  1. The title of this story implies that there has been political stability recently. I must have missed when that happened.

To allow foreigner to own land in poor countries is extreme dangerous. As the foreigner can buy half the country or at least the best places, keeping the oringal people without any land. There must be restrictions.

This is nonsense. Land can only be purchased if it is for sale. Why are restrictions needed? Are Thai's so irresponsible and only out to make a grab for quick cash?

Wait, don't bother answering that last question.

  2. mmmm , you must be a newbie in mac :D

Newbie??? It's about more than 20 years that I follow Apple (MacIntosh) computers.... and never liked :D Sorry, it happens. I've also made my studies on MacOS 7 (I will always remember the bomb :) ), the same nightmare as Windows 98. I've really enjoyed windows since Windows 2000.

Perhaps it's a language barrier, but I have to agree that it sure does sound like you don't know what you're talking about.

  3. Boy -- here we go again. There is no direct upgrade path for users of Windows XP, which is the Microsoft operating system of choice of most corporations and computer-savvy home users. That means that most end-users will need to understand how to completely rebuild their own computer from scratch -- and for the average user -- that's gonna be a major challenge. Then you have to relearn the new Windows 7 user interfaces. I'm sure that, as usual, Microsoft will either move, hide, or obfuscate the legacy interfaces that can be used to control, monitor, and tweak the new operating system. So now you again have weeks of relearning as you attempt to figure out how to control the new OS. Well, I sure that Microsoft's "Authorized" Training Partners will be more that happy to teach you the new Window 7 operating system at $2500 a pop for a 5 day course. Microsoft has always been totally out of touch with their existing user base. Nobody I know likes relearning the new user interfaces that MS rolls out with each new version of their OS. But here we go again. Well -- not me!

My suggestion for the average user – buy an Apple. As for me, once Microsoft discontinues support for XP I'm switching to Linux and open source programs. I just don't see any value in the "new and improved" Windows 7. :)

Everything you said is true until the last paragraph. By your logic it isn't worth changing your OS because it's a hassle (and expensive) to learn a new one, so your solution is to buy an Apple and go through an even worse learning curve?? OSX is next to nothing like Windows whereas Windows 7 is at least similar.

If you want to preach the word of Steve Jobs go right ahead, just stop trying to disguise it as something it's not.

  4. I'll wait until all the bugs have been ironed out and the final verdict comes in.

They're still ironing out the bugs in XP!!

I can see no point in not only paying out money for an OS that does nothing more than XP, but I will also have to upgrade many applications. plus the time and hassle of reformatting the drive and instaliing all the new programs.

I am taking this time to become very familiar with Linux so when the time comes that I have to change I have an OS that I am familiar with to change to.

By your own logic you should still be using DOS 1.0, that worked. If you have to upgrade to an OS that does nothing more than XP, need to upgrade many applications, and spend the time and hassle to reformat and install programs again (I thought you already did that) - how is the process any different for Linux, your apparently preferred OS that you're not even using. Oh that's right, you're running Windows.

Do you sleep with your tin-foil hat on?

  5. I've been going to Jedi for years for both personal and business equipment and while there've been a couple of problems Jedi staff have always done their best to overcome them. I've never felt that any problem was caused by Jedi anyway.

Re: Tax invoice, if you ask for a Tax Invoice (in a business name) why would they not ask for 7% additional VAT? Producing a Tax Invoice means they must submit it to the revenue department/pay the sales VAT, so by insisting on not paying 7% additional you are effectively asking for a ~7% discount. Anyway, if you are really purchasing for your business why would you not want the purchase VAT to balance against your sales VAT?

  6. The fact that lower fares are announced, but no details are provided is very telling. I refuse to fly Thai because you never know if you'll get a plane from the 70's or a modern one. Also the service is quite random. In fact, everything about the comany is so random it just isn't worth the hassle when you can fly Singapore Air and know what to expect every time.

  7. We're just renewing a visa for the managing director at the company I work for and the immigration department are suddenly saying that we don't have enough Thai staff, despite the fact that the number hasn't changed and they approved it last year. This has led me to wonder just how many staff are required per farang?

Does anyone know? Does the number change dependant upon the visa? We have one farang on a non-o and another on non-b visa.

  8. Hi

So, last week I did a post about how True adsl dropped to a quarter of it's normal rate between the hours of 10am and 5pm, last tues and weds. After those days, it was fine.

    http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/index.php?act=ST&f=17&t=68725

    Until yesterday.

Yep, 10am sharp, bandwidth takes a steady downward route, and between 5 and 6 starts to rise again.

    Today, same thing.

I called true, they denied everything, of course, but the facts show this is deliberate, not a "technical problem".

I know I'm not the only one this happens to, as friends on true are also finding it.

But I just don't know what to do, other than dump True and find better - so can anyone recommend a non-capped, good service with similar pricing?

    thanks

    Neph.

Pehaps CS Loxinfo provide better service, but the problem remains that ISP's are cagey about letting on how much bandwith is available for consumer use and how over-subscribed it is.

  9. Well, I'm both glad and sorry it's not just me :o

Logic? Since when has logic had anything to do with anything in Thailand?

Anyway, I sure hope this is fixed soon, because it's a ###### pain!

    neph.

I really hope this isn't happening. True's international connections are pathetic as it is, what we really don't need is for them to be doing bandwith shaping and having it allocated to the business accounts during the day.
