This of course is not the case - there are a lot of history books and papers both in Thai and English that lay out some very interesting interpretations of Thai history. Whilst it is true that these books often fall from favour or even get banned from time to time, the research and resulting information is there to be read. There are in fact some very good Thai history books that can be bought "off the self". as well as Universities that continue to teach history as it should be taught. Just as in other countries they are often criticised rather clumsily by the local media or the authorities.

Those books are illegal here and I cannot even say why. Even semi fictional films concerning historical Thai figures are still banned here.

The trick to avoid a nasty immigration offier is to buy thai snacks for them a simple 40-50 baht snack will be like day and night in terms of treatment.

I have never met anything else other than helpful friendly people trying to do their job in a professional manner.

They have to sit there all day dealing with total idiots (not saying that includes you).

Many a time I have been sat there doing my extension while witnessing the officer on the next counter trying to explain to some abusive farang why he does not qualify for something and how to go about it.

They show more patience than I would in the same situation.

Well that's a bit like you being skeptical at others having a health problem just cos you never had it. Just because you never had a problem at immigration does not mean others have not met with obstructive, unfriendly officers, and corrupt ones of course.

My first extension experience 10 years ago was appalling but no point complaining about it. The woman officer was obviously looking for a bribe and even though everything was in order eventually out of frustration just refused to process it and then told me to go to another office as they did not really do them there. I was not abusive and calm and collected throughout.This was all untrue they did of course do extensions and it was the correct office for my area. The woman either retired shortly after or was moved and I found out from here she was a falang hater, not really in the right job! She even told my mrs she did not understand how she could live with somebody too stupid to understand the immigration rules. It was obvious from what she said earlier and the way she behaved that she was fishing for a bribe then threw the shutters down when one was not offered.

I believe that is "Ultracet". It is low dose tramadol mixed with paracetamol. A very good example of a pharma company scamming the consumer. They take two very old, generic drugs.... Combine them in 1 pill and charge tons of money for it under brand name status.

Sounds bizzare but nothing here surprises me any more. Long time Chinese national here resident in Thailand said she went to the Thai passport office at Srinakrin for her one year visa! She was adamant it was there and not Samut Prakan immigration where she 'should' have gone. Said they wanted 10k this year but she knocked them down to 6k. I certainly would not mind paying that without the 800k in the bank. Actually there are a few Chinese nationals where we live, all are house owners and none appear to have any problems about visas!
