There are no safety nets, no social programs so one must beg, borrow or steal if one wants to survive.

Or maybe even have to work.... Uhhhhh sorry.gif

Are you talking about the USA?

  2. Thanks all for your advice...My wife took it into a shop...they said they fixed it...cleaned out the dust that encased the internal organs, repaired a damaged item? and gave back to me with a bill for 800 baht. It worked that evening. The next day the same problem. My wife took it back to the shop.

Later they called and said the computer itself is fine & that I created the problem by shutting off the machine every night and not just putting it to sleep.

I am now tenderly putting it to sleep.

Some other problems persist but I can at least use it.

  3. The most dependable motorbike I ever owned or rode...took many trips from BC to New Mexico...through out the American and Canadian west.

My riding partner rode this bike...

    bmw_r75_6_1976_750_8.JPG

later I bought it and enjoyed it...still as much as I liked it the Honda was the most dependable and almost unbreakable...I slid down a levee into a river and such & it just started up and kept going.

  4. I live south of Pattaya (Huay Yai) and have TOT. I have a connection. It dropped off last night but resumed this morning. My Thai wife tried calling the hot line which was disconnected...she got through to a real person who checked the line... TOT seems to be much better than several months ago...fewer drop offs...and fast enough to watch streaming videos... I still download most and watch later.

Where are you in Pattaya? Do you still have no service?

  5. My two year old Toshiba has just developed the problem of not turning on. It is plugged in and has the battery on....When I push the start button three green lights come on but the fourth does not come on...and the screen is black. I Unplug it and take the battery out and push the button and it starts...what should I do? Any advise on this? Thanks in advance.

  6. I just tried to access the mail by the normal route & get a message

    Mail Home - Help

    Scheduled Maintenance

We are undertaking some essential, but extensive maintenance to improve Yahoo! Mail. During the maintenance period, some users may experience problems accessing Yahoo! Mail.

We sincerely apologize for this inconvenience. Your account is in great shape and we are working to have it available again as quickly as possible.

    So, I guess no problem.

  7. Yahoo mail will not open...I get a message..[connection refused] I recall that Yahoo here in Thailand had a problem like this a month or so ago. I'm south of Pattaya on TOT. Anyone else have this problem?

I can access Yahoo mail by using an alternate address http://m.yahoo.com/mail which opens up my mail but no graphics..just a very basic program but it works.

    later

  8. I've had a number of problems with TOT internet access. The other day (& again this morning) I could not get onto any website. I used Chrome, Opera & Explorer. Explorer checked out the problem & said the sites I wanted were on the internet but I was blocked by some firewall & my machine's firewall was configured properly.

Still Skype worked but not the websites. How can this be? I don't get it...just an old ignorant fart.

My wife called TOT & we went through the standard nonsense with them trying to blame my computer set up...She then checked with the Thai neighbors who said the internet wasn't working...She asked if they called TOT...they said no they never had...they just accepted no service while paying the bill.

  9. I used Firefox and the plugins and Free Download Manager and Orbit and Utube downloader and Opera torrent...etc. etc.

However, I recommend Google Chrome as the browser to use..it has a plugin to download Utube. When you go to a video on utube under the video will be a bar that says Download As. Click on the it and it will give you the choice of MP4 & FLV in several qualities (if available). Click on your choice and it all starts automatically...and it is as fast as any I've come across...

Having downloaded massive amounts of Utube videos I think this is the best I've come across.

Now that TOT has a phone line going past my semi-rural place I have a much faster connection and don't download as much as I can see them streaming....

As for torrents I use my main downloading manager which is Flashget...It easily downloads stuff from Piratebay, etc.

with a minimal amount of effort on my part...

    Lots of luck

  10. I opted out of windows explorer years ago & adopted firefox. Several years ago I moved onto Opera as it was much faster & more stable than firefox on my internet connection here. I really like some of the features on firefox. In September while visiting in Seattle the nephew of a friend (a professional computer technician) recommended Google Chrome. I'd tried Chrome when it came out but had some problems with it & was happy with Opera. In December Opera started acting up & I gave Chrome another try. Now I am very pleased with Chrome...I keep Opera for the great RSS feature, Firefox for Utube downloads & Chrome for all other purposes as it is much faster for most sites.

Do what you will but I recommend having at least three browsers ready to go. If one crashes out then you have others to go to.

