  1. Hi Manarak,

There is an installation disk that comes with the Belkin router. The problem lies with the "sxuptp driver" (by Silex technology) that is required to make the connection with the internet via Windows 8.1. As I said, check it out on the internet - the problem itself is well documented, but the solution fix is not. Apparently there is no problem with Windows 8.0 -- just 8.1.

  2. If you are thinking about a Belkin router in combination with Windows 8.1, then you should do a search on the internet for problems of compatibility. I couldn't believe that Belkin products had a problem with Microsoft's latest product until I tried to install a Belkin router, and it would not install. I gave the router to a friend because of the incompatibility. Maybe the problem has been fixed within the past two weeks when I had the problem, but I don't think so. Check out this problem before you buy!

  3. Would it be too much to ask whether the Tuk-Tuk drivers who beat the German national almost to death were arrested, or even questioned, by the police? It isn’t like the Tuk-Tuk drivers are dogs or other such animals, that is, naturally occurring phenomena, that can’t be expected to conduct themselves in a not vicious and non-violent way, is it?

Or, … maybe it is, as far as the Phuket variety is concerned.

One thing is for sure, I will never ever travel to Phuket.

  4. Though Naam certainly does not need anyone to defend him, it looks to me like many posters here can hardly control their vitriol. Consider it - he’s not even an American! Come on, guys!

And Naam, I’ll take you up on your Iranian oriental rug challenge. I’ll bet you a large Heineken that you have had pork fried rice sometime during the past week.

  5. Does me being white also afford me some benefits? Yes. Does being white also add a really great benefit .... that I am outside of (not above and not below) the Thai social system? Yes. I can associate with everyone from Generals to Tuk-Tuk drivers on a different level than Thais themselves can, just from being outside of the social system. ... Very simply, life is too short to live somewhere where you are unhappy ...

These two points are, in my opinion, centrally important. Existing outside the local social system makes life so much more interesting than if you have been pigeon-holed into a particular slot with accompanying expected behavior within the rigid hierarchical Thai social system. You have more freedom to operate as an individual without being restrained as much as a regular Thai person is. Then, couple that with economic independence, as is the case with many foreigners in Thailand, and you have a really good situation to experience stimulating and relatively safe situations. It is not clear to me how many ex-pats recognize this feature of their Thai experience, but they should.

    Live on, jdinasia!

  6. Sounds strange to me; it will be interesting if there are other reports of a similar policy.

The Thai embassy in Washington has had a similar financial policy for several years for a tourist visa, plus further aggravation to include a requirement for a round trip ticket. And they enforce it, as witnessed by a Thai friend of ours, who was down to her US passport after letting her Thai passport lapse.

From the Thai Embassy DC website:

A copy of round-trip ticket or itinerary paid in full

    - A copy of recent bank statement or evidence of adequate finance

($500 per person and $1,000 per family)

In reference to financial requirements from consulates in the U.S., what you neglected to quote was the following:

Those with "Nation passport from Afghanistan, Algeria, Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, Cuba, Egypt, India, Iran, Iraq, North Korea, Lebanon, Libya, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Syria, Vietnam, Yemen" may be required to submit financial documentation.

U.S. citizens are not required to provided financial statements to the consulates in the U.S. for tourist visas.

  7. I will add some more pictures of fish I catch over the next few days just to show how quickly they grew.

    Hi DLock,

Thank you for your really interesting post. Congratulations on a successful project. I have to apologize for my ignorance in these matters, but how is it that all those fish, and all those different kinds of fish, got in there to begin with? Did you purchase them? From your posts it seems that some must have been naturally occurring? Is that right?

    Thanks.

  8. ... I'm a born again <deleted> ...

... People just hate me after a while, so Thai visa is the only place I can make people listen to my crap points of view that has [sic] no relevance to anything. I mean, where else can people like me go? ...

    Hi Beetlejuice,

This is just to let you know that I think your posts are entertaining. I like them. I hope that doesn't upset your self image.

    Best,

  9. Fox News is clearly the best and most balanced TV news source available, and the loony left just can’t stand it since it does not conform to their preconceived ideas of what they would like, no – demand - what other people should think.

It’s really sad to read some of the comments that come bursting out just as soon as a non far-left idea is expressed on TV news or here on Thaivisa.

  10. We thank you deeply for pointing out a possible fundamental error in our use of language !

As penance, we are going to read Chomsky again, ...

    Sawasdee Dear Esteemed Orang37,

First of all, I must thank you for not disclosing the backwardness of my trial argument with both of you – the statement regarding which comes first, phoneme or morpheme, in our consciousness. You made no error at all.

But since you mentioned Chomsky, I can’t help but add the remark that I am sure you will remember one of his first publications (before he found his true calling), that infamous blue-colored monograph of 1957 titled, “Syntactic Structures,” in which he utterly demolished the Skinnerian model, S --> R, s -> r, (you remember those days, don’t you?) of language analysis. After many pages of devastating logic that had one absolutely convinced that he was speaking from “On High,” he said something like, “But in case you don’t believe me, that’s OK, because the real reason Skinner had it all wrong is the following. … And then he did it again!

Ever since then, I keep getting things mixed up, like which comes first, phoneme or morpheme, since it might not make any difference anyway.

Again, thank you for your thoughts and much appreciated discretion.

    Best to you,

    Walt

  11. Sawasdee Dear Esteemed Orang37,

I couldn’t help but notice that you guys have apparently confused phonemes with morphemes since morphemes are composed of phonemes rather than morphemes to phonemes, and then to glyphs to relay inner thoughts. I know it must be difficult for you, having internalized two beings – it’s probably the orang part that prompted that small glitch since he might have a conceptual problem distinguishing between the two.

In any case, keep up the good work, and best to all of you.

  12. We provide a New Year 200 baht per person gratuity for the set of guards at the gate of our condo located in the CBD. I think we may be in the minority in doing this, but I noticed that I am always greeted with a friendly smile and a seeming eagerness to provide assistance in carrying things in and out.
