With rubber being so popular here one would think you could get supplies locally.

thanks farmer jo for ref site ,,all the best ,, chris

  3. Snowandpigs useing gas or hormones on the trees is like this. Liquid latex is like the life blood of rubber trees. The trees use the liquid to make the tree strong, make the wood strong. Forcing more out of the tree than it can give naturally will destroy the tree. Its the same as if you donate blood and they suck more from you than your body can produce. You will die if done regularly.

I have seen some farms, gass or use hormones on trees when the tree is 25 or 27 years old. They will get a lot more rubber from the tree. They accept the trees will be probably worth nothing as the timber wont be strong . Also they accept they will have to clear the land when the trees are dead and pay for it themselves. This is the tradeoff for getting more rubber .

I dont know if you can understand the wood buyer telling you gassing is ok,or somebody else pass the message to you and got lost in translation. Or maybe somebody told you this because they want more money today and never mind the future.

Im not trying to insult you, just give advice.

    Cheers Cobbler

hi ,, i don't know the firm science of gas or not to gas ,,havn't read any creditable papers on long term tests done,,all i reason with i didn't go into rubber growing with the end game selling the trees as a factor ,, my outlook is to gain a return from farming them now not 20 or so years in future when i'll propably be dead anyway ,,doing gas latex has all the advantages i'm looking for ,, it suits me down to the ground to do all the work myself ,tried cutting but eyesight at night no good , no more paying for unrelieable workers a fair percentage of harvest every month ,, we gain far more latex for our efforts be it a poor price per kg at this time ,, cutters have been a big problem most seasons ,, even had one lot of cutters, the father in law who was doing chemical drink the stuff and kill himself ,,stories plenty have put up with ,, other thing i like about gas is very little harm done to trees bark ,,trees look a sorry sight after a few years getting hacked at ,esp by some cutters who don't give a butchers ,, back to selling trees, i hit sister in law up again about use of gas ,, she buys for plywood ,, says has had no props with wood from long time gased trees, thats her take on it for what its worth ,,, me i'll keep gasing ,,whatever method we each prefer to use i just wish us all the best with price climbing not to long away and markets settle upwards ,, but thats farming ,, regards

  5. looking good, I see that you have the pigs out with the rubber trees, that was always our plan but it did not happen that way in the end. would have loved to pump all that waste water

    onto the trees........

chers ,, yes great to have all the shade ,,leaves bit of a problem at the moment but small price to pay ,,, our waste goes down to nong ,, the gets pumped down rows every now and again ,, system works well ,, regards chris
  6. snow and pig:

    Where is this Bandung.?

Can i ask you why you have the Durocsow? Only to get a Boar, or what is the reason?

I would like to keep 2 female LR + Duroc to be a sow. . But everybody say it's bad to have the Duroc inside the Motherline. The Duroc is short. This i can see.

Or there is again i miss a part.

hi allgeier,,bandung is 70ks east of udon thani, takes about a hour from there ,all on good roads ,,, yes we mainly have the duroc sow so can do all breeding infarm ,, any line need to bring in we get sperm from ponchantor(ponchai) farm south of bkk ,keeps risk down but are not fool proof, sow in pic(DeeDee} this is her second litter ,i have young boar from her first, same father as litter ,,found through experience always have backup for your boars ,,esp since we supply a fair amount of sperm for A.I to the local region plus our own needs,,the duroc sows next litter will be duroc /L.R for finisher piglets, then will see what we need next after that,,found you have to think at least 18 months aheadfor breeding in this business ,,,i liked your pics of your due sow ,, be keen to see how get on ,, all the best, chris

  13. Hi All, thought is was about time I introduced myself. I have been following this thread for the last few months and took the time to read all 1600 posts. I have just completed the build of my first shed (actually a big extension on my better half's small existing operation) and ready to start buying some Gilts and or Parity 1 or 2 Sows. We are running a farrow to finish operation. This forum has been invaluable to my education and I want to start by thanking IA for starting it and all the regular contributors to this. I am a farming newbie so am hungry for knowledge and learning from the experience of others is critical to my success in this venture.

We now have 11 rooms and four completed farrowing crates with room and plans to build another four crates when needed. Ended up designing and building my own galv crates which saved a lot of money. I did not build in the suspended floor as that was going to add considerably to the cost. We have the original 3 sows that Neuy already owned and all 3 are in gestation at the moment. Also 10 x 30+kg growers and 10 x 85-90kg finishers. (Actually we only have 7 now as we sold 3 yesterday for 80baht per kg... two for a local funeral and one for a wedding. Nuey is a wonderful negotiator. clap2.gif ) I know they would have got me down to 77 and I would have been very happy with that.

Finding it a bit of a challenge to find quality sows and gilts at a good price at the moment but I am not in a rush.

I am up in the Udon Thani district so if there are any members up here then I would love to catch up for a beverage and chat. I also visit Bangkok on a regular basis so can meet there as well.

Anyway, thanks again to all the help you have unknowingly given me in planning and completing this project. It is very exciting seeing all the research and plans on paper come to fulfilment. Supervising my first construction project in Thailand was very educational to say the least. Learnt a lot (from many mistakes) that I can use if I decide to build again.

Now on to stage two and building up a strong herd.

    Cheers

    Peter