  11. I moved into a rural district south of Pattaya five years ago...Same problem...loudspeakers blaring away in the am and pm..then it toned way down. I asked my wife what happened. It seems a block of homes in the other direction complained...they must have been influential Thais as it did the trick. Indeed, in a fit of pique, the local headman complained that if these folks complained he wouldn't let them hear it at all and removed the speaker facing that direction. We still get it, not every morning and much quieter..I just go inside & turn up the TV.

Now if I could only resolve the bass thumping sounds whenever someone feels the need to throw a party and make sure everyone in the hemisphere knows they have a big pair of speakers.

Nothing for it but to do as has been suggested...grin& bear it or leave.

Don't even think about cutting wires or such..if you do it in your pale skin you will be seen by someone and will take it up the ass...

  12. I've had a few messages on chat appear on my yahoo mail from folks with Thai sounding names...Also some unknown folks asking to be added as contacts on my Skype account...I typed a reply to one and found she was in Ghana...I blocked all of them.

    Who knows?

  13. I've used Avast for six years or so. I like it. It is free. It updates itself several times a day. It has caught several viruses. I am happy with it. I use Antimalwarebytes also. Same comments as to Avast, except you have to update it manually..easy to do. I also recommend Glary Utilities for lots of reasons. You are welcome. Cheers from Sattahip

  14. I live in Huay Yai, south of Pattaya. For the past two years, I've used a Solomon EDGE usb modem, DTAC, and a Toshiba laptop with Vista. The internet connection varies in speed but worked. Yesterday if just stopped. I was on the net and then nothing worked...I logged off and tried to establish a new connection. The modem recognized DTAC but not EDGE...It refuse to connect.

After six hours of trying to connect, my wife called DTAC...they said their system was working fine...We tried some tricks and no dice.

    This morning, it worked

Has anyone had such a problem?

Also, If I bought another modem that claims faster speeds such as a Novatel Merlin or a Sierra881...would my internet connections be faster and more stable.

    Anyway thanks...Craig

  15. There is a distributor in Duck Plaza near Big C in South Pattaya. I bought a case of Beer Lao and one case of Dark Beer Lao..

    address..225/ 11 M 10 South Pattaya Rd

    Nongprue, Banglamung Chonburi

  16. I read it every week. Wanda Sloan is a gem. She has helped me several times when I sent in a problem...she even emailed me. She also reviews and recommends, usually free, software...

Has it gone down hill as several posters say? I don't know...I liked the old format but not wed to it. There does seem to be a slight decrease in "quality" the last six months ofr so...maybe, it is just me.

This section is, for me, one of the best features of The Bangkok Post...Bravo, for Wanda Sloan.

  17. Growing up in a small Wahington state town in the late 50s and early 60s, the A&W drive in was the one of the two hot spots to hang out...Waitresses would come to the car to get your order and bring the stuff. I ate a lot of hamburgers there and drained kegs of root beer. Sure with diet A&W was here. I spent a lot of time in the old beach rosd site. I vote for A&W.

  18. I don't understand why when someone asks a real question looking for advise that a number of people put up nonsense. Are they bored or what. Why are we forced to have to wade through their nonsense to find real replies? Maybe there needs to be a forum for silliness...they can play there. Or are they just inconsiderate people?

I have Dtac Edge and have noticed a real decline in speed recently...using both Opera and Firefox as browsers. If it continues I may try AIS....

  19. I downloaded the new firefox...I can not right click to highlight or download anything....went to a mozilla forum to see others have this problem..most common suggested remedy was to disable the Yahoo toolbar...I did still no go. The other fixes are too techinical for me. I shitcanned the new one...put the older FF up and the right click works.

I use Opera...I started using it on my old laptop with XP because it seemed a bit faster and more stable than FF. Now with my new laptop with Vista...Firefox stalls way too often...the screen turns milky and I can't use it.

I am on Dtac on a Solomon EDGE modem...no phone lines here. I used firefox exclusively in the states and here when I lived in an apartment with a phone line.

I don't know about intuitive...I just want something that works without hassle...Opera seems to suit me the best.

  20. I use one of the fan stands that plugs into a usb port and blows air up to the laptop...I further placed the stand on top of inch high objects (erasers) to lift the fan stand and computer up and allow more air flow under the computer...there are no objects around the laptop that would restrict airflow and I have a standing fan directed at me and the laptop. This seems to work OK...
